Palyessye
Palyessye in Belarusian, Polissya Ukrainian, Polesie in Polish means (“Woodlands”). That is a vast, once waterlogged region in the thickly forested basin of the Pripet River, a major tributary of the Dnieper[?] river, occupying southern Belarus and northern Ukraine. The middle of the river once was marked by the soggy expanses of the Pinsk Marshes.
Among the numerous tributaries of the Pripet are worthwhile mentioning the Horyn [Goryn], Stokhid, Styr, Ptich, Yaselda rivers. Villages and towns appeared on the river banks. The lagest towns here are Pinsk, Stolin, Davyd-Gorodok.
Huge marshes have been considerably reclaimed in the 60s - 80s of the last century to increase the area of farming land.
As a matter of fact, the reclamation is believed to have badly affected the biosphere and the climate along the course of the Pripet river.
