It is nothing more, nothing less that another form of terrorism to upset the Western World.
Every single one of us will be punished by North Korea when next week we pay 5 cents more for petrol.
This is your reason why the US invade countries. It is not to steal petrol. It is to keep the price of petrol affordable.
It is very well to call the US the baddie and the big bullie.
But don't forget that everyone of us need the stuff as much as the US does. I hate to think how much petrol would cost if the US had never set foot in the Middle East. Probably $10.00 a litre?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding was that the U.S. does NOT get their oil from the Middle East and neither do we. So why then would the price of petrol go up when the supplies being affected are not our sources?
Seems like petrol companies are using any excuse to raise the prices.
In heaven, there are no interesting people - Nietzsche
What the heck does North Korea have to do with oil? What reason does OPEC have to raise prices? Based on the fear of a nuclear war?
At what point does petrol become unaffordable? It's at roughly $1.40 a litre now, I remember the good old days when I was at Uni it was as low as 56 cents a litre, never cost me much more than $30 to fill up my 4 cylinder Toyota T-18!
If the Government wasn't profiting so much from every litre of petrol they might be motivated to do something about it!

Do you believe that petrol prices are ever going to go down again? And the U.S. is in control of Iraq's oil now! Petrol will become unaffordable with increasing demand and the increasing greed of Western Governments, OPEC and oil companies.

Everytime there is a fright of a war starting... It put pressure on the petrol reserves.
Believe it or not, but it does require a lot of petrol to go to war.
Those American bombers don't fly on thin air. And the ground troops don't move on bicycle.

And by the reasons you have given in your last post:

Then petrol would NEVER have gone up in price had the U.S. not set foot in the middle east. So I don't think the U.S. invasion is what's keeping petrol prices down. That's a slightly deluded point of view IMO.
Again, I don't see the logic behind the hysteria that petrol companies seem to adopt everytime the wind blows in the wrong direction and this issue with North Korea, which they're still trying to figure out, does not warrant the price hike that everyone is panicking over.
The belief is that North Korea is just flexing some military muscle and basically showing off. Defying the U.N. like a disobedient child when told, "No, you may NOT do that." and going ahead with it just to be a brat.
I don't think North Korea is silly enough to start a war because every country that owns a long-range missle will have it pointed in their direction. They would probably be obliterated before their missle can reach it's first target.
Having said that, the only image I have of Kim Jong Il is from the movie Team America. heh heh... "I'm so ronery...." Maybe he is and he just wants some attention. Awww... poor fella.

The US does get most of its foreign oil from the M.E. (Saudia Arabia but increasingly Iraq) but it wants to break that dependence. Hence one reason it invaded Iraq (the world's second largest deposits of oil with surveys saying it has the potential for the largest, though Wikipedia says Canada has the second largest). It is also why Bush has repealed an Arctic wilderness park and will allow oil exploration and drilling in a pristine wilderness that will destroy the last great migratory route of the polar bear and wipe out several species in the areas.

United States proven oil reserves declined to a little more than 21 gigabarrels by the end of 2004 according to the Energy Information Administration, a 46% decline from the 39 gigabarrels it had in 1970 when the huge Alaska North Slope reserves were booked. Since there have been millions of oil wells drilled in the US and there is nowhere left for an elephant the size of ANS to remain hidden, it appears that US oil reserves are on a permanent downward slide. As oil fields get closer to the end of production, estimates of what is left characteristically become more accurate. Thus, US oil reserve numbers can be considered very accurate compared those of the Middle East, Alberta and Venezuela.
Yet America remains the largest consumer of oil in the world (and still the biggest polluter).
This puts it into some context:
Quoted Text
The United States, by far the largest consumer of oil, consumed 20.7 million barrels of oil per day in 2004, according to the Energy Information Administration. That's 870 million gallons of crude oil, 435 million of which was used for gasoline. The second-largest consumer, China, consumed 6.5 million barrels per day.
Look how far ahead of the second biggest consumer the US is and there is daylight between the US and the rest of the world. Those who say Iraq wasn't invaded because of its oil certainly have their heads in the sand. As the Washington Post once said if Iraq was the second biggest producer of Broccoli in the world Saddam would still be in power today.
Yes the oil companies are profiteering at every whim but they are doing so knowing they have dwindling reserves and must make hay whilst the sunshines and it us poor consumers who must suffer America's greed and refusal to wean itself off V8 and V10 SUV's (it's their right they will tell you).
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
The Chevvy V10 SUV is the most common but there are Ford Excursion V10s and of course the Volkswagon Tourag V10. All are popular vehicles in the US and hardly anywhere else in the world.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
And we instigated sanctions against the US for developing intercontinental missiles when?
But, but, Dear Friend...
This is not how things work...
We are the good guys...
We have missiles for the sole purpose of preventing the bad guys getting them.
If Germany and Japan did had nuclear weapons in 1942, you think that they would have thought twice about using them? We probably would not be here today talking about it.
All the paranoia about the USA is just that. Paranoia.
Meantime, half of the things we are enjoying everyday comes directly or indirectly from the USA. If Bill Gates had not put a computer in every home, you could not be on this forum. In fact, this forum would not exist. Sure... Someone else would have done it. But the fact of the matter is that they did not. So, lets give a little credit where the credit is due.
Looks like Japan is gearing up for some fisticuffs.
"JAPAN wants the power to stage a pre-emptive strike against weapons bases in North Korea, political leaders in Tokyo said, even as the United States argued that diplomacy could defuse the threat from Pyongyang."

