Eew. Newstopia's ratings are dreadfully low.

I was gonna say, what's happening to Australian TV is everyone switching off? Ratings haven't really been that high this year.

perhaps more people signing up with pay tv?

According to http://www.afc.gov.au/gtp/wptvsubsxops.html mid last year there were 2.1 million subscribers nationwide to the 3 providers (they are all the same really).  So that was 2.1 million watching on average 60% of their television on foxtel, only 40% of viewing time on free to air (i can't back up this percentage officially, and am not gonna spend the time reviewing the dvtforum website for more details).

Now that was mid last year. And now foxtel has gone digital and had a mass advertising campaign to go with it. so i'm assuming a further jump in viewer numbers? unfortunately i can't find them.... but this could be the cause of ratings downturn? mind you, Monday doesnt seem to be struggling too much, the top 12 shows have constantly been over 1million viewers.

Swing to ABC
Article from: The Sunday Tasmanian

SOUTHERN Tasmanian TV viewers are turning away from American comedy and drama and increasingly tuning in to the ABC.

Survey results for the first three weeks of this year's ratings season show the ABC competing strongly with its commercial counterparts and in two weeks outrating both WIN and Southern Cross in the South.

Friends of the ABC president Melissa Sharpe said although the ABC should not concern itself with chasing high ratings, it was a positive sign that the community supported the public broadcaster.

"It signals that sufficient funding to the ABC should be continued in order to keep up this good programming," she said.

The ABC's top-rating shows include English offerings The Bill, Doc Martin, Dalziel and Pascoe, Robin Hood and Agatha Christie's Miss Marple as well as Australian music quiz show Spicks and Specks.

In the first ratings week (February 10 to 16) for the South of the state, ABC won a total audience share of 32.1 per cent, while last year's ratings winner Southern Cross reached 27.2 per cent and the one-day international cricket helped WIN reach 32.6.

In the second week (February 17-23) ABC led the way on 34.7 per cent, followed by Southern Cross on 29.5 per cent and WIN on 28.9.

And in the third week the split was ABC 32.3 per cent, Southern Cross 30.5 and WIN 29.7.

Southern Cross program manager Gill Wilson said ABC's ratings were traditionally stronger in the South and the latest increase could be due to ABC tailoring its programming to appeal to a much broader market.

"The ABC used to be a very academic market with a strong emphasis on documentaries," she said.

"But now that the ABC is carrying programs with a broader appeal, their ratings have increased greatly around the country, it's not just happening here."

WIN promotions and publicity manager for Victoria and Tasmania Cameron Best said the Channel Nine-affiliated network was not concerned about ABC's ratings spike.

"That sort of result could easily be the result of our four-station analogue ratings system and the fact that we have such a small sample of viewers in Tasmania," he said.

In statewide terms, ABC slipped behind Southern Cross again for those first three weeks, rating 28.8 per cent, 31 and 29.3.

Southern Cross rated 33 per cent, 34.9 and 36.8 statewide for each week, while WIN rated 30 per cent, 26.3 and 26.1.

Very few of the highly promoted new US TV series made an appearance in the top 20 programs for the first three weeks.

Instead, the top performers tended to be reality shows such as Southern Cross's RSPCA Animal Rescue, Border Security, The Force and The Real Seachange.

Ms Wilson said series like Desperate Housewives or Underbelly often dropped slightly in the ratings after their initial screenings due to their episodic nature.

Ms Sharpe said her only concern was that the ABC did not get caught up in a ratings battle.

"The ABC needs to remain free of any pressure from commercial or government sectors and as long as it maintains a good quality of entertainment it's a good thing," she said.

I'm guessing both weeks? Why on earth would they take off Desperate Housewives and replace it with some crappy movie?

I think that may be because this site has to much competition with more members on the other sites which leads to more discussion. I know I frequent eBlah alot less than I used to, IDK what can be done to improve it?

Another reason could be because it has been a non-ratings period the last two weeks?

Yeah, other sites have more active contribution, or are a lot more focused on tv ratings where as this site has a lot more variety and this thread gets a little neglected. Dont know how or if it can be improved let alone fixed.

On your comment Seriously about it being non ratings, that may explain the last two weeks but the last two nights of this weeks ratings period have been pretty interesting with Gladiators getting 1.85 mill viewers and The Power of 10 bombing with 700,000 viewers.

at the Power of 10... another failed quiz show for Channel 9 (lets hope Temptation doesn't stay that way). I flicked over to it a couple of times last night while watching Dance, and it was B-oring!

Speaking of quiz shows and the sort on Channel 9, I heard a rumour Channel 9 have picked up Wheel of Fortune.

Well, variety is good. At least this site isn't Nazi's like neighboursfans.com.
Oh man, if Gladiators did well, that probably means that TBL bombed
@ nine.
