Pedophile-charge priest cleared by church inquiry Jonathan Dart September 8, 2008
TWO years ago the Catholic Church dismissed sexual harassment complaints against a priest, one of several men facing child-sex charges over alleged events at a Bathurst school in the 1970s.
Father Peter Dwyer, 65, was arrested last Wednesday in Armidale and charged with four child sex assaults dating back to his tenure at St Stanislaus' College.
Dwyer taught music at the school from 1972 and became school president in 1980. Later he served as chief carer for first-year students at the Good Shepherd Seminary, the Sydney Archdiocese's campus for future priests.
A seminarian formerly under Dwyer's care - who asked to be known as "Peter" - said there were a string of complaints lodged against Dwyer for alleged impropriety.
Peter said he decided to raise the issue following recent public debate on the issue because it was indicative of the Catholic Church's inability to handle matters of sexual assault and a culture of harassment.
He said Dwyer's transfer to Armidale coincided with the complaints and there was a belief that it was timed to minimise embarrassment for the church.
"His conduct was under some cloud but he was able to stay there," he said. "What annoys me is that he wasn't a good person, he was completely incompetent, a bully, but his conduct was tolerated by the staff there."
Peter said Dwyer had focused his attention on vulnerable seminarians from Asian backgrounds, who spoke little English.
In one instance, a complaint was lodged after he asked one seminarian for a body massage.
"It was inappropriate," he said. "He would ask one seminarian to give him body massages, which was well known and led to one of the complaints."
A spokeswoman for the Sydney Archdiocese confirmed the issue had been investigated.
"Claims that Father Dwyer had asked adult seminarians to massage his back to relieve pain were fully investigated once they were drawn to the attention of the seminary's authorities," she said.
"There was found to be no improper conduct nor were specific seminarians targeted. Father Dwyer was directed to cease this practice and he complied fully with this direction."
Dwyer has been granted bail and is due to appear in Bathurst Local Court on September 15.

Yeah that sounds pretty average, Labor there sounds as bad as The Liberals here.
The Libs former leader sniffs womens chairs (yes thats right) and snaps their bra straps, and is still a minister in Colin Barnetts portfolio. The current leader, Barnett, took the Libs to the last election, before losing, then setting himself up for retirement before being recycled as party leader merely weeks before we go to polls because no one else could do it. He lacks any vision what so ever, is anti extended trading hours, anti development and infrastructure, apart from building a few car parks.
I swear if WA are so f###ing dumb to vote in a party in such a shambles I will seriously consider whether I want to continue living here.
I agree with you Lowie. What a rabble the Liberals are yet after yesterdays election could well be government if the final seats fall their way and the Nationals join them. Currently its a hung parliament with no side having the winning edge.
I am hoping and praying the Nats and Labour can sort something out, but whatever happens we could find ourselves off to the polls much sooner than 4 years time. |

Thanks all. God, I am so relieved. I am so happy. I am back to feeling myself again. Just spent from ten a.m until 3pm with my new housemate. Met the male HM also. Helen and I get along really well. He is nice but very subdued. The ‘granny flat’ stands alone and is like a motel room. Everything is looking great. I can start taking small stuff around there from tomorrow. I have paid 2 weeks rent up to 27th sept. and have a receipt for that rent. There is a beautiful outdoor area where a lovely setting is and a fabulous BBQ and spa. It is a big house, well spacious enough for 3 adults to be around without bumping into each other. Bubba is gunna love it (the granny flat). Net connection could be a problem. I may have to join with theirs and pay more since I run a TV station, like Sillygostly said. They have wireless. My mind is going a bzillion miles an hour. Suzi needs a nap! |

Things are looking up! I have found a place to live in the form of sharing with two older established housemates. In desperation I rang an emergency housing place yesterday and ended up chatting with a lovely lady named Helen. Helen it so happens… needs someone to share with her and her housemate. It is apparently a lovely big one level home with a spa. My bedroom and ensuite are separate from the main house. Loungeroom and kitchen are my domain as well to share with the others. My birds are welcome. Through the back gate is the shops (doctor, chemist, Woolworths) and the bus. It will cost me $150. per week with electricity included. I am pretty damned happy, over the moon in fact. Not sure about phone line hence not sure about my internet. The BIG surprise is their birthdays are on the same day, he will be 53 she will be 54 on the 15th October and I…… will be 53 on the 16th October. Libran’s absolutely get along famously with other Libran’s. |
