Nine's third channel GEM starts September 24 A day before 7mate starts

Nine chases women viewers with GEM Amanda Meade From: The Australian September 13, 2010 4:04PM
FEMALE viewers over 35 will get a dedicated free-to-air digital channel by the end of the month when Nine launches its third multi-channel: GEM.
However, Nine is having a bet each way as GEM will also run all Nine's sport in high definition until the digital switchover in December 2013.
This programming anomaly is to compensate for the loss of the Nine HD channel, which will on September 24 be taken over by GEM.
Nine already has the most successful of the multi-channels, GO!, which regularly out-rates 7TWO and Ten's sports channel ONE. On the same weekend Seven is launching male skewed channel called 7MATE.
“GEM is what its title suggests - a general entertainment and movie channel, carefully crafted and targeted like GO! before it, to appeal to a wide audience cross-section and complement Nine's existing successful brands,” Nine CEO David Gyngell said today.
“GEM will also include news and current affairs programs that will be different but complimentary to the news and programs on the main channel.
“We have a very significant investment in news and current affairs, and some of that content will be repackaged to fit with the style of GEM.”
The Big C, starring Laura Linney, is the headline program on GEM, along with a new season of Weeds, and other first-run imports including Southland, Miami Medical, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, The New Adventures of Old Christine.
Lifestyle programs - some of which also run on Foxtel - also feature heavily: Wife Swap, Secret Millionaire USA, The Chopping Block USA and How Clean is Your House?
Local content includes a new season of Random Acts of Kindness with Shelley Craft, Scott Cam, Dr Andrew Rochford and Simmone Jade Mackinnon and re-runs of Nine dramas McLeod's Daughters, Sea Patrol and The Alice.

BLEAUGH! Miami Medical... excellent show and only lasted one season. Maybe I am not a typical female viewer but really, nothing on GEM so far has rung my bells. |

GEM is a crap channel! Seriously there is nothing worth watching on it. Oh and I hate how Today is on at the same time as the main channel. We want variety!!! And I heard... wait for it... it's a doozy! that they will be airing Cricket and Rugby League on the channel even though GEM is for the typical female viewer. (How many females like Cricket all day long in the summer? ) Oh and it will also be airing on the main channel at the SAME time also!! It's stupid. GEM might as well should not exist!! |

I dont think I am missing much by not being able to receive GEM. Here in Esperance we only get ABC 1-4, SBS 1/2 and WIN and GWN...............at least it saves us from watching too much crap.....lol |

I haven't had much of a watch or even a hard look at their programming however I think I must be the only person so far that's found decent stuff to watch a couple times since its started.
I hadn't clicked on this thread until after it launched because I thought GEM must be a new TV show and just sort of reckoned I may or may not see it on the schedule and may or may not watch it depending up what time it was on and what it was up against. |
