Cloverfield-Warning Spoilers included

Someone I know very well has seen the movie 'Cloverfield' which is touted as Action/Adventure/SciFi/Fantasy/Suspense/Thriller.

It is filmed as a home movie, with a hand held video camera. Much like the 'Blair Witch Project' you get motion sick and never really get to see the 'monster'. You see tiny pieces of the monster but never the entire monster at one time! People have been leaving cinemas in the US in droves because of the motion sickness.

The Blurb from
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809873032/info says

Quoted Text

Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

There is blood and guts but that's from those the monster attacks. If it really is as big as a 'skyscraper' you would not be able to see injuries like scratches and claw marks on victims because it would squish the victims into oblivion. I had such high hopes for this movie.

If you are wondering what the spoiler alert was for, it was for the fact you don't get to see the monster! One reason why a lot of people wanted to see it in the first place

Went and saw this movie today, lets just say I thought it was a little ho hum in my book. I really enjoyed the first one, the second one not so much but number three (what were they thinking?.

The story line was a bit complicated to follow and you didn't seem to get what was going on half the time. From the end of the movie you can tell there is going to be another one and I am happy to wait until DVD for that one.

The movie went for almost three hours and it had a few laughs but mainly it had lots of fighting scenes. One character "Calypso" was hard to understand in the first place (heavy Jamaican accent) and then to make matter worse near the end her character disappears and it was very ???.

Also the relationship between Elizabeth and Wil was a bit of an anticlimax.
Go see the movie if you are an avid fan, but I was disappointed. I recently saw Spiderman 3 now Pirates 3, I am hoping, hoping that Shrek 3 won't be a disappointment also!!

Kimmy247 signing off!!

I don't know what I was expecting but I was a little disappointed - But still a good film.

Forest Whitaker was always going to do justice to the character of Idi as Forest himself is a strong imposing figure and can look very menacing without much effort. Gillian Anderson looking a bit like an older Kate Winslet does a good support role.

There appeared to be a thread of empathy for Idi by the director which I found disturbing.

Hi everyone...

Im not sure about everyone elses opinion, but Im getting pretty fed up with being told what to like and enjoy in a movie or other media.. someone tell me how Paris "I was hungry officer" Hilton gets an okay review for her CD, but Clerks 2 - the funniest movie for a very freakin' long time gets panned?

I wonder if all movie critics are given cranky juice to start their day. I mean, do they log on to Internet banking and see that the latest cheque from Paramount bounced, so they're gonna flame them in the media?

Damn, reporting these days is all press release journalism anyway... the story comes in practically pre-written. I guess if I wasnt sent the article I'd be pretty miffed about actually having to do my job... so yeah... whoever was the target of my fustrations would cop it.

Im a huge fan of Margaret and David. I really do like them. I mean Margaret took on the censors and got arrested over Ken Park. I salute her for that... but then I watch the Movie Show (or At the Movies)... and they'd be comparing some new director to some obscure Norwegian Performance artist circa 1930's.. Im waiting for the day David turns around and goes "They have talkies at the cinema now".

I love a good pisstake on a movie, in fact its my favourite part of going to the movies... the post movie dissection and pisstake. If a movie is crap, by all means... say its crap. But dont say its crap because you dont understand it... go find a 13 year old kid, smuggle them in and make them explain it to you.

It amazes me, when having conversations with my mother about movies, she'll go by what the critic said... in that "Oh it got bad reviews, I'll give that a miss".

Whereas I'd actually seen the movie (cant remember which one) and said "That guy is a freakin' loser. He must have gone to the wrong cinema because how anyone could think thats a bad movie, was obviously still sore about not having the review written for them".

I love how the reviews try to take on an air of superiority, which I guess is necessary because they are given a "supposed" expert and learned opinion. But realistically... I reckon its time for a changing of the guard.

I'll throw my hat into the ring. I'll review movies. Pick me. Give you old timers a rest. Will I be fair and unbiased? hell no. If the movies crap, I'll say its crap. If the movie is good... then I'll say so. I wont be guided by the fact that "Oh, the parent company helped finance this, so say its good"..

"This movie is really good... if you have problems sleeping or you need some alone time with the missus. IN fact its a damn shame I was the only person in the cinema to watch it because I figure if Im gonna have to endure two hours of torture, then I'd at least want my captors beside me so they can enjoy the pained look on my face as I sat through this, well I wont call it a movie, because they're fun and enjoyable, this... excuse for a movie."

Fearless AKA Huo Yuan Jia with Jet Li

Jet Li, Mmmmmmm!
Tagline: 'Fate Made Him A Warrior, Courage Made Him A Hero'
Plot Outline: This film tells the story of Chinese Martial Arts Master Huo Yuanjia (1869-1910). Huo Yuanjia was the founder and spiritual guru of the Jin Wu Sports Federation.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446059/

Jet Li throws his last punch
Tim Colman
August 25, 2006
If you're facing Chinese martial-arts actor Jet Li in a fight sequence, chances are you're going to get hurt. Ronny Yu, who directed Li in his latest martial-arts or "wushu" film, Fearless, says the actor doesn't go easy on his screen opponents.

