Ok, first of all this is not a thread for noting which one you prefer, which one you hate, etc.....and yes, there's lots of other animated shows I have missed (including manga) but get over it!

This is a thread for discussion of animated series in general.

I love all these shows and find them really funny - either with their outright shock/rude humor or their more layered comedy style.

Its interesting how over the last few years these shows has become so popular and fairly mainstream and how they generally are all dysfunctional families or fairly outrageous.

I guess because they are animated they can get away with a lot more. Imagine a live version of quads and the outcry that would cause!

I wonder how long some of them will go on - e.g. the Simpsons is getting on now and as noted in the Simpsons thread doesn't quite have the 'kick' it used to.

Also, wonder what the next big animated series will be....

I loathe Family Guy and American Dad, can't stand South Park, don't care about Striparella and love Futurama, The Simpsons and Dilbert (I'm hooked to the Daily Dilbert)

I think South Park is the most topical. You can always count on Matt and Trey to incoporate the latest news headlines/current events into an episode - I love the parodies.

And you're right, there is absolutely no way that half the content in these cartoons would be allowed on a real TV show. That's why I love animation

You missed a few classics, but I can't blame you because of the current crop of good animation.

Ren & Stimpy
Just this week got my hands on the Ren & Stimpy The Lost Episodes (includes the often spoken about Adult Party show from 2003) DVD and I have to say it was well worth waiting 15 years for John K and Spumco to do their stuff with these episodes, titles such as: Naked Beach Frenzy, Fire Dogs 2, Stimpy's Pregnant and Ren Seeks Help. I have to say, this disc is definetely NOT for kids, there is some really, really screwed up stuff in the episodes. Even though there is only 6 episodes on this ser, it's prefect because each and every episode is introduced by John K who gives an overview of how each episode came to be and after the episode there is a discussion with various members of the Spumco team - Eddie Fitzgerald, Vincent Waller, Eric Bauza (new voice of Stimpy and does a good job of imitating Billy West's version), Katie Rice and others.
It was a real pleasure watching the discs because after the let down that was seasons 3, 4 & 5 after Nickelodeon fired Spumco.

Invader Zim
It's a childish, go nowhere series but I honestly love it... Especially when I bought the box set shaped like Zim's house and found out that the roof opens like it does in the cartoon!! Being able to watch the uncompleted 2nd series and the Christmas Special after Nick in Aus never showed it was a real treat...
Many people who are anime fans also like Invader Zim. I am one of those! I can't explain it, but I do!

Neon Genesis Evangelion
This series cannot be compared to the above list of animation, but after I first saw it on SBS I was hooked!!!!
Once a year, I spend a full weekend watching the whole series from start to finish including the movies (I haven't seen the last 2 episodes for more than 4 years because they do not fit into the cronology of the series as the movies are actually the real replacements for the series end, and they really suck compared to the whole series, I can see why fans in Japan were mightily pissed with the end) I have never, ever been so emotionally drained as I was the first time I saw the final movie "End of Evangelion".

Any Warner Brothers Cartoon from 1930 to 1965
Bob Clampett, Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Charles McKinnion - the greatest ever animation directors ever!!!
My favourite is still the Hunting Trilogy - Rabbit Season, Rabbit Fire & Duck - Rabbit - Duck!
Bugs: "That's it Doc, I'm a rabbit allright, Would you like to shoot me now or wait till you get home"
Daffy: "Shoot him now! Shoot him now!"
Bugs: "You keep out of this, he doesn't have to shoot you now"
Daffy: "I say he does have to shoot me now"
BANG!!!

The only series of the list that I haven't or probably won't watch are Quads (I always thought this series was quite strange), Dilbert & King Of The Hill.

I currently watch The Simpsons, Futurama, and King of the Hill (the latter of which I've only ever watched on DVD).

Back in 2000, I used to watch South Park, Family Guy and Dilbert. My favourite would have been South Park back then, purely for the "shock" value. I used to find Dilbert really boring though.

And I've caught a couple of episodes of The Critic. If the DVD set wasn't exclusive to JB-Hi-Fi, I'd probably have bought it by now. :-p

Simpsons all the way! Season 17 was very good. Love American Dad as well just displays the US government / intelligence so well, when I heard America had gone to code red on the radio this morning I just imagined Stan walking around pointing a gun at everyone and searching them
