Four Wheel Drive
Four wheel drive conversion: for the owner who cannot admit that he or she bought the wrong 4WD vehicle in the first place - anon. Can't find your dream four wheel drive? Never mind, make it! Meccano-kit 4x4's are just waiting for car-improvement. Buggies.Various firms such as Dakar make "buggy" style bodies for four wheel drives, particularly for those whose bodywork has been written off or is beyond repair. This one is a `Bush Ranger' for a Range Rover donor vehicle. (I wonder if the name gets around Land-Rover / BMW's new concern over its trade-marks.) Roofectomy. The typical four wheel drive has a substantial chassis and is a good candidate for being turned into a soft-top even if the manufacturer never sold it that way. Monocoque construction requires a lot more stiffening if the roof is removed. ![]() Jon Francis' Soft-Top Range Rover. The Stretch.
![]() Sheer Rover by Wood and Pickett Long before Rover came out with a four door Range Rover and the LWB model, specialist firms such as Wood and Picket were adding doors, stretching the chassis and even raising the roof (above). A third axle (below) can double a 4WD's load-space and its carrying capacity. To power the third axle is seriously expensive but a lazy-axle is more economical. Just think of it as a very close-coupled trailer. URL: /4WD.html Further Reading:
