The Jeep story starts with the
Bantam
car company which built
a couple of thousand light four wheel drives for the US army
before world war two. Ford and Willys-Overland made the big numbers
of Jeeps (700,000), and money, during the war.
They were called "General Purpose" or GP which soon became Jeep.
One of the rarer and more unusual 4x4 variants was the amphibious Jeep -
a miniature DUKW, a Jeep with a hull built around it
(see the Military vehicles page).
It is reported that they tended to be more submersible
than amphibious in anything but the calmest water.
Nevertheless, an Australian and his American wife
"drove" one called "Half Safe"
across the Atlantic in 1950.
Now after various owners, Jeep is part of Chrysler,
which in turn became part of Daimler Chrysler.
Holden Astra Convertible Turbo(Highly recommended sports car), from $49,990
This European convertible is a stunning car in so many ways. It's a great drive (with high performance 147kw Turbo). It's practical and apart from a small boot has abundant room for 4 or 5 at a pinch. It's loaded with standard features: air, power windows / steer, cruise, 6 speaker CD, ABS, traction control, airbags & more. It also looks great! My Managing Director's lovely wife owns one of these & I have no hesitation in recommending this car to you. A true bargain for a high performance Euro Convertible.
