New species found in Lost World
Article from: The Courier-Mail
December 18, 2007 07:16am

RESEARCHERS in a remote jungle in Indonesia have discovered a giant rat - five times the size of a typical city rat - and a tiny possum that are apparently new to science.
Unearthing new species of mammals in the 21st century is very rare. The discoveries by a team of American and Indonesian scientists are being studied further to confirm their status.

The animals were found in the Foja mountains rainforest in eastern Papua province in a June expedition, said US-based Conservation International, which organised the trip along with the Indonesian Institute of Science.

"The giant rat is about five times the size of a typical city rat," said Kristofer Helgen, a scientist with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

"With no fear of humans, it apparently came into the camp several times during the trip."

The possum was described as "one of the world's smallest marsupials".

A 2006 expedition to the same stretch of jungle - dubbed by Conservation International as a "Lost World" because until then humans had rarely visited it - unearthed scores of exotic new species of palms, butterflies and palms.

Papua has some of the world's largest tracts of rainforest, but like elsewhere in Indonesia they are being ravaged by illegal logging.

Scientists said last year that the Foja area was not under immediate threat, largely because it was so remote.

Re the house that exploded due to the drug lab, it was owned by a bikie who died in a shoot out in 1999.  The police arrested a 25 year old in connection with the incident.

Is it still owned by the bikie?. I did not expect a person dead 8 years to be a property owner . . (but the world is turned on its head these days)

Christmas world news...

Woman Accused Of Groping Mall Santa

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) - Santa Claus says that a woman who sat on his lap was naughty, not nice.

A Santa at the Danbury Fair mall said the woman groped him.

"The security officer at the mall said Santa Claus has been sexually assaulted," police Detective Lt. Thomas Michael said of the weekend complaint.

Sandrama Lamy, 33, of Danbury, was charged with sexual assault and breach of peace. She was released on a promise to appear in court on Jan. 3.

Police quickly found and identified Lamy because the woman was described as being on crutches, said Capt. Bob Myles.

A call seeking comment from Lamy was answered by a recording Tuesday morning. A woman later called back and said: "It's a false report and I don't have any idea."

Police did not give the name of the disconcerted Santa, but they said he is 65 and felt badly because children were waiting to see him. "He was apparently shocked and embarrassed by the whole incident," Myles said.

A man who teaches hundreds of prospective Santas a year - "Santa Tim" Connaghan, president of RealSantas.com - said he's never heard of a similar incident, though it's not unusual for adults to want to pose with Santa.

"I've had some very nice ladies sit on my lap," said Connaghan, who did not train the Danbury Fair Santa. "Once in a while they'll say 'I hope Mrs. Claus isn't going to be upset.' You have to be discreet and kind and say 'Oh no, she'll be OK. You can sit here, but only for one photo.'"

A spokeswoman for Cherry Hill Photo, the company that coordinates Santas for Danbury Fair, declined to comment Tuesday.

The whole crime could be cleared up in a minute . . but the dozens of expensive 'Santa Photos' taken are too dear for the police to pay for to see what really happened.

Toddler left in '70 degree heat': kidsafe
Posted 3 hours 44 minutes ago

Kidsafe says a two-year-old girl who died after being left inside a locked car in the Perth suburb of Maddington would have been exposed to temperatures of up to 70 degrees.

The temperature in Perth reached just over 34 degrees yesterday, and Kidsafe Chief Executive Sue Wicks says the temperature in the car would have been much higher.

"Yesterday was probably the first really hot day we've had in quite some time ," she said.

"What happens, when the temperature outside increases, [and] the car is closed up, the temperature inside increases as well. It can be anything up to 30 or 40 degrees [higher] inside the car than outside."

Police says it appears a sibling found the body of the two-year-old girl.

They say it appears the parents returned to their Maddington home yesterday afternoon and left the child in the car before taking another vehicle to pick up their older children in Fremantle.

Police say they realised the child was still in the car when they could not find her in the house.

Inspector Trevor Davis says their attempts to resuscitate the girl failed and she had died by the time paramedics arrived

Were the parents ^^^^^ high, drunk or both? Please, no-one is that stupid, surely I am horrified by this story/event. For two people to forget where their baby is, is unbelievable. What is wrong with people? I saw on the news that the parents would not be charged... what the? There are more questions than answers IMHO!

We are left now pondering the idea that the parents are related to a Judge or Police family. ???   . .or worse . . a prosecutor who thinks everything bad is a 'childish experimentation'.

How the hell could they be so ****ing stupid?! I would be incredibly protective of my children (if I had any). How anybody could be so unforgivably irresponsible is beyond me.

That is totally irresponsible. Everyone knows you gotta leave the window down a little bit while you go play the pokies.

In all seriousness, how pathetic can you get! Sometimes I wonder if we should bring back the "eye for an eye" rule. Forget my ***. *walks off muttering incoherantly*
