Baseball statistics

A seemingly intrinsic part of the game of baseball is the keeping of statistics on the achievements of the players. Started by Henry Chadwick in the 19th century who devised the concept of batting average based on his experience of cricket. Commonly used statistics are explained here:

Hitting Statistics

• 1B - Singles[?]
• 2B - Doubles[?]
• 3B - Triples[?]
• AB - At bats
• BA - Batting average
• BB - Base on balls (also Walk)
• CS - Caught stealing[?]
• G - Games played
• H - Hits (baseball statistics)
• HBP - Hit by pitch
• HR - Home runs
• OBP - On base percentage
• OPS - On-base plus slugging
• PA - Plate appearances[?]
• R - Runs
• RBI - Runs batted in
• SB - Stolen bases
• SF - Sacrifice flies
• SH - Sacrifice hits[?]
• SLG - Slugging percentage
• SO - Strikeouts
• TB - Total bases

Pitching Statistics

• CG - Complete games[?]
• ER - Earned runs
• ERA - Earned run average
• GF - Games finished[?]
• GS - Games started
• IP - Innings pitched[?]
• L - Losses[?]
• SHO - Shutouts[?]
• SV - Saves[?]
• W - Wins[?]

Fielding Statistics

• A - Assists[?]
• DP - Double plays[?]
• E - Errors[?]
• PB - Passed ball
• PO - Put-outs[?]
• TC - Total chances[?]
• TP - Triple plays[?]
• WP - Wild pitch
