On June 1, 2002, Agere Systems was spun-off from Lucent Technologies.

The company currently develops, integrates and sells optoelectronic and integrated circuit components used in high speed communications networks.

Update: On August 14, 2002, the company announced plans to exit the optoelectronics market by June 2003.
