Just a quick poll before WA goes to the Daylight Saving referendum in a few weeks time. All things being equal, WA will vote No yet again. Yet it will be close and the supporters are coming out from both sides now with all sorts of interesting arguements as usual.

The thing that has struck me this weekend is the number of Eastern staters I've heard on the radio wishing they didn't have to have daylight saving, and annoyed that it stretches longer each year it seems.

What are your thoughts about daylight saving?

And what do you think of the arguements supporters of either side put up in their debates?

I love it, but it needs to stop at the end of March, not the beginning of April.

I lived from it's implimentation in NSW until December 1993. I raised 2 children with it and it drove me nuts then especially because they were put to bed in daylight/dusk. It throws you out for a week with each time change. Originally Daylight saving went for 3 or 4 months then they have kept creeping it up until now it is 6 months which I believe is way too long. I do not miss it. The rest of my family in NSW don't particularly like it, they all live inland Central West/Southern Tablelands area. I suppose it depends also what area you live in... Coast/City/Country. My son in Perth enjoyed it in WA for the last trial as did his wife.

I'm a fan of DLS. But I can't see it passing at the referndum. The oppossition to DLS seem to be using quite a few scare tactics, associating the word "cancer" with the extra hour of daylight.

Personally, I like being able to get home from Uni around 5-6pm and still have enough daylight to head down the beach or go do something outside. Otherwise there isn't much point.

One opposing argument that has some merit, is for those who train in the early morning. I know quite a few people who do rowing, and 5.30am during DLS is pitch black, as apposed to dople light in standard time. But this seems to be reasoning everyone is jumping on, despite applying to the minority.

Perth is a notoriously backwards city, unable to accept change with people who continually profess Not In My Back Yard, known as NIMBY's. I think it will be these NIMBY's who will decide this vote. *sigh*

I can honestly say here in SEQ when I lived near a Retirement Village the oldies used to sh** me senseless in the summer time because they would be up as early as 4am and walking past my townhouse, standing on the road outside my bedroom window yacking to other retirees from the village so loud I could hear every word. I even called out for them to shut up a couple of times. I mean 4-6am, anyone talking loudly should be a hangable offense Just coz they go to bed with the chooks

WA FARMERS are standing by a claim that daylight saving leads to more road deaths, despite revelations that the author of the research is a dog trainer.

After a three-year trial that served only to deepen the public divide on daylight saving in WA, a May 16 poll will decide whether the state should permanently wind the clocks back an hour during the summer months.

The West Australian Farmers Federation (WAFF) has launched a controversial internet and poster campaign against daylight saving, which depicts a white cross beside a road as a car flashes by.

The poster says the extra hour of daylight at the end of the day and time changes lead to fatigue and an increase in road accidents, based on a study by American Stanley Coren.

Former Liberal MP and daylight-saving advocate Matt Birney has today disputed Dr Coren's study, saying the author of books such as Why We Love the Dogs We Do and The Intelligence of Dogs was not a road safety expert.

``This will go down as one of the more humorous moments of the 2009 referendum given that the ``no'' campaign appear to be taking their road safety advice from Dr Dolittle,'' Mr Birney said.

''(Dr Coren) lacks credibility. There are lots of professionals out there that have looked at his research and said as much.''

WAFF president Mike Norton on Monday defended the 1996 research by Dr Coren, of the University of British Columbia, which said traffic accidents rose by approximately eight per cent on the first work day after a time change.

``Dr Coren is a psychologist, and a lot of his work has been cross-referenced with work by a range of other eminent people,'' Mr Norton said.

``Since we started the campaign, we have received lots of anecdotal evidence from bus drivers, traffic controllers, hoteliers, fast food outlets and second-hand evidence from police that they dread daylight saving, because once it starts people's behaviour patterns change.''

I love it...because when its lighter in the morning, I want to get up and get going.
But my state doesn't have it...and thats annoying...'cause the TV times change and the TV guide doesn't...so I often miss my programmes...also if talking to people in other states or countries...you have to work out what time it is there. Best if we all changed together.

The answer to the divisive problem of daylight savings is to extend the business hours throughout Australia in summer by an hour and let people have the choice of having the extra hour before work or after work to suite their own preference. Rostering could solve any problems of shortage of people to fill in any gaps in the coverage.

Well I must say I haven't missed it this year. In fact I think I've slept better than ever without the extended night light.

Yep, I am glad we in Queensland don't have it. Older people in NSW hate it.

When I went to Melbourne I really enjoyed it Not in Sydney so much but Melbourne is so bustly

I hated it in Tamworth NSW because it was such a long hot summer there. I didn't like it much in Cowra NSW either. It all tied in with having smaller children then and it was pretty hard. I have found people in SEQld tend to get up at 4 or 5am and go for a walk/swim at the beach or out here, just a walk in the bush.
