Building of a Montana-class battleship to
be named USS Maine (BB-69)
in honor of the 23rd state
was authorized July 19, 1940, and assigned to the
New York Navy Yard; but, before her keel was
laid, construction was canceled July 21, 1943. Maine
would have been the third ship to bear that name had she been
commissioned.
Other ships of the United States Navy have borne the name
Maine; see that index page.
