Federer beats Nadal in Wimbledon final
Monday Jul 10 05:26 AEST

Roger Federer has won his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title, finally subduing Spain's Rafael Nadal 6-0 7-6 6-7 6-3.

It looked as though the world No.1 would run away with an eighth grand slam title after rampaging through the first set in 24 minutes before double French Open champion Nadal recovered to make the Swiss maestro sweat on a breezy Centre Court.

Federer dropped a set for the first time at this year's tournament as the 20-year-old Nadal refused to surrender, but in the end he had enough grasscourt craft to become only the third man to win four straight titles here in the professional era.

"It's fantastic, I never thought it was possible but I made it," Federer, clad in his cream blazer, said in his acceptance speech after an enthralling two hour 50 minute contest.

"It was awfully tight and I was getting awfully nervous in the end."

Federer had been on the receiving end against Nadal four times already this year, and he came out mean, moody and looking for revenge after his French Open final defeat last month.

His opening set demolition was the first 6-0 first set in a Wimbledon men's final since Boris Becker achieved the feat against Stefan Edberg in 1989.

Nadal had won 80 consecutive service games at Wimbledon en route to the final, but that sequence ended when Federer crunched a forehand to break serve at the first time of asking.

For once Nadal, the first Spanish finalist for 40 years, looked overawed as he struggled for rhythm and Federer broke again to lead 4-0.

Nadal saved a set point with a brilliant lob volley at 0-5 and another with his first ace, but Federer made sure at the third attempt with an exquisite backhand pass.

Thoughts of a Centre Court humiliation for Nadal, the youngest men's finalist since Becker in 1986, soon disappeared though as he finally exploded into life.

'ROGER CAN BE THE BEST EVER'
Wimbledon 2006: The Men's Final from the All-England Club
By Alex Spink

ROGER FEDERER can become the greatest tennis player of all time according to beaten finalist Rafael Nadal.

The Spaniard hailed Federer as "unbelievable" after his Wimbledon dream was ended by the four-times champion on Centre Court.

"Congratulations to Roger, he was unbelievable," said Nadal. "I believe he can become the greatest player of all time."

Mauresmo win

It is common for players to sink to their knees after claiming a Wimbledon title, but the imagery was a little more powerful with Mauresmo's win.

With whispers about her mental fragility continuing to cloud her reputation, the Frenchwoman not only came from behind to win on the biggest stage in tennis, but she also beat one of the toughest competitors in the game.

Mauresmo has always been in the spotlight for more reasons than her talent on the court.

Considering the sensitive nature of some of the issues, ranging from nerves to her sexuality, she has been a credit to herself off the court.

The way she has handled the roller coaster ride has made her one of the most popular players on tour and a welcome winner of the biggest trophy in the game.

No matter which way you look at it her Australian Open triumph was cruel. Mauresmo had Justine Henin-Hardenne on toast at Rod Laver Arena in January and, although she had done almost everything to bury her mental demons, the doubts remained.

She still looked nervous, as did Federer on a stage so familiar to him, yet the fact remains it was a triumph of guts and self belief.s a rare feeling for sports fans to be able to relate to their stars so closely yet there were many Mauresmo supporters around the world who felt the same way as her when she sank to court level.

I thought the match between Federer and Nadal would have been a bit closer...but Federer proved too good again. I actually thought Nadal could of beat him. I also thought Justine Henin-Hardenne would of won aswell...but it was a good match anyways..

There was a huge thing about her looks when she started to become famous a few years ago. I dont think its necessary to point out the way she looks, and I feel sorry for her, because its not like something she can control.

But I think most people are over it now, and are focusing more on her ability to play awesome tennis.

Amelie has very big shoulders from which she gets most of her power. People at first thought she was on steroids or it was even rumoured she had a sex change. She is like a lot of good athletes in their prime. Very androgenous looking. Female Swimmers come to mind, broad shouldered and flat chests. Lisa Currie-Kenny had breast implants to make her body look more feminine and make herself feel more womanly. IMHO the most mannish looking women tennis players are the Williams sisters BUT that has no bearing on their tennis prowess. Lindsay Davenport was and still is a great tennis player but was largely ignored because she wasn't perceived 'pretty or attractive'  enough, not like some bimbos that come to mind who were all looks and no talent!

I'm very happy with the winners this year. They both played amazing tennis and deserve their winnings.

Federer is probably the best player to ever grace a tennis court and I hope he will be remembered for how amazing he actually is as a tennis player just like Sampras and Agassi are.

Amelie is a great tennis player also. I would of rather'd to see Martina Hingis get a little further but the final was a very exciting match to watch.

Wow I actually agree with elie!

Federer did deserve the win ,however i would still rank him just below the sublime McEnroe as the best player ever.

I was thrilled to see Amelie win as she along with Hingis(who i was also hoping would go much further)are my favorite female players. Plus like many tennis fans i have a high dislike of the arrogant poor sport JHH. Did you see her face when they shook hands? Sour cow!

And please no comments about Amelies looks, she looks great imho and has  a beautiful spirit. Agree with suzi ,if anything the Williams sisters look much more masculine, but who cares!

I like Justine...I don't think she meant to look sour, she probably just couldnt hide her disappointment well.

I like Martina Hingis too, the comeback kid. But sometimes she can be so blunt..like the way she actually said that Amelie and the Williams sisters were like men.

I didn't like Hingis years back as i was a massive Steffi fan. But since Steffi retired been a huge Hingis fan. I hated it before but now find Hingis's candor refreshing, she speaks her mind and that's cool. And remember those comments well and they were directed at Mauresmo(at the '99 Australian Open)by Hingis and Davenport. Hingis said she was like 'half a man',Davenport said it was like 'playing a man'. They were classless comments that I'm sure both regret. Hingis copped a huge backlash at that years French Open in the final against Graf where she infamously broke down after the macth.