"No stunt man wants to fight against him because once the camera is rolling he doesn't hold back," Yu says. "Sometimes he goes for real so there's a lot of bruises and injuries. Jet is also on the receiving end because the more powerful action you give, the more powerful the return. He also got some bruises and injured ribs."

Luckily for budding martial-arts actors, on-set injuries at the hands of Li will be a thing of the past. The actor has announced that Fearless will be his last wushu film.

"Wushu means the actor himself has to perform the martial arts and there has to be a strong theme regarding the wushu," Yu says. "In Fearless, he's brought everything he's learnt from years practising wushu. He's also 43 and there's only so many years he can perform every move himself. He can pick up a gun, though, for a cops and robbers film. [That] doesn't require so much real stuff - you can use doubles, wire, whatever."

For Fearless, Li and director Yu were looking for something more than a series of over-the-top fight scenes. The film tells the story of Huo Yuanjia, a revered Chinese martial arts master who founded Jing Wu Athletic Association and brought together the many styles of wushu. Essentially, they were trying to make an epic martial-arts film about non-violence.

"For the last couple of years the Chinese martial-arts movie hasn't really touched on the real meaning or spirit of martial arts," Yu says. "If you look at all these chop-socky kung fu movies it's all about revenge and killing. The better martial artist you are, the better killer you are. He's been making all these movies for so many years he thought it was time to show an alternative angle."

http://www.smh.com.au/news/film/jet-li-throws-his-last-punch/2006/08/23/1156012613127.html

This is reported to be the last time we will see Jet Li in front of the camera. He is now 43 years old and wants to be behind the camera, producing and directing. He has 4 children. Two from his first marriage and two from his second and current marriage. He has been married to fellow Chinese actor Nina Li Chi since 1999.

It will be sad to watch Jet on film in what is meant to be his final appearance but this movie should be fantastic. One for the Cinema for me.

Over the Hedge

Over the Hedge

When con-artist raccoon RJ, sensitive turtle Verne and their woodland friends find a suburban housing development encroaching on their forest home, Verne's first instinct is to retreat into his shell and leave, but the ever-opportunistic RJ sees a treasure trove to be had from his unsuspecting new neighbours. Together, Verne and RJ form an unlikely friendship as they learn to co-exist with, and even exploit, this strange new world called suburbia.

Rated: [ G ] SOME SCENES MAY FRIGHTEN YOUNG CHILDREN
Cinema release: 22 Jun 2006
Director: Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick
Running time: 84 mins
Stars: Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Avril Lavigne, Steve Carell, William Shatner, Wanda Sykes, Nick Nolte

Rated: 4 out of 5
By Vicky Roach

THERE'S a world of difference between a cynical rehash and a fresh spin on a timeless yarn. For an example of the former, one needs to go no further than the box office - where X-Men 3 and The Fast And The Furious are trying to outgun remakes of The Poseidon Adventure and The Omen.

But if the special effects blockbuster is giving every sign of being creatively spent, animated adventures appear to be emerging as mainstream cinema's equivalent to a tonic.

Hot on the heels of Pixar's Cars comes Over The Hedge, a winter heart-starter from DreamWorks, the rival studio that brought us Shrek and Madagascar.

Directed by Tim Johnson (Antz) and Chicken Run screenwriter Karey Kirkpatrick, it tells the story of a bunch of woodland animals who come out of hibernation to discover that their pristine native habitat has become a victim of suburban sprawl.

There are fewer references to pop culture and less jokes aimed directly at adult chaperones than Shrek, but there's a naive, fable-like quality to Over The Hedge that should ensure its universal appeal.

The underlying environmental message won't damage its parental suitability credentials any either.

The "prequel" to the comic strip by Michael Fry and T. Lewis begins by introducing us to R. J. (Bruce Willis), a streetsmart raccoon who scavenges a comfortable living on the edge of a tourist car park. After a botched attempt to steal the winter stash belonging to Vincent (Nick Nolte), a large bear with a similar appetite for convenience food, R. J. is forced to venture further afield.

This is how the sweet-talking con artist winds up in the same neighbourhood as Verne (Garry Shandling), a warm and welcoming worrywart, Hammy (Steve Carell) the hyperactive squirrel and Stella (Wanda Sykes), the sassy skunk.

This tight-knit bunch of friends turn to the master manipulator for advice when they emerge from their annual winter slumber to find a giant hedge has grown between them and their traditional food supply. Under his self-interested guidance, they venture across to the other side - a strange and foreign world of manicured lawns, garden gnomes, fast cars and sociopathic pest exterminators.

By the time Verne and Co have discovered here's no such thing as a free lunch, R. J. has also managed to learn a life lesson or two.

Willis and Shandling are well cast as the animal kingdom's version of the odd couple, but it's Carell's Ritalin-deprived squirrel who steals this particular show. Cute and contemporary.

http://movieguide.news.com.au/movies/?title_id=19919
