Rove McManus, Haimish Blake, Andy Lee and Ten are launching a new show that focuses on making fun of current affairs. Could this be ads for that show?
maybe. It's a good idea. |

Hahahahahah! Lurveit please tell me the ads for the 'Wedge' did not lure you into watching the show. What? Where you having an OFF day? omg... I would never watch a show called the 'Wedge' made in Australia and that was advertised as a comedy hahahahahah! Some comedians don't know when to give up/die. A report in yesterday's Daily Telegraph suggested that the show is being made by Andrew Denton, and may end up being an interview-style program, where the host (David Tench) is animated. |

Reminds me of an old Simpsons episode when the local TV station ran those "Gabbo!" ads. Everyone wanted to know who Gabbo was..

Sounds interesting. They disappointed me with the Wedge, but at least TEN are trying to get some Australian comedy on. I wonder how long until we actually get to see it though, considering how long they plugged The Wedge before it was on. |

In Tv week it says it starts mid august. On the ad it shows an M rating so I guess it will be going in the Tuesday 8:30 pm timeslot as it is the only empty slot when The Oc finishes in 2 weeks. |

They could also take the 9:30pm Monday slot seeing as Numb3rs is rating really badly (barely hanging off the 500k mark).
And it would be a stupid, STUPID idea to put two interview shows back to back. Although it could boost Rove's ratings yet again but I'm tired of seeing Rove's ratings climb. I want it to get axed. |

Rove has never been better - I really enjoyed his show last week..
At first I thought David Tench might be scheduled for the 6pm nightly timeslot.. but if it is rated M as reported by sav, it's obviously going after 8.30... perhaps replacing Uplate? Who knows.. |

If the title of the show is 'David Tench Tonight', it sounds like it might be on more than once a week....? Also, at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Tench, it says that the identity of Tench will be revealed during the Big Brother finale |

It's an interesting way to promote the show though. Making people all curious.
I checked that Wikipedia article and the article is being considered for deletion. I didn't know Wikipedia did that. |

From todays Sydney Morning Herald, by Greg Hassall:
Beware the Hype of viral campaigns Who is David Tench? Well, hes the host of an upcoming chat show on Channel Ten, produced by Andrew Denton's production company Zapruder's Other Films. But he's more (and less) than that.
For a start, he's probably not real - Tench is an anagram for "Ch Ten" - as the show is believed to include elements of animation and digital enhancements. He's also the latest example of viral marketing, whereby publicity for a product is generated by stealth, giving the false impressionit has evolved organically rather than through the standard PR channels.
Viral marketing has been around for ages, but it has been made easier by the internet, which allows rapid, widespread disseminationof material and the ability to disguise its source.
In this case, Ten has combined on-air promos, featuring lame quotes from Tench, with a sophisticated online presence. Websites have been established giving hints to his identity and that of the show, chat rooms are full of speculation and an entry has even been created for the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
Unfortunately for Ten, Wikipedia twigged to the PR stunt last week. A truncated version of the original entry remained as we went to press, but it included a link to the following advisory: "The article was created to promote an as-yet-unaired television program on Australian television, and Wikipedia is being used inappropriately as part of a 'viral marketing' campaign"
Interestingly, this process was satirised in a 1993 episode of The Simpsons called Krusty gets Kancelled, in which ads start appearing for a mysterious television personality called Gabbo. As a result of the hype, the show is a hit, but Lisa and Bart see the campaign for what it is, a cynical ploy, and engineer its downfall.
Perhaps there is a lesson here for Denton and Ten. For now the Tench campaign is clearly working. People are talking about the show without Ten having to spend money on conventional advertising or even provide many details about it. But theres always a danger a viral campaign will backfire. The young, internet-savvy people the Tench campaign is aimed at can smell a gimmick a mile off. They dont like being used and if the show doesnt live up to expectations - which are already high, given Denton's reputation - they'll turn. |

It made the news. Well I suppose this gives the show a bit more publicity. And I did think that Tench was an anagram of Ch Ten. |

Maybe this is Ten's replacement for Rove. Not saying Rove will get cancelled but say in a year or two Rove decides to stop, Ten has something to fall back on. |

The idea isn't bad. But it's just too american. Everything he says sounds like "Hello Hollywood, girlfriend."
Maybe if it was actually about stuff from all around the world as the ad said, then I would watch. But "USA + UK" does not equal "the world" |

Also let us not forget this guy from 1985 to around 1990: Max Headroom Started out as TV Movie in the UK, then the US picked it up and had a series of it, which lead to a show featuring the Computer Generated Max Headroom hosting a Music Video Program and interviewing Celebs (plus Coke ads featuring it as well and various other things) ... though I guess that was 16 to 21 years ago and we are not supposed to remember things from that long ago. |

