USMC War Memorial

The USMC War Memorial depicting the raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi[?] during the Battle of Iwo Jima is on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. It is dedicated to the lives of United States Marines given in service to their country since 1775. Nearby is the Netherlands Carillon.

The statue, sculpted by Felix deWeldon[?], is about 6x life scale, was cast in Brooklyn, New York, and shipped to its present site. A flag flies on the USMC War Memorial 24 hours a day -- one of the few sites where this is permitted. The memorial was formally dedicated on November 10, 1954 on the 179th anniversary of the Marine Corps.