Wait a minute, didn't the USA drop TWO atom bombs on Japan? Who else in this world has used that kind of military power like that? How do you know the USA isn't going to use their nuclear weapons against another country? Paranoia my ar$e.

In a perfect world no-one would have nuclear bombs. We would all hold hands and skip and little furry animals would make our breakfast. (They would be paid. Not slave labour) But didn't dropping those bombs contribute to stopping a world war?
Have they been used since the world realized the destructive power of them?
But didn't dropping those bombs contribute to stopping a world war?
What, killing thousands of innocent civilians? Yeah, I suppose it stopped the war. What other lengths are they prepared to go to in this day and age?

No, we're now waiting for someone to realise the "destructive power" of nuclear weapons. The USA had no qualms about bombing innocent civilians, what's to stop them unleashing a nuclear strike against an "axis of evil" or anyone else?

Yeah... But Japan was the agressor. They declared war on the US by attacking Pearl Harbor.
I don't think that Hitler would have been content to use two bombs only. He would have used them on the UK and then on Russia. And on the US as well.
After all, it was Hitler versus the rest of the world. Australia did qualified to get one as well.

Not that I am defending the use of atomic/nuclear weapons, but the only reason why the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki was to save lives on both sides. The only alternative was to stage an invasion of the islands of Japan which would have resulted in thousands of more lives (through war & suicide) on both sides. The Japanese had refused to surrender despite the hopelessness of their situation in August 1945.
Wouldn't it just? But that seems to be the way with the U.N. they sit around a table and vote on things, then send letters out and sit around a table some more and talk about how "unacceptable" everything is.
U.N. should now stand for Useless Nitwits.
In heaven, there are no interesting people - Nietzsche
...they sit around a table and vote on things, then send letters out and sit around a table some more and talk about how "unacceptable" everything is...
So should they do? Drop a bomb on them? Economic sanctions? Declare WW III? Just curious...
I don't know what they should do, but if all they do is sit around and talk about things and write angry letters to the "bad people", then what is the use of them? Look at N Korea, do they give a flying dingo what the U.N. has to say? There was a headline on the CNN (or was it BBC) news site that said something along the lines of "Rejected in record time" because N Korea took just 45mins to reply to their letter with a "Like hell we will"-rejection.
What, if any, is the point of the U.N? Were they meant to be some sort of body with some power in the world, or are they just a round table discussion group organisation?
In heaven, there are no interesting people - Nietzsche
By its own definition it's a "global association of governments facilitating co-operation in international law, international security, economic development, and social equity." So, in simpler terms, its an advisory body. The trouble is not every nation recognises it and some only do so when it suits them.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they also have a Peace Keeping force? Those military guys with the light blue berets, I think it was.
Yes you are correct.
As Paula's definition states, the idea behind the U.N. was great, the reality is it is all but irrelevant. Corruption and indecisiveness make it largely ineffective.
The U.S. essentially run it, which is one of the biggest problems. There doesn't seem to be a clear set of international laws that the U.N. enforces.
For example I would have thought that the U.N. should have the power to intervene in security and/or humanitarian crisis' such as that with North Korea at the moment, instead they're um'ing and ah'ing over what they can/should do.
It should be simple, the member nations vote on if the U.N. should intervene, if the majority are in favour then they intervene.
Although if this was the case, they would probably find themselves constantly at war with rogue states and despots.
They may as well disband the U.N. and have it as "everyone for themselves" since this seems to be the attitude of most countries anyway.
I seriously doubt N Korea will listen to anyone or any group. They will do as they please until they are satisfied. Even if the U.N. were to write up a list of rules/conditions that if not met would bring on sanctions, by the time they get that "angry letter" to N Korea they would have done all the testing they want to and will cease anyway.
It will be interesting to see how things pan out with them since the Middle East crisis seems to be taking up everyone's time.

