Vernation

Vernation (related to vernal, since that is when leaves spring) is the formation of new leaves.

In the pine tree, new leaves are short and encased in sheaths. Each leaf consists of 2 or 3 needles. All the leaves on one section of branch grow long together.

In the cabbage, new leaves are folded over, each covered by the previous leaf.

Ferns generally have circinate vernation.
