A Granny, wow, I'd love to be a granny. My mother was one at around 40 having had my eldest daughter at age 19. She's well and truly a great granny now at 80 and her mother is nearly 100 and a great great grandmother well and truly. My grandchildren are my daughter's cats and rats. What do you want to known as blahnii? Grandma, granny, nanna...?
Todays news.... A learner driver, a bus stop, mayhem Jano Gibson March 28, 2007 MAJDA DESOVSKI was pushing her five-month-old son, Stefan, in a stroller along Kogarah's busy Railway Parade when she saw an out-of-control car veer towards her.
Instinctively, she tried to throw the stroller - with Stefan in it - out of harm's way as the car clipped the kerb, flattened two bus stop signs and ploughed through a queue of people.
By the time the red Toyota Echo screeched to a halt about 15 metres away, almost a dozen people lay crying and bleeding among a sea of debris, which included the yellow learner plates of the 42-year-old female driver, who stood screaming hysterically in the street.
A 20-year-old woman from Orange, who suffered severe head and chest injuries, later died at St George Hospital. The driver, under police guard, was being treated at the same hospital for shock. Ms Desovski's 18-month-old nephew, Marco, who had been holding his mother's hand when the car struck, was in a critical but stable condition.
A further nine people were injured. They suffered head wounds, fractures and cuts.
"I just saw my child was all right and my sister was good but my sister's child was really badly injured so I grabbed him and just ran to the hospital," Ms Desovski said.
Her brother, Illiya Jokic, rushed from Wollongong with his mother after hearing the news of the crash.
"Majda saw the car coming and then, quick reflexes, she threw her own son's pram away with him in it," he said.
"The car came through the area and [Majda] blacked out. She saw her sister's son [lying] on the ground. He was bleeding. She picked him up and pretty much ran to this emergency ward here."
She ran there with Rob Mitreski, 41, of Rockdale, who was on his way to the dentist when he witnessed the accident shortly after 11am yesterday.
"[The car] hit the gutter in front of the paper shop and then wiped out two females, which I believe were sisters, a … baby in one pram and her sister had an 18-month-old son holding his hand," Mr Mitreski said.
A Ukrainian coach has been stripped of his accreditation for the FINA world swimming championships after being caught on camera physically assaulting his daughter - a world championships competitior.
Victorian Police have reviewed footage captured by host broadcasters the Nine Network, which clearly showed a physical altercation between the two, with both attempting to strike each other. They have not laid any charges against the 38-year-old man.
Inspector Rick Nugent of Victoria Police said the woman was well and was being interviewed by investigators. ''It was distressing vision,'' he told reporters.
"The concerns of Victoria Police were very much for the welfare of the female athlete,'' he said.
Man charged with grooming US boy David Braithwaite March 28, 2007 - 6:47AM
A 51-year-old man has been charged with grooming a teenage boy in the US for sex after allegedly sending him explicit photographs and messages over the internet.
Child pornography was found among computers, DVDs, movie reels and documents siezed from the man's home in Orange, in central-west NSW, yesterday, police say.
Guns and ammunition were also seized during the morning raid on the Edward Street house by detectives from the police Child Exploitation Internet Unit and local officers.
The man was charged with using a carriage service to groom a child (under 16) for sex, using a carriage service to transmit child pornography and possessing child pornography.
Examination of the items found at the house are continuing and more charges are expected, police say.
The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Orange Local Court on May 1.
Inquiries are continuing and more charges are expected, police say.
The next story stinks.... 'Sewage tsunami' kills four in Gaza March 28, 2007 - 5:57AM At least four Palestinians drowned in a "sewage tsunami" when a water treatment reservoir burst, flooding a village in the northern Gaza Strip.
The deluge, triggered by the collapse of a septic system aid organisations had long warned was dangerously overburdened, submerged dozens of homes in the Bedouin farming village of Umm al-Nasr beneath a cesspool of foul-smelling effluent.
Two adults and two toddlers died in the flood.
At least 15 people were injured and scores more were still missing, according to Palestinian medics.
Village children clung to wooden doors floating on the putrid waters and rescuers paddled through the village in makeshift boats in search of victims.
Frantic goats and cows were also pulled to safety.