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- The United States will start deploying missile interceptors at a key air force base in Japan from this summer, as part of efforts with Tokyo to deal with the threat of North Korea's missile arsenal, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
The U.S. military will install Patriot Advanced Capability-3 surface-to-air interceptors at its Kadena Air Base on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa from September and plans to make them partly operational by the end of the year, the ministry said.
They will be fully operational by the end of March, a ministry official added.
The deployment of the PAC-3s at Kadena -- the largest U.S. air base in the Asia-Pacific -- would be the first at a U.S. facility in Japan.
Japanese officials said while the system was meant to protect the country from North Korea's missiles -- which include hundreds of Rodong missiles that can hit all of Japan -- the timing of the deployment, soon after Pyongyang's test-firing of seven missiles earlier this month, was a coincidence.
In heaven, there are no interesting people - Nietzsche
The Patriot mostly failed against Saddam's Scuds, admittedly an earlier version of the Patriot. Still the Rodong is far more sophisticated than a relatively slow Scud and many more sophisticated missiles and rockets exist (Russian for example) that can easily circumvent a Patriot defence.
The Patriots are for feel good security only, but even if they get one out five (which is what they did in the Gulf + one English fighter bomber, a Tornado) that's better than none at all. Against older missiles, I believe the new Patriot should be be as good as three in five.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
They are 100% surrounded by nuclear powers. At any moment one of them could invade or threaten N Korea.
If they redress the imbalance by having the bomb, then America would have to back down from bullying them.
Smart move if you want to stay in power.

Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says he will not expel North Korea's ambassador to Australia in the wake of Pyongyang's nuclear test.
Mr Downer met with the ambassador, Chon Jae Hong, at Parliament House this morning.
He says he understands many Australians may have wanted him to take the symbolic step, but says there is a "marginal advantage" in maintaining diplomatic channels.
"I don't suppose it would make any difference one way or the other, so we may as well maintain some line of communication with the North Koreans," he said.
"But it's very much an on-balance decision.
"There's no sort of absolute right or wrong but I think my own judgment is that it is slightly better to keep some lines of communication with them, bearing in mind they are part of the Asia Pacific region."
Mr Downer says he made it clear to Mr Chon that it is of grave concern to Australia that North Koreans depend on food aid to live, while the country spends billions of dollars on building weapons.
Mr Downer says he told the ambassador that North Korea's closest ally, China, has been treated shabbily by the rogue state.
Mr Chon says his country needs nuclear weapons to defend itself.
"We are under extreme threat of the United States of the nuclear war," he said.
But Mr Downer says the nuclear test has led to a deterioration of security and the condemnation of the entire world.
"I told the ambassador also that we would support United Nations Security Council sanctions under chapter seven, [that] we were urging friends and allies in the United Nations to pass a resolution imposing sanctions under chapter seven," he said.
"We would also take steps ourselves to restrict visas to North Koreans visiting Australia, so there won't be any more visas given to North Koreans to visit Australia except in exceptional circumstances."
Mr Downer adds that the Government is satisfied the nuclear test took place, but experts are still working to determine the size and nature of the test.
Sanctions
The United Nations Security Council condemned the nuclear test overnight, and will meet again tomorrow to consider how to respond to North Korea's nuclear test.
The United States is leading the push for sanctions and is proposing measure that include the international inspection of all cargo to and from North Korea.
It is also proposing financial sanctions targeting North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, as well as a variety of restrictions on imports and exports.
Mr Downer says the Government will be pushing for a robust sanctions regime and one that is enforced.
"It's one thing to pass resolutions but it's another thing to enforce them," he said.
Greens leader Bob Brown says sanctions implemented against the rogue state must not impact on the people of North Korea.
"I think there should be humanitarian aid continued to North Korea, but beyond that there needs to be very tough measures taken by the world community," he said.
"The Greens are mightily concerned about nuclear weapons spreading in our region."
Arms race fears
Former Australian prime minister Paul Keating says he fears North Korea's nuclear test may prompt Japan to acquire nuclear weapons.
Mr Keating says if Japan does get nuclear weapons, it would be particularly confronting for China.
"My great concern is that Japan may use the impasse with North Korea and this testing of its nuclear weapons to move into nuclear weapons itself, eschewing the nuclear protection provided to it by the United States under its umbrella," he said.
"In other words, in nuclear terms going it alone."
Mr Keating says any move by Japan to get nuclear weapons could destabilise the East Asia region.
"Such an outcome would be very affronting and confronting to the Chinese, encouraging them to adopt an all together different posture in respect to Japan," he said.
"And if it adopts an all together different posture in respect to Japan, the world we know today changes."
NORTH KOREA detonated a nuclear weapon yesterday, provoking international condemnation and a regional emergency as leaders reacted with shock.
Quoted Text
A source close to the regime told Reuters the test had been carried out to dispel doubts about North Korea's strength and deter US threats of regime change. "Now they can't underestimate North Korea or say North Korea is bluffing." The source also said North Korea had detonated a neutron bomb, designed to release larger amounts of deadly radiation than other nuclear weapons.
In heaven, there are no interesting people - Nietzsche
According to the Bush doctrine of invading "rogue states" with weapons of mass destruction, if we invaded a country that may have had them, do we now invade a "rogue state" that definitely does have them? If the answer is NO, then everyone should get the Bomb to potect themselves.

