Crypto-Judaism

The alleged or actual preservation of Jewish rites[?] by converted Jews or their descendants, crypto-Judaism was a particular target of the Inquisition. Crypto-Jews were sometimes called Marranos as a derogatory term.

Small communities of descendants of crypto-Jews can still be found in Spain, Portugal, the Caribbean, Iran, and the American Midwest[?].
