Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent
Prince Edward Augustus of the House of Hanover (November 2, 1767 - January 23, 1820) was the fourth son of King George III of the United Kingdom and the father of Queen Victoria. He was created the Duke of Kent in 1799.
Edward was born in Buckingham Palace and entered the army, being stationed in Gibraltar for some years. He remained single until 1818 when, following the death of the heir to the throne, Princess Charlotte Augusta, the succession began to look shaky. King George IV had no surviving legitimate children, nor did the next in line for the throne, his brother William IV. Edward now married the widowed Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfield[?], and their only child, Victoria, was born the following year. Edward predeceased his three elder brothers, but, since none of them had any surviving legitimate issue, his daughter was next in line for the throne on the death of William IV in 1837.
