Dara gets confused at times. I have said before that I don't loathe everything on TEN. I don't like CDS because it's inane drivel. I do however watch some shows on TEN, e.g. Judge Judy, Law and Order, TGYH and 2006 Australian Idol (I like the auditions). The issue I have with TEN is that their progamming appears narrow-minded.

I loathe political rhetoric of most persuasions because they speak from the corner of their mouths. TV at the moment is for those with no imagination so I don't bother with it and you won't see me join in Home & Away or BB topics.

Hi my name is Lee and I am in my 50s (only just) I live in Brisbane with my life partner.

We have 5 cats, two mortgages, a car, a motorbike and I like so many different things it would be hard to go into.

Politically I guess I walk the tightrope, in my youth I was staunch left wing, but as I have got older and the passions have cooled into more logical thought processes, my politics have changed. I have come to realise that not all politicians are bad, not all are good. So I base my opinions on what I know and how things affect me.

I love forums, I love to exchange opionions with others, but I am not into flame wars so when it gets too hot in the kitchen, I will retreat. To me forums are for enjoyment and fun, not for angst and anger.

I love Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain. And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne....(oh ooops sorry got carried away)

I do have a sense of humor, bit strange at times, but I love to laugh.

Thanks for the welcome Candy and LB. I’m glad I happened on this place. I’ve been posting to an international forum for years but Australians are in the minority there, so it’s great to come across a lively forum where Aussies are in the majority.

And the fact that you’ve got a flying pig already uploaded was the deal maker.

I always have a flying pig for an avatar: that and my sig line pretty much sums up my attitude on life.

And Candy... it’s great to find another pig lover. When I get sufficient funds and a suitable place, I’m going to have a miniature pig for a pet.

Yeah, you’ve got to love animals – they tend to be better behaved than people, don’t they? (With the possible exception of most of eblah’s members, of course. *nods*)

As for the name, well Bev is my name and the Aunty part is both a job description and an honorary title. (Once upon a time Aunties were both plentiful and free ranging and they kept neighbours, streets and even entire communities in order. Nowadays they’re on the verge of extinction. I’m trying to revive them before I reach my twilight years and set up the Guerrilla Grannies.)

I’m not sure I’ll be able to contribute much when it comes to discussing TV shows, but we’ll see. And I’m sure I’ll find plenty of other discussions in which to put my uninvited oar.

I reckon it was one of my posts that google picked out for Australia and Dictator, or at least a thread I got mad in. Anyway, welcome AuntyBev.

And Dara, I’m glad your cousin lives nowhere near me, cos I’m collecting pigs too.

And yeah, SuziH, that pig’s one of my favs. Sort of reminds me of myself when I was younger, cuter and definitely more flighty.

And as for you, Tasman, hmmm....I think what you meant to say was that the pigs found you arresting – as I’m sure they would because pigs are very discerning creatures.

Which makes me wonder why they suffer such a massive perception turnabout when humans reach adolescence. It’s soooo unfair!

When you’re a baby, pigs are cute likkle creatures that make you laugh when one heads off to market and one doesn’t; then one tucks into the roast beef while another appears to be a vegetarian; and then there’s that last likkle piggie with a prostrate problem that goes wee, wee, wee all the way home providing a good community service along the way by watering the various trees and shrubs.

And then, as you get older, you’re told that enlightened and uplifting story of the three pigs who did the right thing by moving out into their own houses instead of bludging off their parents. Unfortunately two of them fell victim to sub-prime mortgages and failed to keep the wolf from the door, but the third showed admirable community spirit by taking in the less fortunate of his species and letting them share his home – and I’m glad he got his reward by claiming them as dependents.

And then you work your way through years of cutesy cartoon piggies (especially on the ABC) to Winnie the Poo’s pal, Piglet. And what a kindly soul Piglet is! Sure, the odd kangaroo gets loose in the top paddock but somebody has to have an IQ low enough to drag down the average so the rest of the pigs can score well, and Piglet is just the kind of chap to make that sacrifice for the good of all.

So pigs start off with the best (and incidentally well deserved) reputation as far as humans are concerned but, somewhere during adolescence, their reputation does a complete 180 for no sane or logical reason.

