Vienne (département)

Redirected from Vienne Vienne is a département of France, number 86, located in the centre of the country, named after the Vienne River.

The département of Vienne was formed in 1790 from parts of the provinces of Poitou, Touraine, and Berry. It is bounded by the départements of Indre-et-Loire on the north and northeast, Indre on the east, Haute-Vienne on the southeast, Charente on the south, Deux-Sèvres on the west, and Maine-et-Loire on the northwest.

Poitiers is the préfecture (capital) of Vienne.

Sous-préfectures: Châtellerault[?] and Montmorillon[?].

The principal rivers are the Vienne and the Charente[?].

Cheese making is an important industry.

The Church of Saint-Savin sur Gartempe[?], a UNESCO world heritage site, is located in the Vienne.
