Dieppe

Dieppe is a town in the Seine-Maritime département of Normandy, France, on the English Channel.

The city has a population of 35,694 people (Dieppois) (2000).

A port city, Dieppe also has a popular beach, and an ancient castle and churches.

On August 19, 1942, during the Second World War, it was the sight of a bloody landing by Canadian troops, two years before the invasion of Normandy. The raid lasted only nine hours but claimed 907 Canadian lives. The United Kingdom lost 106 RAF aircraft in the air battle above Dieppe.