Totally unfair as far as I’m concerned! Pigs are exemplary creatures. If you want to know the true self-centred sociopath of the animal kingdom, look no further than a cat.

Not your cat, of course, your cat is the exception to the rule but, generally speaking, there's no earthly reason why a 'fat cat' should suddenly become a 'capitalist pig'.

Well said, and your writing abilities remind me that I'm incredibly average in general. That isn't a bad thing no matter which way it pulls me... up or down. Average is refreshing, often times.

You have no idea how much I admire and respect people who work towards self-improvement. Everybody’s capable of it but it’s amazing how rarely they bother to do anything about it.

As far as writing ability is concerned, I can help you with that quest for self-improvement if you like. Personally, I think it’s worth the effort because so few people bother and, if you’re one of the few, you really stand out.

Let me break it down for you...

Firstly there’s a matter of spelling, grammar etc. That can be learned, and the Readers’ Digest book, “How to write and speak better” is an excellent one stop shop if you want to do just that. Once you know the rules, you can break them – which I often do – but you can only get away with that sort of thing if it’s obvious you know the rules.

Secondly there’s vocabulary. Again, that’s an area where you can improve. Get a dictionary and thesaurus; check out web resources like dictionary.com’s word of the day etc. You can also improve your vocabulary enormously with a knowledge of morphemes. (Morphemes are the parts of words that have meanings of their own. For example telephone, television and telegraph all start with ‘tele’ which is Greek for far; so ‘tele’ is used in words which convey the concept of transmission over a distance and the endings tell you what is being transmitted over that distance.)

Thirdly there’s the bleeding obvious: the more you read, the better your writing will be.

Then we move into the realm of natural intelligence. I just happen to have been born with a high verbal IQ. It’s nothing to boast of because it’s not a personal achievement. And as far as what I do with my natural ability is concerned, well we all tend to specialize in what we’re naturally good at – and that’s why I’m not a musician or an athlete. It’s no different than happening to be born with blonde hair. My other forum(s) are high IQ and my verbal intelligence tends to stand out there but, in those groups, I’m down near the bottom as far as logical/mathematical and visual/spatial intelligences are concerned. (And my particular geekiness seems to be one of a kind too!

But that’s a different story.)

Before we leave the subject of intelligence, a high emotional intelligence (EQ) can also be an important part of a good writer – as far as fiction goes. It’s pretty self-evident, really: the better you are at understanding characters/personalities, the better you’ll be at writing about them. The major exceptions to this are certain specialist genre. For example, the most important element of most detective fiction is a good plot that keeps you guessing ‘who dunnit’ so great works of detective fiction rely more on logical/mathematical intelligence rather than emotional intelligence; and the characters in detective fiction don’t have to be well developed for the book to work. That’s why some of the greatest detectives eg Poirot and Holmes have eccentric appearances and mannerisms – it distracts you from the fact that you never really get to know them as people.

But, if you get someone who happens to be born with exceptionally high verbal and emotional intelligence, then you’ve got another Shakespeare! Decades ago a very dear friend of mine went back to school because she needed year 12 to get into a nursing course and, of all the plays, she ended up having to study Macbeth! She just couldn’t get it to gel until I rewrote the play as a short story. I updated the lot by turning Macbeth into a corporate type with an ambitious wife; I turned the witches into bright young computer hackers and so on. Every character in that play is so superbly written that I could update them all and put them in a modern story so my friend could recognise them. After that, it was simply a matter of watching the video a few times so she could get a feel for the language and then she was acing the assignments!

The last component of good writing is creativity. Most academics in this area tend to agree that there is such a beast as creative intelligence and a number of them have developed some sort of test for it – but none of them agree on the tests.

For the most part, I tend to have zero interest in that sort of debate however, because I’ve had a lifetime of being asked where my ideas come from, I’ve worked out what Da Vinci, Monty Python and I have in common; and I believe that it’s possible for almost anyone to make better use of whatever creative intelligence that they might happen to have. I’m hoping to write the book on this next year. (This year has been a shocker for my family.)

