Star Trek producer Rick Berman has been told to stay away from unresolved story arcs and cliffhangers for the fourth season of Enterprise, according to the SyFy Portal. Berman's production team should also be prepared to make the final episode of season four a series finale, in case there is no fifth season.

"There simply is not a lot of confidence that the show will carry over longterm," says an alleged source at Paramount. "While they are hoping the publicity surrounding a new night of programming for (America's) UPN will help it as an anchor show, there is not a lot of promise."

Berman may have already seen this coming, as he's told fans to expect numerous short story-arcs next season instead of a season-long odyssey like the Xindi plot that dominated this year's Enterprise.

The same Paramount source also said that UPN would consider cutting off the show mid-season if ratings aren't good enough, saving any remaining, un-aired episodes for summertime.

Contingency plans may also have been in place this year, in case a fourth season didn't pan out. Scott Bakula (Captain Archer) recently stated on The Wayne Brady Show that three different endings were filmed for this spring's Enterprise finale. One potential ending would have left Captain Archer dead – a plausible development had the show ended this year.
