New Star Wars: Have fans guessed the Episode III title?

George Lucas has dropped a possible bombshell about the title of Star Wars: Episode III, the forthcoming final installment in his prequel trilogy.

Fan rumors about the title have been running rampant for months with kicked-around monikers including "Birth of an Empire," "The Creeping Fear," "Rise of the Empire," and "Revenge of the Sith."

Now Lucas tells USA Today that fans may have already guessed the title. When asked directly if Rise of the Empire was the title, Lucas flatly stated, "No, that's not it." But when the paper asked about Revenge of the Sith, he said, "That's a possibility. Lots of titles out there..."

The title isn't expected to be officially announced until November, when the teaser trailer arrives in theaters.

The official Star Wars site's newsletter recently revealed details about the film's opening sequence. The film begins as the starfleets of the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems are battling it out high above Coruscant, trading fire amidst massive capital ships and sleek starfighters.

To quote: "Hundreds upon hundreds of ships are engaged in this high-stakes battle of the Clone Wars, but the audience will only really follow two small snubfighters into the thick of battle. As Obi-Wan and Anakin dive into the heart of the conflict to carry out a most important mission, they'll be the camera's guide through the chaos."

Star Wars: Episode III hits theaters in May 2005.