Yup, I remember Ten playing Saving Private Ryan even before 9pm at around 8.45pm at one stage on a Saturday evening with the AV15+ rating (which is higher than MA15+, at least in terms of violence), and Ten have also played American Pie with an MA15+ rating on the 9pm timeslot.. |

I'm glad Ronnie John's is on earlier, it was one of the best comedies on TV last year. Is Tom Cruise really on David Tench Tonight? If he is, do they animate him to? Does anyone know any more about the show? |

I'm pretty sure it won't be the real people. I think its supposed to be satirical, and if they interviewed the real Tom Cruise, they wouldn't be able to say anything that might be vaguely offensive. |

I think it is real people, because there was an ad during Aus Idol giving previews of it. I think the first guest is Pat Rafter. Perhaps they were exaggerating with Tom Cruise, Angelina etc.. |

Virtual Tench makes historyBy Erin McWhirter August 14, 2006 12:00am A PIECE of TV history is being made with the creation of animated talk show host David Tench. Network Ten's David Tench Tonight is the brainchild of Enough Rope presenter Andrew Denton and his production company, Zapruder's Other Films. While motion capture and digital enhancement technologies have been used by the film industry for nearly a decade, this program is a first for television. In David Tench Tonight, a virtual cartoon host interviews real people in real time. Like other talk show hosts, viewers will watch Tench perched behind a desk, interviewing his guests live in a studio. "That's the world-first about it, guests see him in real time," producer Todd Abbott said. "It's never been tried before and I imagine it will grab the attention of people around the world. "Tench is something that is pioneering the way for the future." Denton's company has partnered with Sydney-based digital production company, Animal Logic, on the project. The technology used to produce Tench is the same adopted to create creepy Lord of The Rings character, Gollum. The real personality behind Tench - who will never be revealed - will wear a sensor-suit marking their basic movements, which will make the animated character come across as lifelike as possible. Abbott said the concept of the program might be hard to grasp. "It wasn't until I saw the early character work that the penny dropped," he said. "It's a concept that doesn't bear trying to be explained, it only works if you see it. It sounds far more confusing than what it is." Denton's love for cartoons sparked Tench's creation and, over 10 months, his company explored the concept for a television program, and developed a detailed back story for Tench's character. Tench's biography says the Australian-born star recently returned to Australia after a decade in the United States, where he hosted breakfast show Surprise! Good Morning! for eight years. He has two children, a passion for poetry, and Nine's chief executive Eddie McGuire used to be his copy-kid. Abbott said Tench's looks were modelled on famous television talk show hosts such as David Letterman, Jay Leno and Bert Newton, as well as radio men Alan Jones and John Laws. "It was about picking and choosing the features of those talk show hosts we liked and combining it to create David," Abbott said. So far, he said all guests - starting with tennis champion Patrick Rafter and Killing Heidi band member Ella Hooper - have warmed to the experience. "The idea of interaction with people who are slightly cartoonistic opens guests up so much more," Abbott said. "It allows the guest to relax and have fun. He (Tench) is able to be far more honest and so much more real in his questions than a lot of other reporters are able to be. He's also a lot cheekier." * David Tench Tonight premieres August 17 at 8.30pm (AEST) on Network Ten. http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,23663,20119790-10388,00.html# |

That's because Australian talk-show hosts are gutless. *cough* Rove *cough* Look at what Oprah managed to squeeze out of him, and some dude on the American version of 60 Minutes (sic?) They could easily just ask Tom Cruise a bunch of cliche questions, and re-film the questions afterwards. |

I don't think it was canned laughter, but rather a studio audience. |

It was definitely very bad canned laughter. Totally uncalled for. I don't think there could be a live audience with what is obviously CGI for 'David'. The 'guests' would have to be looking at an empty chair or a cardboard cutout or a standin for the taping of it. I too would love to see who the voice belongs to. I enjoyed the bits I saw although I think Tench could get on my nerves at times. Patrick Rafter is such a lovely bloke and Ella Hooper looks better with dark hair! |

Have to admit I didn't mind it after thinking I would absolutely hate it.
Tench is ok but the guests are what made it,Pat Rafter was a good fun as was Ella.
Even though I'm a nine fan liked the idea for the new show 'Dancing Under The Ice'! |

I thought it was funny although it was designed as a totally tounge in cheek.
It has potential I'll give it that - although I thought it might of had some decent celbs.
at least they are producing some light hearted entertainment breaks up the week a bit but think it should be a hour show and put in a different timeslot. |