Village mayor Ziad Abu Thabet said 70 per cent of the village's mostly ramshackle homes had been buried in raw sewage.
"The situation is very bad," the mayor said.
By late afternoon, receding flood waters had left a stinking scum that further hampered rescue efforts.
Palestinian television proclaimed a "sewage tsunami" had rocked Gaza.
An adviser to president Mahmud Abbas declared the village a disaster area.
Newly appointed interior minister Hani al-Qawasmeh rushed to the scene to inspect the damage, but angry villagers chased him off.
They opened fire on his convoy and wounded two policemen, witnesses said.
In Israel, defence minister Amir Peretz ordered the army to provide assistance to the victims if asked to do so by the Palestinian Authority.
The Hamas movement, the leading partner in a newly formed Palestinian unity government, blamed the disaster on a foreign aid boycott slapped on the Palestinian Authority a year ago when the Islamist hardliners first came to power.
Israel and the West consider Hamas a terrorist outfit.
"The overflowing of the basin is one of the results of the suspension of international aid to our people, which is preventing the government from improving and developing infrastructure," Hamas said in a statement.
As far back as January 2004, UN aid agencies in the Gaza Strip had warned that the north Gaza sewage treatment facility was operating far beyond its capacity and posed a grave danger to nearby residents.
Designed to serve just 50,000 people, the plant at that time was handling waste from 190,000 Gaza residents.
Excess sewage had already flooded around 110 acres, and 50 per cent of children in Umm Al-Nasr had developed problems with their digestive systems, a UN report found.
"Unless action is taken to address this problem, water in this effluent lake will spill out over the holding basins into residential areas, and directly into homes," the report concluded.

A court has issued an intervention order against a Ukrainian swimming coach after he was filmed having a physical altercation with his daughter before her World Championships swimming heat last night.
The order prevents Mikhail Zubkov, 38, from going within 200m of his daughter, swimmer Kateryna Zubkova, 18, or making contact with her by telephone.
Despite last night's drama, Miss Zubkova won her 50m backstroke heat this morning, which should see her advance to the final. She did not speak to media after her event.
Victoria Police sought the order, which was granted in an out of sessions court, late last night.
The court bailed Mr Zubkov on his own undertaking to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.
Superintendent Mick Williams said police were made aware of the incident after footage of the altercation after it was broadcast on television.
He said police took the pair into custody last night. Both made statements, which prompted police to seek the order.
"She was quite open and frank and didn't hold back about what the incident was about," Superintendent Williams said.
He said police would continue investigating the incident and decide whether any charges would be laid.
"The images are disturbing and certainly warranted further investigation.
"Police held concerns for the safety of the victim.
"The Victoria Police has a strong no-tolerence approach to domestic violence," he said.
Skating champ saves Olympian mum's life Thursday Mar 29 15:55 AEST
Australian ice skating champion Sean Carlow saved the life of his mother, Olympian Liz Cain, when she blacked out after her leg was severed in a Sydney Harbour ferry crash.
Ms Cain lost part of her left leg and was flung into the harbour when her husband's 10-metre motor cruiser and a Sydney Ferries HarbourCat collided under Sydney Harbour Bridge just before 11pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
A family friend, lawyer John Foley, said Ms Cain passed out when she saw her injured leg and would have drowned had it not been for her quick-acting son.
"It appears that her left foot from about half way down the shin was severed from the impact ... and lost - it went down with the boat," Mr Foley told AAP.
"She saw that her left leg was severed half way down that shin and she blacked out and was floating in the harbour.
"Sean spotted her and grabbed her and rescued her."
The 22-year-old senior men's figure skating national champion had been on the boat with his mother and her husband Peter Lynch, as well as his 80-year-old grandmother Eve Cain and his stepbrother, five-year-old Orion Lynch.
There were seven other passengers on the boat at the time of the incident, all of whom are linked to the ice skating fraternity.
Mr Carlow, his grandmother and Mr Lynch escaped serious injury, and Mr Lynch's young son was the only person on the boat to emerge unscathed.
"The Lynchs are devastated, this came right out of the blue," Mr Foley said.
"They were going up the harbour and right without any warning this ferry came up behind them.
