Six United States Navy ships have borne the name Saratoga, after the important Battle of Saratoga in the American Revolutionary War. The first Saratoga[?] was a 16-gun sloop launched in 1780 and lost at sea the following year. The second Saratoga[?] was a corvette built on Lake Champlain for service in the War of 1812. The third Saratoga[?] was a sloop-of-war[?] commissioned 1843. The fourth Saratoga was the cruiser New York renamed. The fifth Saratoga (CV-3) was the third aircraft carrier of the Navy, commissioned in 1927 and active in World War II. The sixth Saratoga (CV-60) was also an aircraft carrier, commissioned 1952, decommissioned 1994 and proposed to become a museum ship (see www.saratogamuseum.org (http://www.saratogamuseum.org)).
