Kate our Idol...Are you happy? - Print Topic

Clearly Kate has the better dress AND makeup, but that doesn't mean much.. or does it? I think the real question in answering "Am I happy?" is in satisfying my notion that the winner would be whoever can sell more records and help make a name for Australia in the global music market and I feel this sorry commercial way now that the competition is over and realise that at the end of the day it's all about money anyway.. Of course really good singing and really good music helps, but assuming that it's young folks that would buy the music, to answer my question it's necisarry for me to go back in time and think like I once did. So it seems that in answering "Who would I rather listen to?" (just as relevant as asking who would sell more) I must ask myself, "If I was 18 years old, which one of them would I rather have sex with?"

Emily is much more mobile on stage and also seems much more likely to sing from the heart. This leads me to beleive that in bed she would be genuine and I wouldn't have many experiences where I really wondered to hard if she was faking it or not. I think that since she is the more mobile and multitasking of the two (singing AND moving) that she would be a more diverse lover and that not only would she be attentive to me as a partner, and I think Kate would be attentive too, she would be able (multitasking) to do that extra this and that as a part of her attentiveness. I may be using stereotypical here, but I think the tatoos indicate that she is open as a partner and would not face an encounter with fear. I'm not sure if she's married but I know she has a kid. If she's married then it would of course be a turn off. The fact that she has a kid indicates some sexual experience so I think she would know her way around the bedroom.

Kate does not multitask, she can sing but she can not move to what she sings. She also does not seem to get lost in the moment and make a good song brilliant the way Emily does. She has no tatoos. She has no kids that we know of. It would not be shocking to learn that Kate is a virgin. So with her, I feel very unsure of anything except that her intentions would be good. Good intentions have never really turned me on that much.

Okay all that was a load of crap although it is kind of fun to reminise about what went through my head about female artists when I was 17 and seriously now and to the end that sex does sell and that sex does sell music, in fact it was a complaint that Kate heard from the judges, "not finding the sex of the song" or words to that effect. So it wasn't really a load of crap in all respects. The truth is that success will partially depend upon the market in the respect of what age group buys albums. If it's older people then the sex of the matter goes to Emily but if it younger people, Kate would be the fantasy woman of choice as the fear for potential to not rock one's world (like Emily might) wouldn't be realised by a lot of young people. It seems now that my summaries are becoming a little relevant and not a load of crap afterall and in all honesty I think it comes down to image because the name of the game is money and there are plenty of great song writers out there. It is doubtfull that our Idol will have to worry about writing good music or finding a band they can work with.

I wonder what happens to record sales after a person is knocked off of that sexaul pedestal? For example, I wonder how well Britney Spears is selling these days. Probably not very.

I wanted Emily to win. I'm happy with Kate. I don't want to have sex with either of them.
I liked Dan better than Kate actually but I'm still happy with her. I don't want to have sex with Dan either.

A 26 yr old girlfriend of mine is hooked on this show and was very put out when Emily didn't 'win' but isn't it the runner up who gets all the deals and good exposure. Your comment about Emily, Simpson, was a bit out of line.

I think that Emily should have won. Throughout the entire competition Kate did not have one song where you could say wow that was fantastic, no touchdowns at all. She was consistently good but never brilliant where as Emily had flashes of brilliance & should have won. Worst of all is that somebody has actually signed Lee Harding.

Yeah, I agree with SuziH - Simpson, you're abit harsh. I think both girls are lovely looking women with very bright futures.

Kate didn't get a touchdown, true, but I loved her renditions of both Ironic and Heaven.

How come I get away with writing a really long post about who would be better in bed and get away with it but Simpson gets challenged? I myself was just re-examining the picture after re-reading the thread and also thinking it was harsh... but only because of who wrote it since Simpson isn't known for it. If it was someone else, that I can't think of at the moment, then it would be expected (don't think we have that a person that predictable quite yet though). Like, I don't think we were saying entirely the same thing on all points but I'm just wondering how I got away with what I said and he doesn't with his. I've been a bit nervous to see new posts in this thread after my post to be honest. I actually started off writing that just to be stupid but by the time I was done it actually made some sense to me.

Oh, EDIT while I can: Emily is hot. The picture doesn't do her well but she is hot. Perhaps if she had won then a differant photo where she looked better would have been the one to get published. (Sorry here Simpson, but it's the truth for me).

I was simply stating my truthful opinion. Yes, it was a bit harsh, I apoligise if any were offended. However I did state "that photo says it all" meaning that in the photo Emily did not look the best that she could have

Sorry ladies, but I'm going to have to agree with Simpson. Emily does look awful in that photograph, although on TV I find her way more attractive than Kate.

