You surely will be interested in a brand-new 4x4
Van, which is probably not listed in the Australian MB brochures. You may have
seen pictures of it, from the IOR Off-Road show in Munich, that took place
last week-end [4/'1997].
It is a little bigger than the syncro and offered with 2800 or
3500kg (total weight). The 4x4 conversion is done by IGLHAUT GmbH, a
certified Mercedes shop at Marktbreit near Würzburg, with a very good
reputation for their 4x4 vehicles, in Europe.
The ancestors of the current
Iglhaut Sprinter-Allrad were based on the Mercedes Benz 210D (left).
Most of the parts used for the conversion are original
Mercedes Benz (light-truck and
G-series),
some are self designed and
manufactured, few originate from external suppliers - like the central-diff /
reduction gear, which is of Japanese production and used in several other
well-known, superior 4x4 vehicles.
Factory engine is a 5-cyl. 2,9L TDI from the Mercedes E 290 TD with 122HP at
3800rpm and 290Nm at 2000rpm. A 2,3 gasoline with 143hp 240Nm is also
available. A version based on the similar Volkswagen LT is being prepared.
4WD is offered in three versions: selectable, permanent,
permanent + visco-drive. Front suspension is independent to raise comfort, the
rear one is a standard MB Transporter axle. Ground clearance is >26cm
(depending on the tires of course), wading possible up to ca. 70cm.
You can choose
between all sorts of tires & rim combinations from 225/75 R 15
(factory) up to 285/75 R 16 Mud Terrain.