"The first thing they heard was the crash - then it was physically on top of them.
"It appears to have hit them about midships going towards the stern (rear).
"As I understand it, the people who died in the accident were actually standing on the stern out the back of the boat.
"Peter's young child, young Orion ... was asleep in the forward cabin and he was the only person on board with absolutely no injuries."
Three dead, young girl missing after ferry crash Thursday Mar 29 11:00 AEST By ninemsn staff
Three people are dead and a young girl is missing after a ferry crash underneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge last night.
A Harbour Cat slammed into a 34-foot wooden cruiser at 10.50pm, causing the private vessel to capsize and spill its 12 passengers — most from the same family — into the water. A massive search operation — including a Lifesaver helicopter, police divers and a naval boat — continues in the harbour for a 14-year-old girl, believed to be Morgan Innes of Brisbane, who is still missing. A 47-year-old Warriewood man, a 45-year-old Frenchs Forest man and a 44-year-old Bondi woman died at the scene. Two of those killed were Sydney anaesthetist Dr Alan Blinn and Simone Moore.
Crash boat was 'lit up like a Christmas tree' David Braithwaite March 31, 2007
THE boat destroyed in Wednesday night's ferry crash was not in darkness, but "lit up like a Christmas tree" with navigation and galley lights blazing, a friend of its owner says.
John Foley, a spokesman for the Lynch family, hosts of the pleasure cruise on which three people died and one is missing, said its owner-skipper, Peter Lynch, and his stepson, Sean Carlow, were adamant it was under navigation lights.
Witnesses have speculated that the Merinda, a 10-metre wooden motor cruiser, did not have its lights on when it was hit by the HarbourCat Pam Burridge about 10.45pm near the Harbour Bridge.
The Merinda, part-owned by Mr Lynch, was carrying delegates to a seminar by the US Olympic ice skating coach Kathy Casey at Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink. One of the passengers, 14-year-old Morgan Innes, is still missing.
Mr Foley, a barrister, said Mr Lynch and Mr Carlow had described to him "in great detail how they've put the lights on initially and each separately checked they were on … they have no doubts in the world that they were on."
Mr Foley said three people - Mr Lynch's wife and Sean Carlow's mother, the former Olympian Liz Cain, who lost part of her leg in the crash - had been drinking coffee in the galley, which they would not have done in the dark. "The important thing is those three ladies were having coffee and bickies after dinner with the lights on," he said.
Mr Foley said the group set off at 7pm from Drummoyne, where Mr Lynch lives. "They went around to Darling Harbour, switched off the [navigation] lights and had dinner on the boat. Then they fired the boat up and thought they'd putter around to Woolloomooloo to show the overseas guests Russell Crowe's house … both [Mr Lynch and Mr Carlow] checked that the switches and lights were on."
As they headed beneath the bridge, they were unaware they were on a collision course with the Pam Burridge, which was sailing to its overnight berth.
This may not exactly be 'todays news' but... on Seven's National (?) News coming from Brisbane two nights ago there was a story on Peter Beattie's 13 day trade trip overseas specifically his trip to London to speak with those in charge of recycled water. Apparently, according to the water authority in London.... it does NOT recycle water for human consumption especially effluent! I have heard and read many times that they did and do BUT they adamantly denied doing any such thing. Suffolk and Essex shires on the other hand happily admit to recycling their water to great benefit of the region. Peter Beattie was a bit gob smacked at the London denial to recycling water. He too had been 'missled'.
Mob bruise man's brain in wild attack April 2, 2007 - 7:00AM A man has been hospitalised with bruising to the brain after being set upon by a group of about eight men in Sydney's inner-west overnight, police say.
The man, 23, and his companion, also 23, were walking on Brisbane Street at about 1.15am (AEST) when they were approached by a group of about eight men, police said today.
The man was allegedly punched in the head and fell to the ground unconscious, police said. His companion went to his aid and was also set upon by the men.
The first victim was taken to St Vincents Hospital with bruising to the brain. He is in a serious but stable condition.
Two 17-year-old youths were arrested over the incident about 4am (AEST) in Hyde Park, but were later released pending further inquiries.
