Paula I have read in a letter that you issued on the 25th of Feb. Which states that when you first left school there was a particular apprenticeship that you wished to apply for but were unable to do so on the grounds that it was strictly for Aboriginals and Torrens Straight islanders which you felt was rather racist which makes me ask the question why have  you  given Steven such a hard time over his concerns that the aboriginals are receiving more welfare benefits than himself  I understand that he was unable to show any credible proof to back up his claim and that he probably isn’t explaining himself  quite as well as others still  be that as it may  I can scarcely see why you felt it  necessary to pull him throw the ringer over it and as far as his claims are concerned I myself have no knowledge of what a white person receives on a disability pension for I have worked my entire adult life. I am how ever able to tell you how much money an aboriginal gets on the dole per week for my husband is receiving that particular payment and that is $500 a week and as far as I am concerned if what Steven is claming is true that   he’s only receiving only $250 a week it is unfair especially when you take into consideration he like my husband was also raised in a children’s home and badly abused any way this is my opinion for what its worth

She was actually quoting me on my experience when I was looking for a job many moons ago. Apart from that the rest are Paula's words.

Your “husband” would be getting all sorts of extra benefits that any single male of any colour would not get - You are comparing apples with oranges.

I have read the rates for welfare payments and even though there is no side-by-side comparison chart that I know of, the difference between the two payments is only minor, but the starting rate for a single male is the same.

Jealousy is a hard thing to live with and it makes our lives miserable - Saying they get double or even near double is just not true.

I have never pulled Steven through the ringer about anything.  I merely pointed out some inaccuracies in his statement, as per the figures he supplied.  I also mentioned that we (my husband and I) had been on a disability pension, so we do know what it is like.

Is it really only driven by ignorance? I think for the most part yes, however I think some of it comes from fear. I myself am white, however I go to a very diverse high school, including mostly whites(55%) blacks, guyanese, afghan, pakistani, latin and asian making up the rest. And although I myself have never explicitly seen a direct example of racism, I can see where it could stem from. I think a lot of the segregation amongst social circles that I see primarily comes from lifestyle choices. In my school there is a bunch of "wiggers" who are widely accepted amongst black social circles along with guyanese wiggers for lack of a better term. It seems that although we as a society contribute a thug or hip hop lifestyle to primarily black people, it seems that at my school it is whoever adopts that thug or hip-hop lifestyle is accepted within that particular circle. There is no racism that I see, merely segregation based on lifestyles.

Another question I have is that if anyone sees segregation based on music or clothing?

I'd also like to bring to the table this new finding for myself, the existance of "sundown towns". If you don't know what these are, it's a really unfortunate part of our history, but they're towns where Blacks aren't allowed in town after dark. In fact some our nations leaders have come from such towns. McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, d**k Chenney, Harry Truman, Lyndon B Johnson, which I found ironic seeing as how he continued the civil rights movement and started the great society. But tell me this isn't scary! The facts are there, in many places census records show the decline or non-existance of Blacks in some communities, where whites passed legislation and started riots as blacks would try to move into town.

ksnow_22, It is obvious you live in the US. We in Australia have had a different kind of history to you. These days, fr example, way up in North Queensland there are ‘dry’ communities where alcohol is banned from that community because the aboriginals are very hard to control when fuelled with alcohol. Not that that is racism IMHO because it is stopping the drunkenness that would endanger some in the community.
Where I grew up those aboriginal’s who were on welfare lived on a Mission away from the main part of the town, across the river actually. Those aboriginals who were working and contributing to the community as decent citizens and not sitting around burning their houses, plank by plank, had their own Government funded housing dotted throughout the town. All of the aborigines had the same opportunities especially when it came to education and in 1950 and probably many years before, aborigines took their place in a mixed classroom environment. We had Greeks and Italians as well due to an Immigration Camp years before that. My generation grew up to be very tolerant of others, whether they were black, white, yellow or green! My daughter-in-law is full blooded Chinese and I can tell you, most people on mainland China are racist against Westerners. The Military, Police and Government hate Westerners especially Americans. My son, 182cm, skin as white as snow, weighing 100kg was beaten into submission by a group of Policemen in a mainland city, who saw him on his own and talking on his mobile phone. He still had bruises on the back of his legs, especially his calves, when he returned 2 weeks later. He lay on the ground, face down while they beat him and of course no-one could do a thing about it. These ‘Chinese’ people cannot tell the difference between someone from the US, Great Britain, Australia, some parts of Europe and places in between. Therefore they treat all Westerner’s the same. The only reason places like China and many other countries both Asian and European put up with westerners because of the tourist dollars, otherwise they would not welcome us with open arms. BTW Hong Kong is pretty different from mainland China because HK is multicultural.  As long as there are people of different colour, culture, and religions, ksnow_22, there will be racism. Racism, IMHO, comes from ignorance.

I don't think I'd ever want to go to China. My uncle says it's really good etc...... I'd rather go to Europe any day. Sounds much safer from what you said Suzi :S

China is really no different from any other country.  It's just than when we go to another country we are on the other side of the racism and abuse.  The way we are treaded is really a mirror of how we (Australians) treat others.

What defines an Australian?
A lot of racism I see seems to come from the Balkan and Turkish/Lebanese etc bunch (what's a word for them?) ......... and a lot of racism from white Australian's is against American's mainly........ although in Sydney they seemed SO racist. Here not so much.

Anyway, what I was going to say, is that I don't go around beating people up.
