Historic Racing Cars, Winton

Winton is about 2.5 hours north of Melbourne on the Hume freeway. Highlights of the day of historic racing cars (7-8/11/1998) included Sir Jack Brabham in the Repco-Brabham Formula One (F1) car, Peter Brock really trying in a Holden Torana, two rare Porsches out of the Porsche museum and here for the company's 50th anniversary celebrations, and many classic cars such as a lovely 1969 Renault Alpine.

Sir Jack Brabham prepares to take the Repco-Brabham that won him a Formula One world championship for a run at Winton's day of historic racing cars.

While not quite as ear-shattering as the F5000 cars, the 3-litre V8 makes plenty of noise. The engine is a single overhead cam-shaft (per bank) V8 design and shares a common ancestry with the (push-rod) Rover V8. A DOHC version was raced in F1 in 1968, and a 4.2L version at Indianapolis that year - 4wd.sofcom.com/4WD.html

Right: 1988 Mitsubishi GTO 4x4 was driven with some verve.

Left: 1989 Nissan Skyline 4WD is a road-going relative of `Godzilla' the Bathurst winner.

Right: Subaru Impreza isn't particularly historic, but it's nice anyway.
