Blaue Reiter

The Blaue Reiter (Blue Riders) group of artists was established in Munich in 1911. Wassily Kandinsky was one of the founders. Other well-known artists that were part of it were Franz Marc, August Macke[?], Gabriele Münter[?] and Paul Klee. The members were interested in European medieval art[?] and primitivism as well as the contemporary, non-figurative[?] art scene in France.

The name of the movement comes from a painting of a blue knight that was used on the front of an almanac edited by its members.

An extensive collection of paintings by the Blaue Reiter group is exhibited in the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus[?] in Munich.