Don't you think it's a little naive to believe the creator will magically solve the world's problems? I am not questioning the existence of a creator, but from what we've seen there has been no direct intervention by the creator since the old testament (plagues upon villages, death of first borns etc), and this is all unproven theology.
From recent history it appears that if a creator exists, that entity is non-interventionist. They let life out play out on it's own and watch us throw ourselves off the edge of a cliff like Lemmings. What makes you think there will be intervention now? Why was there no intervention during much greater crisis such as WWII (death toll: 62 million) or the Holocaust (death toll: 6 million)?
You expect the creator to only act when religion is under threat?
It's a little bit insulting to the millions of people who have sufferred and are still sufferring to say this is definitely going to happen and hold-on til then.

If God had intervened earlier, people would have still believed that man could rule himself without Gods guidance. There is nothing He can’t fix (including all the death) so once mankind see the results of men ruling man and how badly it turns out. . God will step in at His own time to stop the Earth being ruined.

Kim Jong-il 'sorry' about nuclear test Friday Oct 20 14:25 AEST North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has reportedly expressed regret about his country's nuclear test to a Chinese delegation.
According to a South Korean newspaper report, the rogue-state leader has also apparently told a Chinese envoy that Pyongyang will return to stalled talks on ending its nuclear programs, if Washington lifts a financial crackdown against it.
The Chosun Ilbo newspaper has quoted a diplomatic source in China as saying Kim also expressed regret to state councillor and former foreign minister Tang Jiaxuan about the difficult position in which its October 9 nuclear test has placed Beijing.
"If the United States gives in to a certain degree, we will also do so, whether it's bilateral talks or six-party talks," the source quoted Kim as saying, according to Chosun Ilbo.
China faces pressure to act over North Korea at summit Page last updated at 6:34 GMT, Saturday, 29 May 2010 7:34 UK
China is to face renewed pressure from South Korea to censure North Korea over the sinking of one of the South's warships, amid rising tensions.
Seoul is hosting a three-way summit with China and Japan as it steps up its diplomatic efforts over what it says was a torpedo attack by the North.
Beijing has so far refused to condemn North Korea, but has said it would assess the evidence objectively.
Pyongyang has fiercely denied the allegations.
South Korea says an investigation involving international teams uncovered indisputable evidence that North Korea fired a torpedo at the ship.
It has announced a package of measures, including a halt to most trade with North Korea, and is also seeking action via the United Nations Security Council.
If such action is to succeed, China's support is crucial.
Speaking on Friday, Mr Wen said China "will not protect" whoever sank the warship.
Beijing is under pressure to take a strong stance against North Korea but so far has not accepted the findings of the independent investigation.
Mr Wen said that China would take its position after "objectively and fairly judging" the evidence while "respecting the international probe and responses to it by each nation".
Early on Saturday, on his way to the summit, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama paid his respects at the graves of the 46 sailors who were killed in the explosion.
The BBC's John Sudworth in Seoul says the gesture was a demonstration of solidarity with South Korea and its conclusion that the ship was attacked by North Korea.
Japan has already said it is tightening its stringent sanctions against North Korea.
The three leaders will hold two days of talks on the South Korean resort island of Jeju.
North and South Korea are technically still at war after the Korean conflict ended without a peace treaty in 1953.