I'm actually glad that Kate won so Emily and Lee can have more successful careers. In fact, Lee's debut single 'Wasabi' will be released on December 12th and will also feature his rendition of 'Eye of the Tiger'. Can't wait to hear it! :-)

The thing that annoyed me about Emily is how she always had a sob story to tell about how she was a little samoan girl whos had such a hard life and now she has a kid and how everything is so hard for her...that annoyed me through out the competion.
I liked how Kate kinda just drifted through, always doing great performances, and didnt have some story to tell. Yes, she does come from a wealthy family but that doesnt mean she deserved it any less than everyone else...she worked just hard, sometimes even harder than most.

No worries about the poll. I think I was being bitchy when I said anything about it.
Also, and just to talk to myself while relating it to your post as well (smiley9sp), I never noticed the personal stories of the contestants. I guess because I didn't really like the Inside Idol show and the Sunday night one I'de watch them sing and watch the interaction with the judges and then be doing something else. Then when someone was about to sing again I'de stop everything. Monday nights, I tended to not pay attention that much until it was time for the 25 minutes of announcing the bottom three.

More of me talking for no good reason and on a tangent not much related to the above paragraph: My wife brought home a gossip magazine and I started flipping through it. I like to call celebrities by their shortened names because I feel like I know them personally that way, like Jen and Brad for example... such a shame they split up. Okay that's not true, I could actually care less but my wife was given that magazine and I was flipping through it and read an article about Lee Harding on logies night and it was really hard to not let it effect my opinion of him and see it for what it was... gossip.

I had a huge dinner 6 hours ago and I'm still full. There's left overs for breakfast too.

Yeah i agree with you tia_ballerina...emily seemed to always feel sorry for herself and her hard life. The thing is that thousands or millions around the world have the same problems as her or perhaps even worse. I think shes trying to portray herself as being from the bronx or the ghetto like jennifer lopez or something like that...

also.. i like how kate was quite humble how she rarely told her sob story about how she was the 'fat kid' at school..she just kept 2 her self all through...

Thats right music313, i think the only time she mentioned "going through school as the fat kid" was when Kate and Emily were at Mark Holdens for dinner or something and he asked them what they wanted Idol for do to them and who they wanted to help etc.

Hmm maybe I was watching a different show but I don't recall Emily whining about being poor or having a tough life. That was more the way the producers decided to portray here to give her "a story", a la Shannon Noll and his "tough farm life and the loss of his father".

I did notice Kate sticking in the "but I was teased as a fat kid" whenever she could. I thought that was a little tasteless trying to compare that to growing up poor but then again neither of them seemed to have had tragic upbringings and we shouldn't be judging them by this anyway. The winner should have been chosen on their musical abilities and I don't think that happened this year.

In fact they should really leave the contestants' personal stories out of it as it effects the way the public view them as performers. And to be honest I'm a little sick of hearing about their personal tragedies. It's personal and should stay that way, we don't want the winner to be the one with the most tragic story.

Kate winning this year seemed all so scripted. Didn't anyone else find it strange how this "poor little fat girl" with little self-confidence all of a suddenly became this confident person that stood tall, thanked all her fans and took the prize and ran with it? I didn't see any nerves or even tears in her acceptance speech.

She had failed the last two years running, moved to Brisbane, became a music teacher and got professional singing training from Vanetta Fields and this year in somewhat of a surprise won Idol.

The media momentum behind Kate towards the end made the finale a forgone conclusion. You could have seen it coming.

I absolutly think that happened this year, their music abilities i thought were pretty much even. I think what got Kate just over the line to win was the fact that she was the real aussie girl, with a great voice and a gorgeous face who seems really down-to-earth.

Through the competition she didnt have lots of self confidence, she didnt think that many people liked her because as was said mnay times throughout the competition, there wasnt as many posters in the audience for her, or as big a "whoo" for her as there was for others. But then when she WON idol im sure that gave her a big, BIG confidence boost right then and there on the spot knowing that so many people love what she does so much they named her the Australian Idol. So she had all this confidence knowing people wanted her there, so she, as you said, became the confident person that stood tall and thanked all her supporters and took the prize as her own.

Perhaps it's an indication of our society where we can more easily relate to a middle-class, daggy, overweight white girl with a pretty face rather than a slightly feral unmarried minority mother from a lower class background who drives a forklift and just wanted to better her and her family's life.

