I guess there's somebody who sits in the back of the room evaluating a teacher's performance in the classroom.

That happens too, although not from the back of the class.

As a coordinator I have certain staff to line manage and evaluating performance is a part of that role.

No it's not tied to student results, for the simple reason that it would be unfair for those of us teaching in disadvantaged schools.

Pleased to hear that !

Exam results do not necessarily reflect a teachers ability and hard work

Quoted from Paula

It is based on length of tenure:

A beginning teacher (even though they do the same teaching load in most cases) does not get the same amount as a step 8 teacher (the highest 'rank').  For each year of teaching you complete, you go up a step.

Just one more question

Could a teacher who has less ability than another , still move through the
ranks and get the pay increases ?
Up to Step 8 , at least .

Or would their performance appraisal keep them at a lower level ?

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.  She has no idea about anything!

Julie Bishop is a grade A ninkampoop, then again name me one Liberal woman (or man) that isn't? She has no idea about education, she's a toff that has no grip on reality.

It's a shame that in a time when we need intelligent women leading the way, the Liberals (purposely) promote ninkampoops.

It is based on length of tenure:

A beginning teacher (even though they do the same teaching load in most cases) does not get the same amount as a step 8 teacher (the highest 'rank').  For each year of teaching you complete, you go up a step. If you are a permanent teacher this will take about 5 + years; if a contract teacher (living on term to term or less contracts) it can take much longer.

It is also based on skills and performance:

An AST (Advanced Skills Teacher) gets more than a step 8 teacher.  He/she will have a variety of extra skills and knowledge and will have to go through a process before a panel of peers to prove this.  There are also levels of ASTs, but I am not sure how many.

A key teacher also gets more than a step 8 teacher and usually takes on part of the role of a coordinator (which is the next step again).  Once again this is based on performance and skills.

So is this only in SA or is it statewide? It sounds fair to me, although I understand teachers should be paid more because it is such a tough and valuable job. Bishop's plans are ludicrous. One of her great brainwave ideas was to have the students grade their teachers which would contribute to the teacher's appraisals. Fantastic, I imagine the good looking teachers always getting 10/10 even if they were bad, whereas the really good hard-arse teachers would get 1/10. Brilliant Bishop.

Why are the Liberals hell-bent on following America in everything they do when as a society were are far better than America.

Yes, they can and no, they won't be kept at a lower level with respect to the above.  That's linked to tenure rather than performance.  It would, however, be unlikely that they'd move any further up the "ladder".  That being said, I am sure it has happened.  I occasionally stop and wonder, "how the heck did you get to where you are?" Certainly the system is not foolproof, but it's a helluva lot fairer than what Ms Bishop proposes.  IMO of course.

Fireballs as factory erupts
STAFF WRITERS
April 16, 2007 02:20pm

A HUGE fire has ripped through a southern suburbs paint factory, causing several explosions and spectacular fireballs and forcing the evacuation of nearby buildings.

The blaze, which is now under control, broke out  just before 1pm at Astec Paints, Pinn St, St Marys.

Large black plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from kilometres away and several nearby buildings were evacuated. At least two explosions were heard as fireballs erupted.

MFS spokesman John Foody said one worker received minor burns to his face and arm and had been taken to Flinders Medical Centre. His condition was not life threatening.

All other staff had been accounted for.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.

Driver escapes truck rollover
JOANNA VAUGHAN
April 16, 2007 11:45am

A TRUCK driver was lucky to escape with just minor injuries after his vehicle flipped on its side, squashing the cabin roof, at a shopping centre this morning.

The man had to climb down a ladder to get out of the cabin, following accident at Burnside Village Shopping Centre, Glenside, about 7.30am.

It is believed the man, who was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, had been driving down a dirt slope on a construction site, when the truck rolled.

The second stage of construction work at the Burnside Village Shopping Centre is currently under way to build a multi-storey carpark on the corner of Portrush Rd and Cator St.

The incident will be investigated by SafeWork SA.

Money on Princess Kylie
April 15, 2007 10:00pm

UK bookmakers reckon Kylie Minogue and Paris Hilton are among the frontrunners to be Prince William's bride now he has split with girlfriend Kate Middleton.

Bookmakers William Hill were offering 6-1 that the 24-year-old prince, second in line to the throne, would marry a female fellow army officer.

However a host of celebrities were not far behind.

William Hill offered 8-1 on dippy socialite and family friend Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, and 14-1 on Kylie Minogue and US party girl Paris Hilton, the hotel chain heiress.

Singer Britney Spears -- who he was reported to have been exchanging emails with in 2002 -- was priced at 20-1, British topless model Keeley Hazell was 22-1 and Russian tennis beauty Maria Sharapova was 33-1.

Other potential queens quoted included US singer Kelly Osbourne and Sir Paul McCartney's estranged wife Heather Mills, both at 100-1.

A same-sex civil ceremony was also a 100-1 shot.

William's brother Prince Harry, 22, was tipped to beat him to getting down on one knee. William Hill said Harry was 1-2 to get engaged first while William was 6-4.

