Hi "anyone" out there incyber space
I have a seperate back up drive (USB Plugin) and would like to know how to backup my emails in MS outlook to that drive so I can
1. Have readable copy on the backup drive and
2. safely delete emails from my 'C' drive
can anyone help here :'(

You need the software guru here :D
The program you need is called inachis
http://www.inachis.com/index.htm yup its free too you dont have to reg it either :D it can save all documents not just emails too!
It zips them all for you but you can only unzip the file with the program so back it up too !

He needs to know also how to point the mail client at the USB drive if someone knows where to find that in the mail client's menu.
Also perhaps to understand the differance between compressing his email to it and copying them for reading.

well then thats easy -
download the program
install
set configs for program
Save what you want to a temp folder
click OK
then open up the USB
drag the temp folder to the drive
burn
windows should all ready recognise the USB drive
if not look in my comp - for what the USB assigned drive is maybe g:\ depends if you had partitions on c:\

No. lol, to use the USB drive as the place the mail client stores things instead of the C drive from what I got out of it. In addition to backing other things up (I think). Like where in outlook do you set the location of stored files. I thinking making sure addresses as well as emails got copied over would be a good measure too.
I don't have a Windows without the hassle of booting up my wife's laptop and then I'de have to play around with the settings and I never used outlook when I was using windows.
They have'nt posted again though so maybe they've figured it out.

it stands to reason that if you what a program on a slave drive you have to have that program on that said drive :
since outlook is a windows program and most programs require .dlls and .ocx files to communicate ( internal server such as outlook has) then it stands to reason that in order for Outlook to work on the slave drive as a stand alone email client then you need to have a basic OS to make the connection to winsock.

The program itself can stay where it is installed.
They just want the functionality of the program that saves data to point to a location that is not the default location. This is often acheivable within the GUI.

:P bah humbug - the registry is really easy to navigate and to set flags into the GUI is no benefit unless its written as such
Hex edit the GUI of any mail client you will see that.

Ok, looking at your request it seems that you are after the ability to
backup your emails
You will still use the 'C' drive as your default Inbox, but simply want to have an alternate area (your USB device) to use for
archive purposes
This is quite easy.
First select the Archive option from Outlook

Then select your USB drive as the place for the Archive folder

You can also select other options here, such as which folders to archive and when to archive from.
Note that some folders have the "Dont archive" option set, but this can be overriden by selecting the "Include items..." checkbox
Just make sure you dont
delete the archive file on your USB device!
The file will also have to be writeable...if its read-only you won't be able to access it.