Police believe a group of males, described as being of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean appearance, may assist with inquiries.
Detectives are continuing their inquiries and anyone with information about the incident should contact Surry Hills Local Area Command on 9265 4144 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. AAP

Paedophile targets cafe April 2, 2007
IT WAS a winter's Saturday, and the 12-year-old boy was engaged in one of his favourite pastimes - spending 11 hours at an internet cafe playing games online, and chatting on MSN Messenger.
A District Court jury was told the boy was approached by a man who had been looking at "rude" internet sites. The prosecutor, David Jordan, said the man asked the boy to add him to his email list, and during computer conversations "Dan" offered the boy $10 if he could play with the boy's "doodle". The man also suggested they could go to his house, or to a nearby toilet at a station in southern Sydney.
The accused, Darren John Tector, denied he was "Dan", but last month he was found guilty on charges of using a carriage service to procure a person aged under 16 for sexual activity.
The jury was told how the boy's mother and the police set about flushing "Dan" out, which resulted in the arrest of Tector after a police officer posed as the boy and engaged in an online conversation with "Dan".
Both conversations were visible on the screen when police found him at an internet cafe.
Well actually it is yesterday's news and maybe I should post it under Weird, wonderful, awful News Headlines and Stories but anyway, here 'tis. The Solomon Islands yesterday were rocked by an earthquake. The East Coast of Australia was put on Tsunami alert. Children were taken home from school by concerned parents and some schools even closed. In a nutshell, I live about 2 meters above sea level and near a tidal canal and the Maroochy River on the Sunshine Coast and I was oblivious of any percieved 'threat' to low lying areas. Not until I was watching last night's news (local and national) did I realise there was concern and even panic that a tsunami may hit low lying coastal areas. I had watched the early morning news and was under the impression that Cooktown and other Northern Cities were the only areas of concern. The Tsunami Early Warning System obviously did not work for me or other's in my neighbourhood.
This is an excerpt from a story in the Sydney Morning Herald today.
The tsunami, generated by a huge undersea earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale, created shockwaves across the Pacific, closing beaches along the east coast of Australia and stopping ferry services in Sydney, even sending a 10-centimetre wave into Port Kembla.
Amid confusion and claims of overreaction in Australia, the Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, said he had been frustrated at a lack of information. "This was frightening in a sense that we were warned there could've been a tsunami, we were trying to work out the magnitude of it but we were shooting blind, and I don't believe this is good enough."
Big splash from wave that wasn't Linton Besser, Erik Jensen and Richard Macey April 3, 2007
THOUSANDS of tourists were hauled off beaches, ferry services were suspended and a Manly school was evacuated - all for what the Mayor of Waverley has dubbed the "tsunami that wasn't".
George Newhouse's words spoke volumes for Sydney's bewildered residents and visitors yesterday as they listened to regular announcements that the city was in tsunami lockdown.
But authorities insist their response was not overkill.
The warnings came after an earthquake hit the Solomon Islands at 6.40am yesterday, and a decision was made in Melbourne to put Australia's east coast on alert.
The sea level rises recorded along the NSW coast would later measure just 10 centimetres, but the Bureau of Meteorology stands by its decision to issue an official threat bulletin about 8am yesterday to Queensland, NSW and Tasmania. In NSW, the bulletin advised people to evacuate beaches, secure vessels and move to higher ground, as the state's tsunami emergency plan was put into action for the first time since it was drafted in late 2005.
Maced, wrestled and arrested April 3, 2007 - 8:18PM
The reigning Mr Universe was sprayed with Mace and wrestled to the ground by Californian police officers, believing he was intoxicated when the diabetic bodybuilder was actually going through insulin shock.
Doug Burns was anyway arrested for misdemeanour assault and resisting arrest for the incident at a downtown movie theatre in Redwood City, California, on Sunday night.
Police Captain Chris Cessina said officers reported that Burns, 43, had assumed a fighting stance and it took four officers to bring him into submission.
"The fact is Mr Burns assaulted our officer," Cessina told the San Mateo Daily Journal.
"If he had just stood there and let us help him, maybe they would have called the medics if he didn't seem to fit the description of being under the influence."