Relating to someone who is more similar to us probably doesn't make us bad people, but it doesn't really make us good people either. I guess these kinda things you gotta expect when you look a little different to everyone else.

It doesn't matter now, both'll have a recording contract in the end anyways.

I think so, most people related to Kate because she WAS daggy and WAS an overweight white girl. This is a subtle form of racism and I think it's a bit of a shame that people (still) think this way.

Yes Emily had 3 touchdowns and Kate had none, but it was Mark Holden who was giving them out and he absolutly adored Emily so he would give her one for anything. Im not saying that Kate didnt get any touchdowns because Mark didnt like her, he just only seemed to give the people he liked touchdowns. Like Laura Gissara, she did ONE bad performance and from then on Mark hated her, i thought she could sing fine, she just did one bad performance and mark hated her so he didnt give her any praise.

I know that even though emily came New Zealand and looked different etc. she is Australian. But i think it was the fact that Kate was the REAL aussie girl that everyone wanted as their Aussie Idol. She can sing too.

I thought Emily deserved to win.

I thought she had the better voice, connected with the crowd better, and was a more accomplished performer on stage. Hence the 3 touch downs.

She moved around and looked natural on stage.

Whereas I thought Kate was like a rabbit caught in headlights on stage. She was awkward, lacked emotion, and didn't connect with the song or the audience.

In fact during her rendition of "How could an angel break my heart" which is a sad song, she actually smiled. But I'm guessing most people didn't pick that up.

(Last year I thought it should have been Courtney or Ricki-Lee and I was happy that Guy won AI 1. Perhaps Courtney should've played the "fat" card but then again his face wasn't pretty enough ;-) )

Anthony was just Mr. Plastic Fantastic... I hated him.

I don't much care for the music that Anthony does and don't think it's in the category of "idol matereal" but I still can't help but to respect that he's kick a** in the little genre that he likes.

Without accusing anyone on the forum of anything, as far as racism in Australia goes, I had a pretty nervous feeling that Emily wouldn't win because she wansn't white when the series was only halfway in. Also... add the working class thing to my list of turn ons, forklifts are cool... they lift things... with a fork like thing. One time, I saw a picture of a small forklift raised all the way to the top of a larger forklift, and the smaller forklift had a load that was raised all the way up... and doing this, the load was able to reach the top of what they were aiming for. I think there should be a forklift olymics. Or forklift death matches where you try to tip over the other forklifts and be the last forklift standing. Then you could use your lifting power to stack all the other abandoned and toppled forklifts on top of each other.

I'm not trying to be racist or anything, but I like the small forklifts that go really fast better than the wide ones that carry heavier things. Also, that would be pretty embarrasing if the only way you had to get to work was to drive a forklift.

Yeah, thats a bummer. But thats only how many UNITS/CDs were sold, im sure it would have added up to alot more if they counted all the ones that were bought from bigpond the night of the final, im sure there was a considerable amount bought then.

OMG! I met THE KATE DeARAUGO YESTERDAY!! She was fantastic! She lit up the stage, as she walked on she was glowing, she just sparkles. She was soooo nice, and genuinely seemed like she wanted to be there. Kates gorgeous, on the outside AND on the inside! She definately deserved to be our idol :)

Actually I was thinking that if I was going to get in next to someone like that for a picture that I'de be standing well to the side of them with my arm outstreched and my hand touching the center of their back or something. Either that or I'de be 3 feet behind them and hoping the camera made it look like I was next to them. It amazes me that people can get so excited and then bend in for a picture with their heads touching, you certainly seized the moment. I would have had an anxiety attack... I actually have in circumstances like that. I either couldn't speak or I just didn't care and felt uncomfortable at the idea of all the attention one person was getting for no reason and there doesn't seem to be any in between.

How big was the crowd by the way?

umm...the crowd was acceptable, there wasnt heaps and HEAPS of people but there was enough. She was schedualed to be there from 2pm - 5pm but she ended up leaving at about 4ish.
LoL! I couldnt really speak either :P There was so many things i wanted to ask her but when i got to her i just looked at her and forgot totally everything, LoL! I just stood there smiling at her as she signed my stuff and looked at my poster...
I told her she was gorgeous and she said "awww, your beautiful" hehehehe Kate DeAraugo called me beautiful :D I was so happy.
Then my camera started beeping coz it was running out of battery and the guy was like "you cameras beeping at me" and i was like "ahhh, its running out of batteries" and Kates like "Hurry!! hurry!!" so i just jumped in there and got the pic :D
Then she told me there was nothing going on between her and James, which im kind of happy about because shes to pretty for him, LoL! Then i told her she was my only Idol out off all the idol years and she said "awww thankyou".
Then i asked to shake her hand and she said "sure" and i started walking away but i didnt want to let her go so i was like leaning back and she was leaning over her table and said "Bye beautiful" and i said "bye", then i let her go and walked down the stairs. That was like the hardest thing i had to do in my life LoL! I didnt want to let her go!!
It was such an amazing day

Yeah Cosima really did kick a**. I didn't follow that season until just before she dropped out but it was dissapointing. I haven't much heard anything she's done since then because I'm old and uncool and I'm too cheap to spend money and too afraid to download it.

