Tour de France 2010

The Tour heads into the Alps
10 July 2010 | 00:00

Cadel Evans and Andy Schleck will be among the Tour de France contenders keeping their eyes glued to their rivals as the seventh stage takes the race into the Alps.

Behind them there are a group of riders just a single minute back who may be looking to make up any time on the two best positioned general classification chances.

Alberto Contador (Astana), Bradley Wiggins (Sky) and Denis Menchov (Rabibank) are three sitting behind Schleck and Evans on that mark, with others like Lance Armstrong (RadioShack) and Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne) approximately a further minute back on the duo.

The first of three days in the Alps begin with a 165.5km ride from Tournus in southern Burgundy to the Alpine ski station of Les Rousses.

Despite the fact an already beat-up peloton will tackle five medium-sized climbs before the 14km ascent to Rousses, there have been hints the race's big guns will keep their powder dry for Sunday's more difficult stage to Morzine-Avoriaz.

In comparison, stage seven is more of an appetiser -- the final climb's average gradient is just five percent and it has been suggested that Swiss race leader Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank), who is not a climbing specialist, will emerge with the yellow jersey still on his back.

Yet both Geraint Thomas, Team Sky's Welsh debutant, and Evans (BMC), a former two-time runner-up, have a great chance of taking the race lead as both are only 23 and 39sec behind Cancellara respectively.

Nevertheless, Evans and Schleck will be keeping a close eye on attacks from riders like Armstrong and Sanchez, who have time to make up after losing time on the tough stage three over the cobbles.

"Even in these early days people will be looking for opportunities, and there's a couple of guys on the back foot," said Evans.

"I know how it is in that position, you've got to look for opportunities everywhere."

Evans, Schleck and Contador were all big winners on stage three's ride over the cobbles.

Luxemburger Schleck is now sixth overall 30sec behind Evans but 1:11 ahead of Armstrong while Contador is ninth at 1:01 behind Evans and 50sec ahead of Armstrong.

Schleck has come into the Tour as the main challenger to two-time winner Contador after he finished runner-up to the Spanish all-rounder in 2009, albeit over four minutes adrift.

And the Saxo Bank climbing specialist seemed to suggest he will be paying special attention to Armstrong.

"There's two riders I need to pay close attention to, and that's Armstrong and Contador. They are the strongest. Armstrong's in good form, better than people might think," he said.

Thomas, the Welsh former track cyclist, has brought an air of excitement to the Tour after a superb first week of racing.

In doing so he has upstaged team leader Bradley Wiggins, although in reality the situation suits the Londoner who is fully focused on staking his own yellow jersey claim after a fourth place finish in 2009.

Thomas therefore has a great chance of pulling on the yellow jersey himself. That would be considered a huge achievement for his team on their debut, and is a prospect he had never dreamed of.

"It's quite strange to be in this position, but it's been a nice first week. It's not bad really, is it?" he said Friday.

"Obviously if the opportunity arose then I'd definitely try and grab it."
http://tdf.sbs.com.au/tdf2010/news/article/24552/The-Tour-heads-into-the-Alps

Sporting Groupies

What do you think of the culture of sporting groupies. Normally women who hang around bars and clubs presenting themselves as willing and able to the men they revere and pursue.

The woman in the following story makes me physically ill. To me she is everything that is wrong and bad about females who do this kind of thing.

Confessions of football groupie Charmyne Palavi
By Charmyne Palavi The Daily Telegraph May 19, 2009 12:01am

Cougar prey ... Charmyne Palavi claims she is like a drug to footballers, they "just can't keep away" from her.

I don't deny I've had liaisons with many, many footballers, but what annoys me about these tags and the way I was portrayed on that show is the idea I prey on them like some of the starstruck women I've seen out there.

I'm no angel, but I've seen this game play out from both sides: First as the partner of a pro footballer for nine years, then as a single woman who can have sex whenever, with whomever, I choose.

I am old enough and wise enough to know these encounters are nothing more than what they were at the time - mostly consensual, one-on-one sex, on my terms.

People might not like it, but (since Four Corners) I've had heaps of people, women especially, say 'good on you, Charmyne, you said it how it is'.

I did feel sorry for "Clare" when she started crying, but the stories that have come out since have been confusing.

As a woman, I think it's disgusting the way Matthew Johns has been put through the wringer in all this but her name has been kept out of it.

The whole scandal has made an example of Matthew, but I don't think less of him because of it.

Group sex happens. Now the other players involved should speak up too. To say what really happened in that hotel.

The reality is there are women out there who do hunt footballers down, are prepared to have sex with them in nightclub toilets.

Just as there are players who trawl Facebook and MySpace, who are more than willing to have sex with them.

Anyone who thinks the culture is going to change just because the story's out there however are kidding themselves.

I was messaging a young player, a Facebook friend, last week and asked what he was doing.

He replied: "Learning how to respect women. (laugh out loud)."