Burns, who was trying a new diabetes drug on that night, said he was preparing to see a film when he felt dizziness and poor vision - a sign of low blood sugar - and hurried to a snack counter.
A security guard noticed Burns' strange behaviour and asked him to leave, thinking he was intoxicated, Cessina said. When he refused, the guard called police.
When officers arrived, Burns allegedly lunged at one of them, pushing him to the ground with both hands, and took a fighting stance. Burns continued being combative until four officers wrestled him down, Cessina said.
During the scuffle, the officers did not notice Burns' Medic Alert bracelet. An on-scene medical test later confirmed that Burns had low blood sugar during the incident.
Being diabetic I know exactly how it feels to be in insulin shock (I call it a hypo which means low blood sugar). When I was first diagnosed some 8 years ago I often had hypo's when my meds were being adjusted to suit me. I always carry glucose tablets that I can suck if in that situation. If I was out shopping and could feel one coming on I would find a seat, sit down and find a glucose tablet and suck it. I could feel an attack coming on when my lower legs felt cold and sweaty, then it travelled up my body. People would look at me as though I was drunk, which is exactly how I felt at the time. There is a lack of oxygen going to the brain when you have a hypo and that is NOT a good thing.
This next story should probably go into the Weird, wonderful etc thread but I just couldn't be bothered
Excrement pile saves Chinese woman after balcony fall April 4, 2007
A Chinese woman survived a fall from a sixth-floor balcony after she landed on a large pile of excrement dug up by workers clearing a septic tank, state media said.
The unnamed woman was stretching to hang washing when she lost her balance and fell from the balcony at her home in the southern city of Nanjing yesterday, the semi-official China News Service quoted a local newspaper as saying.
The woman suffered only minor injuries after the 20cm heap cushioned her fall, the agency said.
Workers had been dredging the tank after complaints by local residents, it said.
DNA clears man after 22 years in US jail Tuesday Apr 3 10:29 AEST
AP - A schizophrenic who spent 22 years in prison for rape and was denied parole five times has been cleared after DNA evidence linked the crimes to another man.
A judge in Buffalo, New York, threw out Anthony Capozzi's two 1987 rape convictions at a hearing and Capozzi, 50, is expected to be freed later this week.
"There is a big load lifted off," said his lawyer, Thomas D'Agostino.
Capozzi was not in court for the hearing. He has been transferred to a psychiatric centre while authorities arrange for his release.
"I truly regret that this had to happen," District Attorney Frank Clark said.
"Everybody trying to do the right thing and going through all the right steps and coming out with the wrong result.
"I think a simple I'm sorry would never be enough," the prosecutor said.
D'Agostino has said he is prepared to sue the state for wrongful imprisonment to ensure Capozzi's future care.
Capozzi was found guilty of the rapes February 6, 1987, and sentenced to 11 to 35 years.
He was denied parole five times since becoming eligible in 1997, because his refusal to admit the crimes made it impossible to complete a mandatory sex offender program, said another of his lawyers, Norman Effman.
Though his lawyer and family have never doubted Capozzi's innocence, it was the recent arrest of a suspect in a 25-year string of rapes and murders that ultimately proved them right.
Altemio Sanchez, 49, was arrested January 15 after DNA evidence identified him as a serial criminal known as the Bike Path Rapist.
After linking Sanchez to three murders and several rapes in parks and other secluded areas dating to 1981, investigators began to question whether the 1983 and 1984 attacks for which Capozzi was convicted - which occurred in the same park as two of the rapes linked to Sanchez - might also have been committed by the Bike Path Rapist.
DNA evidence collected after the rapes proved the hunch correct, said Clark, who last week announced the DNA matched that of Sanchez.
"I'm just happy for the Capozzi family, really happy," Buffalo Police Detective Dennis Delano said on his way out of the hearing.
He was among investigators who became convinced of Capozzi's innocence.
The Capozzi family did not attend the hearing.
Capozzi physically resembled Sanchez at the time of the rapes and had been convicted largely because the victims identified him in two police line-ups.
Clark said both victims have been told Capozzi was exonerated.
"That's very difficult for them, because I'm sure that they believed in their hearts and their souls that they were doing the right thing," he said, "and it didn't serve their interest to have somebody who wasn't guilty to serve the time, either".