I actually found myself trying to hold back a few laughs, so it wasn't that bad. Pat and Ella were cool. But Ella looks better with darker hair. :-p A few things REALLY bugged me though. Tench's soliloquies are unfunny and his laugh is so frequent and annoying! And what's with his obsession with referring to his guests continuously by their full names? i.e. Pat Rafter, Pat Rafter, Pat Rafter, Ella Hooper, Ella Hooper etc. That also really distracted me. It made made Tench look like a kiss a**. Overall, a decent show. I *MIGHT* tune in next week. |

I think the show is only going to improve and so is its ratings. Every one at work today that watched it liked it and said Tench was quite funny. I think Nelly Furtado will be funny next week (if she laughs like she did on Rove, lol), he also has Troy Cassar-Daley on. |

David Tench's identity has been revealed. His personality appears to be an amalgam of well-known figures. Radio's Alan Jones, former Good Morning Australia host Gordon Elliott and maybe even Ten's own Rove McManus could be in the mix. But as revealed today by columnist Jackie Lee Lewes it's identity behind spoiler cut. source: http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,23663,20224395-10388,00.html |

this is a crap show , hopefully we wont have to worry about who the hell it is talking anyway.
i watched the 1st one out of curiousity, along with many others ( no wonder ratings seem to go alright) ...this week - a drop in ratings , this could also be because people are not use to the habit and or forgot about it...or like me, thought it was sh*t the first time. none the less - i will expect this also to fall in a heap pretty quickly & hopefully.
i'll give it 10 episodes or under.
surely Denton could do better than this !
jokes are'nt funny, and i don't think we will adapt to the animation bit either ( i won't be ) i'd rather real life person myself, WITH HUMOUR .
i heard a ' rumour ' ( yep, another one ) .... Tim Ferguson was the voice ?

Ugh, he was even more annoying last night. I HATE his unfunny soliloquies and I LOATHE the fact that he addresses his guests by their full name. It was particularly distracting last night. It had the potential to be a great show if only the host wasn't such an arrogant twat. It's also a little sad that they couldn't even wait until the second episode until the vocal identity of David Tench was exposed. Hell, it's been eighteen years and we still don't know which state The Simpsons live in. |

I know people have discussed it, however to me the Audience has to be a canned one (or an audience watches it filmed and is cued to laugh) and it is one of the reasons the show falls flat ... there is no interaction with an audience in any way ... not a glimpse across to even pretend as if there is one there by host or guest ... even on shows like Parkinson ... though the audience is a not really seen you know one is there by looks from guests and Parkinson ... interview shows like these need an audience or it is just bland and Tench proves that point. |

totally agree ! ..it has to be a lump of wood ready to be axed ..surely ! no interaction what so ever is a massive mistake, canned laughter is sickening ...i mean the whole thing just looks sooo fake , not just the animation ! lol and now slightly changing subject ...co's i cant hold it any longer, and no councilors are open this time of night ,but: i may regret this , and many will disagree with me , but i can't wait for a saturday live interview show to hit town one day ..say 1- 2 hrs . but its who i want that might disgust people even more ! .. yet i could understand where their coming from , but...... Bert Newton - BUT ! ..it must be his concept , his style , his rules with little network intrusion what so ever ....i think he's been nothing but screwed around since starting again, and has'nt run completely free for many years ! i still think he's got something inside, nevr mind good morning aust , family fued ...wrong shows wrong concept ...and its not him . only prob i would suspect ...is todays PC Viewing Police whinging and complaining like pathetic 'tards over something he said blah blah ..actually , mmmmm maybe the full Bert Version days are gone , not him , but society in general are ! did i just say that ? |

David Tench's identity has been revealed.
I find the Identity you mention as implausable mainly due to a number of points... Gordon Elliot hosted his own call-in program from Perth, Western Australia, He returned to law school but kept working part-time on Sydney radio. Gordon finally got his chance as a US reporter/producer on A Current Affair, where he worked from 1987 to 1991 He moved on to Hard Copy in 1991, during which time he also hosted the NBC network re-launch of To Tell the Truth Gordon has acted in several movies and is raising two sons, Angus and Duncan This fits in with Comments claimed : His biography claims the Australian-born star recently returned to Australia after a decade in the US, where he hosted breakfast show Surprise! Good Morning! for eight years. David has two children (Marcelle & Gigi) David was lured behind the microphone first as a cadet and then as the regular sports reporter on radio Coincidence ? I think not... Further - Funny how the news item http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,23663,20224395-10388,00.html ( August 23, 2006 12:00am)" appears to be an amalgam of well-known figures. Radio's Alan Jones, former Good Morning Australia host Gordon Elliott and maybe even Ten's own Rove McManus could be in the mix" compare: http://news.awn.com/index.php?ltype=top&newsitem_no=17705 (August 15, 2006) " Tench's looks were modeled on famous television talk show hosts such as David Letterman, Jay Leno and Bert Newton, as well as radio men Alan Jones and John Laws " |

