The Age is a broadsheet daily newspaper in Melbourne, Australia that was founded on October 17, 1854 and is published by The Age Company Ltd[?], a subsidiary[?] of John Fairfax Holdings Limited[?], the group also responsible for the Sydney Morning Herald[?], The Canberra Times[?] and the Australian Financial Review[?].
Its only local rival is the Murdoch tabloid Herald-Sun.
The Age's editorial position is reasonably consistent with the modern social-democratic position - mostly pro free-trade and moderately liberal on social issues. For example, The Age regularly prints featured opinion pieces from The Guardian, a left-leaning British broadsheet.
The Age features the cartoons of Michael Leunig and Ron Tandberg[?].
The current editor is Michael Gawenda[?], with Malcolm Schmidtke[?] editing The Sunday Age.