They offered odds of 2-1 that William would get engaged between 28 and 30, 10-1 that he would still be unmarried at 35 and 20-1 that he would become king as a single man.

Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence.

wtf?!

Who in their right mind would seriously think that a bloody PRINCE would hook up with megas**t Hilton? And as for Kylie, why would they go out with a woman that's old enough to be their mother? There are far more graceful women her age that are worthy of a young bloke's attention. After all, a lot of blokes fantasize about being with a mature, older woman.

Gunman shoots himself after US campus rampage

A lone gunman has committed suicide after killing 32 people in a rampage at the Virginia Tech university campus in the USA.

"The gunman took his own life. All I can tell you is that he's a male," campus police chief Wendell Flinchum told reporters.

Virginia Tech president Dr Charles Steger confirmed that 33 people, including the gunman, had died in the deadliest shooting rampage on a campus in US history.

Most of those killed were students attending classes at a hall where the gunman apparently used chains to lock doors before shooting the victims, university and police officials said.

Fifteen people were wounded in the shootings, including people who had been shot and some who were hurt after jumping from windows to escape the gunfire.

"We have not confirmed the identity of the gunman because he carried no identification on his person and we are in the process of attempting that identification," Dr Steger said.

The university hosts at least one Australian exchange student but the Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that at this stage there are no reports of Australians being killed or injured.

Two areas attacked

The rampage took place in two separate areas, first at a dormitory as students had begun crisscrossing the sprawling campus for morning classes, and then about two hours later at an engineering and science school almost a kilometre away.

The attacks sparked panic and chaos.

A student journalist's video of the chaos was replayed repeatedly on US television networks.

It showed people scurrying around the campus and more than two dozen shots ringing out.

Students told CNN there were multiple bomb threats to the campus in the last few weeks, with two of the threats aimed at the university's science and engineering school.

The first shooting was reported to campus police at about 7.15am local time in West Ambler Johnston Hall, a dormitory housing some 900 students.

It was followed by more shooting at Norris Hall, site of the science and engineering school that has given the university much of its fame as a leading technical institute in the United States.

During the two hours after the first shooting some students had ventured out again.

University police were investigating the first shooting at the dormitory when they got word of gunfire at the classroom building.

Student Justin Merrifield told Reuters he was outside West Ambler dormitory at 9am (local time) when he saw police and a crying student but did not realise the magnitude of the crisis until he arrived at his 10am class.

Mr Merrifield says students were alerted by campus loudspeakers.

"There was a voice that just kept repeating, 'Gunman on campus, stay indoors, get away from windows,' over and over, basically," Mr Merrifield said.

Australian witnesses

Australian Christopher Hull works at the university and said he heard a series of shots being fired as he hid in his office.

"It was very rapid fire and that stopped and then there was another burst of gunfire," he said.

"I can't remember the exact details of it - it all happened very quickly - it was probably less than 50 metres away. I heard a number of gun shots - probably 15 or 20 and then all of sudden a lot of students came running out of the building.

"Some appeared hurt and then there were more shots and very soon after that heavily armed police turned up."

Mr Hull confirmed that people had thrown themselves out of windows to escape the gunman.

"They jumped out of second-floor windows. I think a couple of them hurt their ankles or broke their ankles," he said.

"One guy was crawling across the grass, another student came back to help him and then later on waves of students came running out holding their hands above their heads, then they started bringing out wounded people."

An Australian exchange student at Virginia Tech told Channel Seven she was lucky to be alive.

Leslie Gerrard, from Gympie in south-east Queensland, was speaking this morning from the campus, which she said had been locked down.

"I have classes actually in Norris Hall where the shootings took place, on Mondays in the afternoon," she said.

"Although this week my classes were online I can totally picture the room where these people would have been. It just hits home how lucky I am that I could have actually been in that situation when that occurred."

University criticised

One student criticised how university officials reacted.

"I'm pretty outraged that someone died in a shooting in a dorm at 7 o'clock in the morning and the first email about it had no mention of locking down the campus, no mention of canceling classes," Jason Piatt told CNN.

"They just mentioned that they were investigating a shooting," he said. "That's pretty ridiculous. Meanwhile, while they sent out that e-mail, 21 people got killed."

Dr Steger, facing a barrage of questions over the university's initial response, stressed that its efforts to alert students could not possibly reach the thousands of people moving around the campus at the start of the school day.

"We had no reason to suspect any other incident was going to occur," Dr Steger said of the first shooting.

Classes have been cancelled for Monday and Tuesday and counsellors are being brought in to talk to the students.

Condolences from Bush

US President George W Bush lamented the loss of life at the university, some 425 kilometres south-west of Washington.

"Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary and learning," Mr Bush reporters.

"When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom and every American community. Today our nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones at Virginia Tech."

The death toll was worse than a massacre at the University of Texas in Austin on August 1, 1966, when Charles Whitman, a 25-year-old student, killed 13 people and wounded 31 in a 90-minute spree.

Thirty-five people lost their lives when a gunman went on the rampage at Port Arthur in Tasmania in 1996.

You don't need a permit in Virginia to own a gun and there is no waiting period. The NRA is very strong there and this is the same NRA that wants to free up our gun laws.
