Anthony Maeder's 1960 Firefly fire engine was used on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.

The Firefly is based on the series two (SII) 109" wheel-base Land-Rover. It has a 100 gallon water tank, which may not sound a great deal until you realise that 100 gallons of water weighs half a ton. Add the pump, special bodywork and rescue equipment and the total is getting close to the vehicle's maximum payload.

The internal tankage is only intended for dealing with spot-fires, damping down, or containing a fire until a larger fire tender can be called up. The water pump is driven from the gearbox power take off (PTO) unit and can empty the internal tank in a couple of minutes.

An electrically operated bell is fitted to the front bumper bar and a siren is mounted on the front wing. A light hose is carried on a rear-mounted reel. A ladder and larger diameter canvas hoses for drawing water from a dam or from a hydrant are mounted on an overhead rack.
