PARAGUAY World Cup star Salvador Cabanas is fighting for his life after having been shot in the head in the toilet of a trendy Mexico City bar.

The 29-year-old, who plays his club football with Club America of the Mexican league, remains in a serious condition following the incident, which saw his attacker flee the scene.

"His condition remains serious," said Dr Ernesto Martinez, the chief of surgeons at the hospital where the player, who is under sedation, underwent emergency surgery.

Martinez added that Cabanas, the 2007 South American footballer of the year, had been fed and had already received some physical therapy.

Mickelson chooses holiday over Match Play
SAN DIEGO, California - Phil Mickelson will skip the World Golf Championships Match Play Championship next month, taking his family on a holiday delayed by his wife's cancer treatment.

Mickelson, preparing to make his season debut at the Farmers Insurance Open, which tees off at Torrey Pines on Thursday, said his wife, Amy, is responding well to teatment and her longterm prognosis is good.

He says her health prevented previous holidays, and he wants to make them up when their three children are on spring break from school the week of the Match Play, February 17-21, near Tucson, Arizona.

Mickelson, ranked number two in the world, said other parts of his early schedule could also be affected.
