2004: Limted Edition Jeep Cherokee 4WD is a sporty variation - a manual only 16-Valve 2.4L Power Tech 4-cyl engine. Putting out 108 kW of power and 215 nM of torque it will perform like a true Jeep on road and off!
Also selling in 2004 is an automatic transmission/diesel engine combination. This new engine is an intercooled, turbo-charged 2.8L 4 cylinder powerplant, featuring common-rail direct (CRD) injection and full electronic control.
If you're looking for even more grunt, the existing Power Tech 3.7L V6 delivers a mighty 155 kW of power and 312 nM of torque.
2000 December:
Jeep will stop making the Jeep Cherokee in 2001;
it will be replaced by the new Jeep
Liberty
to be unveiled at the
Detroit
Auto Show and to go on sale in early 2001.
New shape, what new shape?
The Jeep Cherokee 1997 / 1998 model is in fact subtly updated
with a slightly more rounded exterior and an improved interior.
Mechanically more significant is the option of a
85 2.5L turbo charged diesel by VM,
as an alternative to the long-serving 4.0L 6-cylinder petrol motor
which is standard on the "sport".
5-speed manual transmission and
command-trac part-time 4WD are standard with the diesel,
4-speed automatic and selec-trac full-time 4WD with the petrol engine.
The suspension system remains the same -
live axle with coil springs at the front,
live axle and leaf springs at the rear.
The list of standard features on both models includes:
air-conditioning, dual air-bags, power windows, locks and mirrors,
limited-slip rear differential,
4-speaker stereo system.
The Cherokee comes with a 2-year or 50,000km warranty
and Jeep 24 hour road-side assistance.
Jeep have held the Cherokee's starting prices down to
diesel: 39,990+orc (Aus),
petrol: 41,990.
The competition:
Land Rover Discovery.
6 June 2000, Statement in Response to Jeep Cherokee Recall
DaimlerChrysler has announced a recall of 474,000 Jeep(r) Cherokees built
between 1997 and 1999. The recall is to replace and relocate the air bag
control module.
In five cases in the U.S., salt used to de-ice roads has caused the control
module to corrode and, as a result, the air bag inadvertently deployed. None
of these incidents resulted in collisions or injuries. No instances of this
have occurred outside the U.S.
As a precautionary measure, Chrysler Jeep Australia is recalling all
identified Jeep Cherokees manufactured in the 1997-1999 model years to
replace and relocate the module.
Chrysler Jeep Australia is currently compiling a list of the affected
vehicles and will contact owners by mail. Parts for the recall have been
shipped from the U.S. and will arrive in Australia in two to three weeks.
Owners will be notified that their vehicle should be presented to their
Chrysler Jeep Dealer for the free rectification which should take around one
hour.
Owners with questions regarding this recall can phone Chrysler Jeep
Australia's toll-free hotline on 1-800-680-077.
