Nieuwe Waterweg

The Nieuwe Waterweg (or "New Waterway") is a stretch of river in the Netherlands. It begins where the Nieuwe Maas meets the Oude Maas near the city of Vlaardingen and flows west to the North Sea at Hoek van Holland, a distance of approximately 20km.

The waterway is a busy shipping route for the harbours around Rotterdam. At the entrance to the sea a flood protection system, the Maeslantkering, is installed (completed in 1997).

The section just past Vlaardingen is sometimes labelled "Het Scheur". The New Waterway forms the artificial mouth of the Rhine river.

There are no bridges or tunnels crossing the Nieuwe Waterweg.