I must be in a minority here. I find the show to be entertaining. The canned laughter and fake laughs from Tench are weak-points for sure. But the one-liners still come across as amusing to me. |

I like the show, although last weeks show wasn't as good as the first in my opinion. But I can't see it being axed, TEN has signed on for 26eps... |

Tench should really learn to address his guests by their first names if he's to survive on the air. I think Ten advertised it really poorly this week. Particularly the Claudia Karvan ads. |

He has learned with the full name thing it seems, tonight he said just Claudia or Mark most of the time and only said there full names a couple times. The show is getting better, it was funnier tonight then last week, much better! |

hmm we had it on last night as noise (wasnt much else on either) and I caught the Mark Holden bit. I thought he was a prat, but I LOVED the insults that flew between them near the end.
Also, the wiggy wack oogly googly talk was funny.
Wasnt enough to get me to want to watch the show all the time though : / |

No, the guests and studio audience can actually see Tench live. He is edited with motion capture animation a la Polar Express, where the physical movements of the guy who provides his voice is instantly animated.
They also made fun of motion capture animation in an episode of The Simpsons where Homer played a dog. |

What does everyone think of the new timeslot? Tench deffinetely tried to be more controversial and rude last week. I think the new timeslot allows the show to be better, last weeks episode was one of the better ones, hopefully it continues this way. It looks like he has three guests on this week, Meatloaf, Layne Beachley and Matthew Reilly. I dont know how they are going to fit three interviews in, it feels rushed enough as it is with two guests... |

Controversial? I reckon the show can pass with a PG rating.
Anyways, I agree about Tench's lack of involvement with the audience, that could add a lot to the show. |

Tonight Tench talks to two of The Wiggles (Murray Cook and Anthony Field), heres what Tench had to say about his interview:
"It was great to chat with my two favourite Wiggles – Murray Cook and Anthony Field. We've got more in common than you think because single mums love me too. I asked them what it feels like to control the world's child population, whether or not they like kids and how Jeff's new line of insomnia medication is coming along."
Also on the show tonight is Gia Carides:
"She's Greek, she's sleek, she's married and she told me to back off. Gia's husband is Anthony LaPaglia from 'Without A Trace' and if he ever disappeared without a trace I'm sure she'd come around. I ask her if she really did have a 'Big Fat Greek Wedding', and if she did, why it doesn't show."
Don't forget to watch, Tonight 9.30 on TEN! Followed by The Ronnie Johns 1/2 Hour. |

Man, I cringed my way through the first Wiggles interview. It just wasn't funny! The Wiggles didn't give Tench anything to play with, and so they shouldn't, they are role models to little kiddies, and obviously like to keep their noses clean 24/7, no matter what. The poor guys seemed rather unconfortable, don't you think? I don't want to watch anymore, I'm turning this unfunny show off! |

The way Anthony was uncomfortable actually made it more entertaining for me (you could still see that he was enjoying it in the end). The Wiggles knew what they were getting themselves into when they agreed to do the interview, maybe they should have declined. |

Just to let you guys know, next week's episode is the season finale at the special time of 10.00pm, due to a 90-minute documentary at 7.30pm on Jamie Oliver. Jericho will also be pushed back to 9.00pm. Johnny Knoxville will be featured in the season finale. |

They filmed it two weeks ago. And don't hold your breath for a Rove Live finale. They show has been put on hold until next year. |

It already is, isn't it? I give TEN credit for trying something different, but they would have been better off spending the money on a decent sit-com or something. |

I am still a fan of Tench, but I am losing interest in the show fast. I'll continue to watch it though as it does seem to be improving, even though the guests are getting crapper. Johnny Knoxville should be funny next week though and I'm interested to see what Julia Gillard has to say. I haven't totally lost faith in the show yet, but it seems like TEN has. |

Not surprised. The instant I saw Tench's identity, I knew the show would fail. I hated the quotes they've been playing throughout the years, and although I'll admit that I loathe the host a little less, it's not much better.
I don't mind an animated talk show, but we need a more LIKEABLE host. |

Ten will probably give the show a much-needed facelift and stick it in an earlier timeslot following The Simpsons. |

I dont think it will change much, but will probably be left as is, it is improving. I can't think where they would slot it though? It would still have to be on after 9.30. |

I don't think Ten would air it after 9.30pm again. I mean, just look at the ratings. The premiere barely rated at over a million, and a few weeks ago, the ratings stooped as low as 470,000. I think an earlier timeslot would be better suited for this sort of show.
Unless they place David Tench in a graveyard timeslot to rival the late-night talkshows. |
