I heard that passenger airlines might allow passengers to carry and us their mobile phones on board during flight.

Myself, well I am a bit sceptical of it's usage in flight. What if it sparks an accident in flight, maybe interfere with the controls. But what is good about it, well we know what happened in USA, on 9/11 where a passenger on a flight that was destined to slam into the white house when that plane was hi-jacked. Plus, those 9/11 terrorists might have used mobiles on planes.

I don't know, what do you e-blahers think??

i think they should have mobiles on planes but switched off except for an emergency, i don't really think there's really a need for people to be calling each other on a plane.

Modern phones are very different to their predecessors . . interference is not an issue any more.

*I just like to have some time when my phone is off - away from the office 'leash'*  now that chance has gone . .

You have to remember that the controls that were previously affected are now guarded off the Mobile signals. I think it's a great idea. Who doesn't want to access live information on your 3G phone while on a plane?

onboard avionics as well as terrestrial cellular systems onboard aircraft are not to be interfered with.

Mobile freq range for most mobiles in at 510.MHZ to 560MHZ  although some digital are peeking around the 800 +  this is the issue the broad spectrum of mobile phones and the frequencies are growing daily there is unlike most HF freq are peeking at about 490MHZ.

Recomendations currently are that if they were to operate within a pico cell it would basically restrict the power of devices. Mobile phone 'search ' for earth bound stations and increase power to find them if not within range. Its ok for one phone but you are talking 200+ ppl on the plane.

Granted not all will be making calls but the signals are 'seraching'for that earth bound station all the time.

Best to err on the side of caution than to risk the outcomes that may develop - reduce the risk we all use it in our daily lives.

But you are putting other lives at risk not just your own - thats the nature of public transport - Fly your own plane use your mobile ifts its only you ( apart from accident victims) that wants to risk your life.

(1  9 volt battery doesnt do a great deal of damage string 200 together make the connection and plz if you survive tell us the outcome)

Anyone else besides me been   peeking at their sparking mobiles?

Oh, and most crashes do happen near the airport -- either landing and taking off, right?

Note to those living near airports: Stop sparking major airline crashes.

sparking ?  - we are not talking about sparking  its about frequency radiation  you know the kind that if you stand undera powerline with a phone and get a distortion -

Thats the interferance we are refering too

Perhaps the loved ones of the heroes on Flight 93 (also on 9/11) are thankful cells were used.  But maybe those same calls are what doomed the flight to crash.

Wonder if some good ol' frequency radiation would roll back the price on the bowsa??! Below 99c would be nice. Maybe that's why they ban cells at the servo, too.

i don't fly, i hate heights! wouldn't get me in a plane. but if they affect the planes equipment like in a hospital or doctors surgery then perhaps they shouldn't be used unless it is an emergency.
