The new Fox drama "Lie to Me" involves a whole new level of acting. In addition to movement and action, there are the teeny subconscious facial tics and tells that are prt of the show's central premise: That a well trained professional can tell by looking when people are lying.

It's a lot of work for the staff too.

"I'd never directed a chin before or just a nose," "Lie to Me" director Samuel Baum said at press tour last week. "But the amazing thing about the science is that, when you're experiencing the emotion genuinely, these expressions will happen unconsciously. So there are two ways to approach it with the actors. One is from the technical side to say, okay, we need these muscles contracting to make this gesture. Or you can actually get the actor to genuinely feel the emotion, and the expression will follow."

The series is based on the work of Dr. Paul Ekman, who has written about it. And the knowledge can wreck other parts of life.

"It completely changes the way you watch the Oscars," says Buam. "Because one of the things Dr. Ekman has proven is that when we fake an emotion, the expression looks anatomically different from when we're genuinely feeling it. So a fake smile looks anatomically different from a real smile."

For Tim Roth, who plays the truth evaluator, it's a chance to use his British accent instead of trying to fake an American accent, as does his countryman Hugh Laurie on "House."

"I've done dialects a lot, and I know the work that goes into it and that you have to get pretty specific to convince some people that that's where you're from," Roth said. "I don't know how Hugh does it."

Besides, said producer David Nevins, "I think audiences are more comfortable with the British accent than we give them credit for, Simon Cowell and Gordon Ramsay, they speak with British accents."

What is this? Is this what I've seen advertised on 10?

Yep it is.  I rather think it's something akin to The Mentalist (which I love), so I'll give it a go.

I think the pilot only just aired in the U.S., and it will air really soon on Channel Ten (if not this coming week).

Not as endearing as the Mentalist. Very spot on with 'tells' and 'body language' and 'facial expressions'. It is all about observation, like the Mentalist. I have watched 2 episodes and have to say I liked it but would not rave about it but it will probably grow on me to the point where I have to watch it.

Ooo...I can't wait for this. I love Tim Roth. So happy he gets to use his own accent this time too.

EDIT: My seven year old nephew was fascinated by the ads for this. He asked me the other day "Do you watch Lie to me?" I said "No, it hasn't started yet" he said "He can tell that you're lying just by looking at you! He has the same power as my mummy!!"
Hahahaha! Kids are gorgeous.

I didn't like it, it was too exaggerated and you didn't need to be a genius to notice most of the over-acted gestures... maybe its just like that in the pilot to give an idea of what the show is about but I really hope they calm down a little.