"I feel sorry for them, too," Clark said.
"In a very real sense they've been victimised twice."
Sanchez is charged with murdering two women in the early 1990s and one woman last northern autumn. He has pleaded innocent.
He is not charged in any of the rape cases because the five-year statute of limitations has expired.
Now would you rather die or be cover in the brown stuff??

I would ask anyone who is opposed to stem-cell techologies to please put your religious convictions aside and think of the millions of people it can help. They could be a family member of yours.
It's ok to personally oppose it, but to prevent those who need it from benefitting from it is not right.

Stem cells take growth of heart tissue a step closer Christian Catalano April 3, 2007
BRITISH scientists have grown a key part of a human heart using adult stem cells — a discovery that could allow patients with faulty heart valves to receive new tissue implants.
Using stem cells extracted from a patient's bone marrow, a team from the Heart Science Centre in London was able to grow the same cells that are present in heart valves. By placing these cells onto scaffolding made of collagen protein, the team then grew three-centimetre-wide discs of valve tissue.
If animal trials are successful, team leader Professor Magdi Yacoub said replacement valve tissue could be implanted in heart disease patients within three to five years.
The discovery had brought the goal of growing a human heart much closer, he said. "It is an ambitious project but not impossible. If you want me to guess, I'd say 10 years."
At present, replacement valves are sourced from pigs or human cadavers, though the recipient's body often rejects the foreign tissue.
Metal valves are an alternative, but these cannot perform the complex tasks of real tissue and may need to be replaced.
"The way a living valve functions, it anticipates hemodynamic events and responds and changes its shape and size," Professor Yacoub said.
"It's completely different from an artificial valve, which will just open and shut."
The research is the latest in a number of breakthroughs — many from Australian laboratories — that use stem cells to repair damaged heart tissue.
"Not so long ago we thought there was no way we could really improve heart disease other than giving someone a new heart," said Professor Sally Dunwoodie, from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney.
"This sort of research gives us hope that damaged components … might be established in the laboratory and transplanted."
Scientists at the institute recently conducted a stem cell trial on patients who were ineligible for a transplant because their heart disease was too far advanced.
The trial involved removing the patients' adult stem cells, culturing them and then re-injecting them directly into the heart to repair the damaged muscle tissue. Though results were still being collected, Professor Dunwoodie said several patients had shown signs of improved cardiac function.
Melbourne-based stem cell company Mesoblast is also part of trials in the US that use a unique type of adult stem cell to create blood vessels and regenerate heart muscle after a heart attack.
"The particular advantage of these cells that we use is that they do not activate the immune system," the company's chief scientific adviser, Professor Silviu Itescu, said.
I totally and absolutely agree with Stem Cell research and use. As do I agree with Cord blood usage and organ donations and transplant operations. Religious reasons my a**. I once wrestled with organ donations because of my newness to christianity at the time. I asked my wonderful pastor (some 22 years ago now) about it and he said it's an individual choice and everyone has to decide for themselves. I realised upon deep reflection that if the 'great creator' had not wanted man to have the knowledge of surgery etc then there would be no-one capable of doing transplants BUT 'man' does have the knowledge and know how and I believe completely that this knowledge and ability are for the good of the World. My faith and beliefs have become broader and more ecclectic in these past 3 years or so but I still fully believe that all this knowledge and scientific progress is to be used as it is of great benefit to mankind.
I am still an organ donor but when I was diagnosed with diabetes 8 years ago I was shattered thinking I would not be able to donate my organs but apparently as long as they are viable I can. I wish when I was young that I had donated some of my eggs, like in my 20's. Cord blood is precious and with all the babies born every day in hospitals around Australia, how much of it is just tossed away and incinerated?
I agree that the benefits of stem cell research could be astronomical, however (and I'm going to get all "sci-fi" here cause it's something that's been portrayed over and over and over) if the gloves come off on this field of research it's only a matter of time before some nutty professor develops a way to increase an embryos intelligence, strength, senses, etc. So the debate against it is not just religious. You could end the religious debate by saying if their was a god why does he allow for peoples organs to fail ultimately leaving many to die in agony?
