I remember there was talk of the possibility of a fourth commercial television network in Australia a few years ago. I personally think that it would be great. The more competition there is, the more that we, the viewers win. Some disagree, saying that there is not enough advertising money, but I think that it could work.

I totally agree Australia needs another commercial TV network (and possibly two new networks over a period of time). There is a desperate need for something new and more competition.

No, we just need networks (like TEN) to air some half intelligent stuff!

We would just end up with more American crap on our TV's. The benifit of having only three commercial networks is that we only normally see the best of the American stuff, not all of it. Plus, imagine having four things on in the same timeslot that you like, it would suck.

Less chance of 10 doing that than the other channels I think

We would see more of everything and at least we wouldn't have to wait as long to watch our favourite shows, or have to record them because they are on at a stupid time. Four things on at once, that would heaven.

We are also missing out still on some great shows that air in the US that don't air on Australian Free-to-air television, but i wouldn't say more than 4 @ the moment because then that statement might come true.

Yes Australian TV has a lot of 'quality' shows on TV at the moment  - Quizmania, Home & Away, Neighbours, 20 to 1, Magdas Funny Bits - the list is endless... plus I'd rather have four programs on at the same time that I like than four crap programs.

Hell no, if anything we need to get rid of one... I say ch7 since they are incapable of broadcasting in HD.

Why does it matter so much? Sure in a few years it will be essential, but now I think that most of the population couldn't care.

I think it would be good to have another one. The whole industry needs more competition. I might have said this in another post, but the Government could give the license to someone who would endeavour to produce quality local programming, maybe with special conditions like spending a certain amount on scripted drama.

Despite what the networks might say, I think the market is large enough to support another one. Sure it will cut into their profits, but it won't destroy the industry. Australian networks have comparatively high profits. Anyway, if one of them can't keep up with the competition, so be it.

Yes. I don't watch ch9 because I think most of their shows are boring and all the same. I hate ch10. ch7 is the only channel I like.

I hope my signature isn't too big. I will change it and make it smaller on Monday.

I've been hearing some talk about Rupert Murdoch buying Nine or TEN. I sort of hope he does. At least he might have the vision to do some more quality programming, and he has the money to back it up.

What they need to do is all co-operate (all the networks), open up another channel that airs only 'reality' tv. Get all that crap off the other channels and get actual real tv back.

Multichanneling would be a better option IMO. I would love to see a ABC2-style channel for the commercial stations, so we can forget about daytime TV and watch primetime shows during the day.

we do need a FTA sports channel as sports take up too much time on the comercial networks already, it would be great idea to have a channel dedicated to the airing of sports

The Internet is going to kill pay-TV stone_cold_dead.

Foxtel thought they had the rights to the US open tennis, little did they know that we were watching it free , they are a truly pitiful excuse.

Since getting adsl2+ and P2P streaming internet which gives me easily 1000 TV channels, I have hardly looked at free to air. This technology will [in time] allow anyone to receive virtually any TV channel from anywhere.

Considering how much CRAP we have on current primetime FTA, I can't imagine how another commercial network would make a difference. There's almost nothing worth watching on TV these days...

Perth recently lost its ACCESS 31 channel. Though I wouldn't have watched alot on it, it was nice to have and I wish it was coming back. I think there have been rumours so far that it might.

Australian commercial television should be ashamed of itself. It continues to dish up shovels full of  American cultural rubbish and at the same time through lack of invedstment, buries what's left of an Australian film and television industry. Lookout 7,9 and 10...your surveys might show the televisions of Australia are switched on...but is anyone really watching them anymore? And a fourth commercial network?,,,No Thanks!...How about a well funded public television network instead?

I just voted a big NO, I agree with previous post, what we need is another public funded network, similar to the ABC.
I personally never watch the commercial networks, only ABC and SBS.
