The 1998 Holden Jackaroo 4WD
features a larger 3.5L V6 petrol engine or
a high-tech 3.0L diesel engine with 4-valves per cylinder,
double overhead camshafts, turbo-charger, intercooler and
drive-by-wire throttle!
It remains true to the ladder chassis,
double wishbone and torsion-bar front suspension, and live rear axle.
Styling is little changed, i.e. the Jackaroo remains rather dull and
conservative in appearnace.
There was good news for diesel fans in 1999
with the new option of the 4-speed automatic
gearbox on the 3 litre diesel models.
The top of the range Monterey
has a torque on demand (TOD) four wheel drive system.
This allows the driver to select between 2WD mode and TOD mode
in which sensors may automatically engage a multi-plate clutch to limit
front or rear wheel slip.
Price is crucial with these family four wheel drives
and the base model just scraped in beneath the magic $40,000 ('98)
but crept up by about $3K in 1999.
The Holden
Rodeo
was also updated in 1998.