I wrote back: "Yeah, and I'm still a virgin."

In a way, I feel sorry for the guys in this situation, but they should also be strong enough to say no.

But even after the whole story came out about me getting together with (Cowboys player) Johnathan Thurston, I would have understood if they had kept away from me.

I would if I was them (players). But they kept contacting me. It's like a drug to them. They want to go where their teammates have been before them.

No normal person would think they're going to end up with a normal relationship with any player they meet on Facebook or in a club.

Most of the NRL boys get online during breaks in their training, chatting up girls to meet up with after they've finished.

But just as the boys like being contacted by girls through Facebook, the girls use the information the players put on their pages to track them down.

They know where they go out after games, where they stay, when they are in town, with many booking themselves into the same hotels as the teams.

I've got one girlfriend in Brisbane who sits down at the beginning of the year with the NRL draw and works out where she's going to follow them (North Queensland Cowboys) for the year.

I can see how it would be tempting and flattering to the players, especially the young players, because they aren't used to that type of female adoration.

But when it comes to sexual assault all men know what's right and what's wrong and if a girl is obviously drunk and trying to push them off, then it's assault.

I myself have been in this very same situation with a current NRL player and I can see how you get yourself into a situation that spirals out of control.

In my instance I was passing in and out of consciousness and didn't have the strength to push him off me. I told only my closest friends at the time as I knew how it would look.

Now, after the last year and the things I have been through, I am strong enough to speak about it.

Unfortunately, we live in a society where women will always be shut down for the very characteristics men are revered for - being strong, opinionated, fearless and open about their sexuality.

People seem to be ignoring the bigger issue here while they look for someone to blame. That is - the disrespect for women inherent in the clubs.

The key to fixing that problem is education. I thought my contribution was a valuable insight into a world so few know exist. Regardless of the poor lifestyle choices I have made in the past I hope to continue speaking up, so those women too afraid to speak out gain some self respect and learn they deserve better.

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25502809-421,00.html

OMG there will always be women who 'make themselves available' and therefore there will always be men who go along for the ride, excuse the pun. There will always be men who wants some sex on the side and they will therefore seek out females to do it with.
A good beginning would be to Ban all alcohol for the players. Zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs. It is a major contributing factor. Footy players egos are too gigantic to put into good use what they learn about respecting women whilst sober, especially when fueled up by alcohol.

Brett Stewart DNA tests underway, teen girl's family living in hell
By Dean Ritchie and Lauren Williams

March 09, 2009 10:48am

DNA swabs taken from NRL star Brett Stewart are being tested by police as investigations into the alleged sexual assault continue.

Yesterday, the family of the 17-year-old who says she was attacked by Stewart said the alleged assault had turned their life into a ``living nightmare''.

The teenager was assessed by a nurse at her home in Manly yesterday, as the NRL scrambled to deal with the latest fallout surrounding claims of alleged inappropriate behaviour by one of its players.

But Manly are tomorrow expected to defy the NRL by naming Stewart at fullback for the club's opening round game with the Bulldogs on Saturday.

It is understood saliva swabs from the 17-year-old and scrapings from Stewart's fingernails are currently being tested.

No charges, if any, will be laid until the tests are completed and more witnesses interviewed, including the alleged victim's mother and sisters who allegedly witnessed the assault.

Clearly distressed, the father said the alleged attack following Manly's season launch last Friday has left his family traumatised.

"They're terrified, this is a nightmare for our family," he told The Daily Telegraph yesterday.

Countering a police statement issued on Friday, the teenager's father stressed the attack had not occurred in a stairwell but at the gated entrance to a neighbouring townhouse apartment shortly after Stewart arrived home in a taxi.

The father also wanted to end speculation the pair knew each other before the incident.

"We didn't even know he lived there until now," he said. "She didn't know him from a bar of soap.

"I want to make sure my daughter gets a fair hearing - I don't care if he's a footballer, a star, or what. She did nothing wrong."

After hearing his daughter screaming, he says he confronted Stewart, whom he alleges was aggressive.

"He arrived in a taxi, he was drunk," the man said. "I'm disgusted by the whole thing, as any father would be."

The father, who fears a backlash from Manly supporters, is today expected to provide police with a statement.

He also said his family would leave the complex, after moving in just three weeks ago.

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,25157170-5001021,00.html

Some sports people think they are a law unto themselves and the majority of those sports people (99% men) belong to one football code or another, predominately AFL or NRL. Union and Soccer players, by and large are well behaved, so it would seem from the lack of bad press. During the off season in particular these young men who are treated like gods and revered by adoring fans, are in the news almost daily with an over indulgence of substance abuse. Be it alcohol, legal or illegal drugs or abuse against another human being... usually a female. During the Season they are kept in check a little better than at other times. I hate the fact that Australia holds so much store in their Sports Heroes especially the one's who behave worse than others. Footy players, by and large, are denser than a 3 foot cement wall. Punish those found at fault and who bring any sports into disrepute.
