Makati is located within the quadrangle of 12° 011 latitude north and 14° 331 longitude. It is bounded on the north by the Pasig River facing the City of Mandaluyong, on the east by the Municipality of Pateros, on the northwest by the City of Manila, and on the south and southwest by the City of Pasay. It is one of the twelve (12) cities of the National Capital Region which also includes five (5) municipalities.

Land Area

Makati has a total land area of 27.36 square kilometers or 2,736 hectares, it constitutes 4.3 percent of NCR's total land area, and is bigger than neighboring cities of Pasay and Mandaluyong. The city is composed of two (2) districts further subdivided into 33 barangays, the biggest of which is Forbes Park with 2.5266 square kilometers while the smallest is Kasilawan with only 0.0922 square kilometers.

GETTING THERE

Makati is a short 15 minute-drive from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and the Manila Domestic Airport. Air-conditioned buses plying the Epifanio De los Santos Avenue (EDSA) route from Baclaran in Paranaque to Quezon City and Kalookan City pass through the Central Business District (CBD) daily. Jeepneys ply Makati's inner roads, and connect the city to its surrounding towns and cities. The Manila Rail Transit (MRT) on EDSA has three stations located in Makati: Guadalupe, Buendia and Ayala Avenue.

Population

The City of Makati has a population of 524,000, according to the 2000 Census of Population conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO). This figure represents an increase of 39,824 or 8 per cent over the 1995 figure. Among cities and municipalities in Metro Manila, Makati ranks fifth in population, with a 5 percent share. In a span of 97 years, Makati's population grew 193 times. The 1903 Census placed the population at 2,700.

Based on the 1995 Census of Population, the 20 barangays comprising Makati's First District have a combined population of 230,726, while the 13 barangays of the Second District have a combined population of 253,450. Barangay Pembo has the largest population, with 62,097 while the least populated barangay is Urdaneta with 3,575.

Households and Household Size

Makati has a total of 117,000 households with an average household size of 4.49. The number of households in the city increased by 16,078 or 16 per cent over the 1995 figure of 100,922 households. Barangay Pembo has the largest number of households with 12,396 followed by Bangkal with 6,367 and West Rembo with 6,113 households. On the other hand, barangays with least number of households are Forbes Park (558), Urdaneta (787) and Carmona (929).

Daytime Population

Although its population is listed at 484,176 in the 1995 Census, the daytime population of Makati is estimated at 950,000 during the weekdays, or an increase of almost 100 per cent, because of the large number of people who work, shop, or do business in the Central Business District (CBD).

Districts and Barangays

Muntinlupa City is composed of a lone congressional district, and two legislative districts which are further subdivided into nine Barangays. Legislative District One contains four barangays in the southern half of the city, while legislative District Two occupies the five barangays in the northern portion of the city.

While barangays are the admnistrative divisions of the city, and are legally part of the addresses of establishments and homes, many residents indicate their subdivision (village) instead of their barangay.
