Barrie (2001 population 103,710, metropolitan population 148,480) is located on Lake Simcoe[?] in south-central Ontario, Canada.
The city was named in 1832 after Sir Robert Barrie[?], who was in charge of the naval forces in Canada and frequently had to portage from Lake Simcoe to the Georgian Bay[?] through the city.
Several manufacturers are currently located in Barrie, and CFB Borden, a military base, is nearby.