That really has nothing to do with the issue at hand though, which is of course the sexy attraction and animal magnatism that occured between Tia Ballerina and Kate lol. I think that if they had more time together then they would have been best mates and had lots of pillowfights. I wouldn't have complained to see pillowfight pictures. I feel bad for you tia_balleria, what could have been was snatched away so quickly and that instant of chemistry now becomes a lonely memory during moments of meloncholy. I beleive that Kate still thinks about you. You should be tagging along on her music tours having fluffy feathery pillowfights (and taking pictures of it), laughing together, and sharing your feelings about all things girly.

umm...im not really sure, i KNOW of about 3 that have a photo from the GC instore but then there is a whole lot of other people who have theres taken with her from her Sydney and Melbourne instores...theres quite a few...none look as good as mine though...LoL, just kidding :P

Kate is planning a tour early next year, no final dates or anything confirmed yet though...very exciting!! :D
Dan.E and Lee are supporting Shannon Noll on his tour early next year, there are final comfimed dates but i dont know what are, i think they start in late January.

fajo seems to think it was a POPULARITY contest and not a TALENT contest...i seem to remember Emily being VERY popular and Lee even more than that, they didnt win though...Kate didnt seem that popular at all throughout the contest...

She performed at the Australia Day Eve concert (that was huge)...she sung at the tennis on Australia Day...she was recently on Lowies...she has recently released her second single Faded (very good i think :D) and she is touring soon (april or may she said). LoL! i went to the auditions last year with my sister but she didnt get through...she can sing good but nothing like the Kate and the rest of the final 13. not understanding this australian idol number 1 thing - I work in a department store and as part of my job i send back all the cd's that don't sell. Im pretty sure that i'll soon be sending back all Kates cd's as we've maybe sold 20 out of all the hundred sent. And as for Lee - i liked him on what i saw of idol but that wasabi song is awful and i don't know how it was "Number 1" when we never sold a copy.

Hey some people are naturally skinny, like I am really tall so no matter how much I eat I don't get fat... I'm not anorexic or anything, just thin.. so it is not neccecarily such a bad thing to be skinny.....it doesnt automatically give you no life!
I think it is awful how people say like ewww hes so pale but you cant say that someone is too "black" can you? you cant be awful about fat people.. so why be mean about thin people..?

I thought both Emily and Kate were great. It was sad to see Emily lose her confidence again once it got closer to the end. They play Maybe Tonight on our radio station every day. I quite like it! I'm not a big Idol fan but at least you hear more of Kate than you do of Casey Donovan. I think we as Australians need to encourage more Australian artists. Its a shame to see so many American acts make it big when we do have some talent here. There have been quite a few good Idol contestants over the years and its sad to see them get bagged out because they were on Idol. Let's get behind them and make this the music country of the world!

Kate is also a very attractive young lady and like someone said it's nice to see someone who looks healthy and is not waif thin (no offence intended to thin ppl!). The current craze amongst US celebrities to starve themselves to bones is absolutely stupid and I must admit I found Kyle Sandilands comments to Kate about "tuckshop lady arms" and other "fat" comments made me see red. More power to her if she does lose the weight but she was comfortable then to show herself as she was and you have to admire her for that.

who knows...she could come back with a multi platinum album in a few years time...once society gets over itself, that is.

She will probably end up like Paulini though. Plenty of talent but nobody wants to buy it. Paulini spends a bit of time on the club circuit. They are the only gigs she can get at the moment.

i know where your coming from..but most of the time the promoting was all done mainly by the producers and the record company affiliated with australian idol..theres only so much the idols can do by promoting themselves..

basically the media lets people see want they want them to see..and most likely the media didnt promote casey very well as they did with shannon noll, anthony callea and so on..

we'll have to wait and see in the long run...before we can judge the true success of the idols...

The rumour mill has gone into overdrive with speculation that AI winner Kate DeAraugo is romancing David Campbell.
The pair were clearly into eachother at a recent charity event in Sydney where they both performed.
