2001 September: Audi will increase the power of Audi S3s sold in Germany by 11 to 165 at 5900 (280 torque at 2200) from mid September. 2000 December: Revised Audi A3 on sale in Australia. Visual changes include clear glass (cheaper) headlights, a new grille, mirrors and rear lights, and 7 spoke 15" alloy wheels in the 1.6 and 1.8 and 6 spoke 16" wheels on the 1.8 Turbo. Interior trim has also been changed. Under the skin, Audi has modified the suspension settings on the Audi A3 1.8 Turbo and Audi S3, fitted an improved engine immobiliser, and added "a charcoal filter [to] the existing dust and pollen filter." The 1.6 litre engine option now produces 75 at 5,600 and 148 at 3,800. Prices:

The engine delivers 154 at 5400, 270 from 2100-5000,
and drives a Quattro (4x4) transmission.

Audi Australia launched the five-door version of
the compact A3;
Overall dimensions are the same as those of the A3 3-door.
Standard items include
electric (front and) rear windows,
a height adjustable front passenger seat,
twin front airbags,
twin side airbags,
pretensioners on all (5?) lap-diagonal seat-belts,
five head restraints and
a 6-stack CD changer.
The 1.6L and 1.8L cars have 15" wheels,
the 1.8 turbo has 16" wheels.
1999, January, Audi announced that the (hot) S3 model based on the Audi A3 will go into production. The Audi S3 is powered by a 1.8 litre turbocharged engine giving 154 at 5800 and 270 of torque from 2100 to 5000. It drives through a 6-speed manual gearbox to the front wheels. The front axle contains an electronic diff'-lock. Audi's quattro system, using a hydraulic multi-plate clutch, can also transmit power to the rear wheels. Standard equipment includes Recaro seats, DIS information system, and remote central locking. 17" aluminium wheels are fitted with 225/45R17W tyres. The list of safety features contains ABS brakes, driver and front-passenger airbags, front side-airbags, and seat-belt pre-tensioners on all four lap-sash seat belts.
