Rosie O'Donnell's attempt to breathe life back to the mordant television variety format has failed, something that she has acknowledged on her website. "There will b [sic] no more" variety specials, she said. Her special last Wednesday, Rosie Live, drew only about five million viewers, fewer than those who watched the ratings-challenged Knight Rider, which the special preempted. It also drew a flood of derogatory notices from critics. Rosie herself summed up: "No ratings/bad reviews/yet still -- a thrill 4 me." The failure of the special was regarded as a coup de grāce to last-place NBC, coming as it did on the final night of the November sweeps.

I was reading this on the Internet movie database.com site & it seems that variety is not the spice of life for the American TV viewing public ... really?  Couldn't see that happening!

Come on, do you honestly believe that the North American viewing public, with the concentration span of small kindergarten children would willingly watch a very butch, overweight & openly hostile lesbian singing show tunes?  I am simply playing the Devil's Advocate when I say this, but she honestly believes because a segment of the population in New York support her on Broadway, that the rest of the country will...

Osbourne In Verbal Attack On Reporter
27 March 2009 12:05 AM, PDT

Sharon Osbourne launched a blistering tirade against a reporter who questioned whether her superstar family is suitable to host a new TV variety show.

Osbourne, Black Sabbath star Ozzy and their children Kelly, 24, and Jack, 23, are returning to U.S. TV screens following their wildly popular reality series The Osbournes to front the upcoming Osbournes Reloaded.

But their small screen comeback was dealt a blow after Osbourne flew into a rage during a telephone conference call on Thursday.

A journalist asked Osbourne if she believed it was appropriate for her clan, which has struggled to overcome substance abuse problems, to host a family variety programme, which prompted the rock matriarch to defend her loved ones in an angry rant.

She responded, "That must be the most ridiculous question I have ever been asked in my entire career. I'm really angry. Do you know how many people in this country alone suffer from addiction? This is a terrible epidemic that covers every race. It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, black or white. It's an epidemic of drugs and alcohol in this country. Okay? And all my family are examples of being truthful about their condition and working through it and trying to better themselves as human beings.

"You know that we have been so open about our lives. My husband has struggled with addiction his entire life. And my son has been clean and sober for six years and lives a very, very strict AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) lifestyle. And, so if anything he is a beacon of hope to any young person in this country who is struggling with addiction.

"So when you talk about family, we are family and we are a real family. I've taken real offence, because you know why? We're real people. And probably half of the people watching our show, they have someone in their family who has a problem with alcohol and drugs."

Kelly recently completed a second stint of rehab to treat an addiction to painkillers, while Jack and rocker Ozzy have also battled drug and drink demons.

Osbournes Show Banned In Florida
31 March 2009 12:06 PM, PDT

The Osbournes' new reality TV show has been banned by a Florida community, after local network bosses ruled it was too lewd for viewers.

Seven years after they launched the reality TV craze, the foul-mouthed rock clan are back with a new variety show, Osbournes: Reloaded - which will premiere on Tuesday night across the U.S., except for Panama City, Florida.

Bosses at Fox network affiliate Wpgx are refusing to screen the programme and will replace it with episodes of The Simpsons instead.

Wpgx general manager David Cavileer tells local reporters, "I just felt it was not keeping with community standards. This show in my market does not serve my public in Panama City. I did not feel it was appropriate."

because North Americans are mental

You can buy an automatic rifle over-the-counter, yet I was watching a cooking program last night & it was about a piglet gently simmered in a new variety of Asian spice infused liquid.  They actually blurred the piglet, because it might have caused distress.  It was dead, a suitably prepared by a butcher many hours before the TV camera was even switched on