Anyhoo...what do Da Vinci, Monty Python and I all have in common? We’re all OLE thinkers – Observation, Linking and Examination/Evaluation. Da Vinci observed the protective qualities of a tortoise/turtle shell, linked it with his observations regarding the war on his doorstep, and came up with the idea of a tank. Monty Python linked observations about bureaucracy/public servants with peculiar gaits (and let’s face it, anyone with legs as long as Cleese is going to look funny when they move) and came up with the Ministry of Silly Walks. And I recently linked traditional stories with modern social concepts and retold the stories. And if you ever watch The Inventors, you’ll see that a lot of ‘shed bloke’ inventors are doing exactly the same thing.)

OLE thinking is fantastic for creating humour, but it’s also good for a lot of other things too. It’s particularly useful for jolting your brain out of a circular thinking rut. And that’s how I came to develop certain exercises for OLE thinking ; and I believe that they’re exercises that anyone can try so they can make best use of their natural ability – whatever that happens to be.

If anyone’s interested and wants to give it a try, then I’ll start a thread on it. You’d be doing me a favour.

I particularly love your country because, when I was there in 1985, my husband, myself and a mutual friend happened to call in for lunch at a motel restaurant somewhere in the Alps and the guy who served us happened to be a doppelganger for John Cleese. Seriously, he looked exactly like him (but didn’t behave like him, of course).

And it was a surreal experience because the restaurant had breathtaking views which I really wanted to drink in but I simply couldn’t because I couldn’t get Basil Fawlty out of my head!

I was also in Switzerland for your national day! Damn but you guys know how to party!

Have you tried to publish Aunty? It must be particularly hard in the case of something where you're improvising from other very well known works.

I'm not entirely ungifted at writing... except for spelling, grammar, and most of the other stuff you mentioned

I find I have my own creative styles, but I lose focus if I leave the keyboard for any amount of time to get distracted on another task, so there isn't a truly creative entire book in me unless its either partially autobiographical, or a bit of ramble while telling a story that goes off on many tangents while attempting to maintain a focus of direction. I've had quite a few people enjoy what I write and encourage me to do things I can try to sell, but the motivation is just not there for me, and its there much less now than it used to be as far as using writing as a personal tool for my own entertainment. I get the feeling that our writing styles would be night and day, as what I've been most recently more interested in is a disorganised approach. It probably fits my personality as well and is what I mean when I say autobiographical. I realise that autobiographical can be rather boring for half the audience though, and for most of the audience as well, by the time you read book number 3 or 4 written by the same person.

I think more than anything, perhaps I just like to get my thoughts out of my head, and sometimes online that means inflicting those thoughts upon others

So, I'm no writer by anyone's standards that is genuinely good at it, but I am by my own

Self improvement comes as a necessity at times I guess. Its only been very recently that I found I was actually able to do so in a way... hmm... I have to leave in 3 minutes and don't have shoes on, and there's a pot on the stove, and I'm not sure how to put this across. Perhaps later.

I’ve had various short stories, articles etc published, but I generally lack the self discipline to redraft – unless it’s paid work and/or I’m really trying to sell to an audience. I’ve never been interested in writing a novel – although there are two major exceptions to that:
1. I tried romance writing because people actually buy those novels. It’s formula writing but it’s a great little earner if you can do it. I also have the advantage of having travelled to some pretty amazing places so I could write the settings extremely well. But I fail miserably when it comes to the whole romance part. Every attempt that I’ve made ends up as humour and that’s the one thing that’s not wanted in romance novels: they want sincerity and I’m simply not the romantic type and I can’t fake it. It’s a crying shame because, if I could, I could earn myself over a hundred thousand a year for just a few weeks work.
2. And that leads me to my second exception... The Canadian government runs an annual Three Day Novel Writing Competition – from memory it’s in October. I think I might try it again next year. Want to join me? Essentially you write a novel in 72 hours – just for the hell of it.

The books I intend to write are based on theory and research – OLE Thinking followed by Arse-Up behaviour Management Theory. They’ll be hard work to write, and I’ll really have to get tough with the self discipline but I don’t anticipate any problems with getting a publisher in the USA or Europe. I’ve got some useful people interested in my ideas and who enjoy my particular style.
