Movie Extra supports aspiring actors with new series
  Author: Movie Network | Jan 23, 2007, 09:59

Known for its support of aspiring Australian filmmakers, MOVIE EXTRA is now supporting aspiring actors in a new five-part series to be screened in March.

Hosted by actor/comedian Josh Lawson (Thank God You’re Here), the unique new series will follow an acting competition involving both recognised and emerging Australian talent from the Melbourne finals of Short & Sweet. Short & Sweet is Australia’s - and the world’s - largest short play festival, showcasing the work of writers and actors within plays less than ten minutes long.

The reality series will treat viewers to a unique and exclusive look behind the theatre curtains, sharing in the real-life drama of the writers and actors involved in the competition. From their mental preparations to their breathing exercises, the audience will gain insight into the dreams and determination of the competitors, and share their emotional journey as they compete for recognition of their craft. Notable Australian actors Alex Dimitriades, Susie Porter and Pia Miranda are on hand to give their expert opinion on the performances.

Commenting on the new partnership with Short & Sweet which sees MOVIE EXTRA as Principal Sponsor and the facilitator of bringing stage to screen, MOVIE NETWORK CHANNELS General Manager Peter Jenetsky said, ”MOVIE EXTRA recognises the integral role theatre plays in the development of our writing and acting talent. Film actors around the world, including Australia’s finest, have spent some of their formative years in the theatre. To some it’s considered a right of passage.

“We are delighted to continue our support of Australia's emerging creative talent through this association with Short & Sweet, and to present to our television audience the excitement and challenge faced in performing live on stage. The series will be a unique program that will give viewers a never-before-seen look backstage and on-stage at a live theatre event,” he said.

Short & Sweet premieres on MOVIE EXTRA on Thursday March 1 at 10.15pm.

The half-hour episodes will be shown each Thursday night and then encored on Fridays at 12.00pm.
