This is how it works. I post a riddle, the next person posts the answer and a new riddle. then the 3rd poster posts the answer to that and a new riddle. etc
Get it?
Well I'll start easy:
What's black and white and red all over?

it's a newspaper! (I've also heard this one as being a sunburnt zebra)

NOTE: Dara - you may have to add a rule to state that the poster of the riddle must confirm the correct answer before the next riddle is posted

Okay............I will set one.........
I cover what's real, hide what is true, but sometimes bring out the courage in you. What am I?

There are a couple of answers that will fit.....

Another one...................

I have two arms, but fingers none. I have two feet, but cannot run. I carry well, but I have found I carry best with my feet OFF the ground. What am I?

Suggestion: Maybe there should be a standard time for a winner to post. . or the 'riddler' should return to give a clue so a riddle that is harder does not bring the thread to a halt.
I would offer the suggestion that if it is not solved in 24 hours somebody can post a new one until they are answered.

Then anybody simply 'quotes' the riddle they want to reply to with their answer and the game keeps moving.

New riddle:

It is in a supermarket.

You throw away the outside and cook the inside
You eat the outside and throw away the inside.

What am I?

if it is not guessed correctly I will answer same time tomorrow.

Mt Everest! (It is still the tallest, just that nobody knew )

ok, here's one.....

I met an old friend shopping the other day.
I asked her how her husband was and she said he had died!
She told me that he was having a dream he was a soldier kidnapped in Iraq and was about to have his head chopped off.
At the point when the sword came down on him she tapped him on the neck to wake him up.
Apparently the shock was so great that he died.

What veggie do you throw away the outside, cook the inside, eat the outside, and throw away the inside?

A man boarded a flight from England to L.A. Once on the plane, he sees a small acquaintance at the back of the plane, he shouted a greeting to this person by name and a few seconds later he was arrested. Why?

Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, lived a man of few talents, but he was as greedy as anyone can be. He stole, he lied and he cheated only for the sake of money and his ever-increasing treasure. One day he was trying to rob a child of his money on the edge of a lake. Innocently, the child pushed him into the lake and ran to safety.

Seeing the greedy man drowning, two passing villagers tried to help him. The first one quickly said, "Take my hand and I'll try to drag you out! Don't worry, you will be safe!" The second one rushed to help as well and stated, "Here old man, over here! Everything will be fine if you give me your hand."

The old man hesitated for a second, then took the hand of the first villager. Why?

Okay I think I've heard this one before:

The first guy said "take my hand" and the second guy said "give me your hand".  The second guy's offer sounded demanding and the robber was mean and greedy because when he was a kid his mother never gave him anything but always took things from him saying "give me this" and "give me that" so this played into his neurotic Freudian confusion between wanting to steal his mother from his father and not trusting his mother.  The second guy's statement overwhelmed him and he reacted by instinct.  He also was bitter toward his sister in retalition to being victomised by her penis envy but that didn't have much to do with it except that it contributed to his downward spiral that led to his life of crime.

Is that it?

yeah i think you got the gist of it ..but here's the answer that came with the question aswell..

The man was SO greedy, he refused to "give" his hand to the second goodhearted villager. The first villager managed to save him by telling him to "take" his hand instead of asking for it.

I was hoping you wouldn't get mad about my silly answer.  I'm glad you didn't.  I couldn't solve it so I googled it and then posted that nonsense hoping it would get someone else thinking in the right direction a little.  I shouldn't have googled and given hints either lol

This one's pretty old and probably people have already heard it and get it right off:

You, James, and Jenny sit down at a table so that each one can see the other two.  You all close their eyes and someone puts a hat on each of their heads.  You then all open your eyes.  No one peeked.  No one can see the hat on their own head.  You're all told that you all have all either had a black or white hat placed on their head, but that not all 3 of you would be wearing a white hat, that there is at least one black hat amoungst you, and you're asked what color hat you have on your own head.  You look and see that James has a black hat and that Jenny has a white one.  After quite a while you realise that you must be wearing a black hat.  You are correct, you win lots of money, a trip to Hawaii, and you get to go to the zoo and not only feed, but pet the animals.  Okay well it only mattered that you were correct.  The question is "How did you know, what was your logic?"

It's not really easy until you already know the answer.

Hint:  The fact James has not solved it is part of your logic.

ohh i think i sorta got it. is it because if jen sees james' hat is black and my hat is also black, and therefore there must be at least one white hat and so she guessed white.

And if james hasnt solve it, that must mean its because jen has a white hat and I have a black hat, and he cant decide if he has white or black hat. otherwise, IF i had a white hat, James would not be soooo confused he would guess that he has a black hat straightaway because there must be at least one black hat in the group.

sorry...i think my explanation is really confusing, but i just had to get it all out as quick as possible..

Cool. Heres another, i think this one's pretty common aswell:

A man was hiking in the hills for the first time and, for safety, he brings along two guides. At the beginning of the hike, the first guide said, "Keep all personal items close, stay behind me, and above all else, keep your balance around the steep dropoffs!" The second guide had never been on such a long hike and, despite the warnings, tumbled off one of the high cliffs and rolled into a valley. The second guide's spine was broken in the fall. The man and the first guide watched the fall, shrugged, and moved on. Why did they offer no help or concern?

A lady was out searching when she found a dead body. She screamed but not because she was unhappy. She immediately contacted the authorities yet they were not the police and became immediately rich.
Who did she contact, and why was she happy?

She screamed becuase she found the dead body of a mouse in her sandwhich, called the health department, and was awarded a whole bunch of money for the grossness she had to endure?

Suppose you want to send in the mail a valuable object to a friend. You have a box which is big enough to hold the object. The box has a locking ring which is large enough to have a lock attached and you have several locks with keys. However, your friend does not have the key to any lock that you have. You cannot send the key in an unlocked box since it may be stolen or copied. How do you send the valuable object, locked, to your friend - so it may be opened by your friend?

You could send the box with a key in it to your friend who then sends the box back.

You then send the box back again, this time locked (your friend now has the key)

I can run swiftly and silently when you want me to stay still,
I can move slowly and cautiously and am yours to fill.
You look at me often and yet you always forget me,
I am the most feared killer, yet you can't live without me.
Sometimes you have me for all to spare,
Yet when you need me, I am not there.
You can waste me, or cherish me, you choose the track,
But once you're done you can never get me back.

John, a party magician, is carrying three pieces of gold each piece weighing one kilogram.

While taking a walk he comes to a bridge which has a sign posted saying the bridge could hold only a maximum of 80 kilograms.

John weighs 78 kilograms and the gold weighs three kilograms.

John reads the sign and still safely crossed the bridge with all the gold.

How did he manage this?

No - although it is an option, but lets assume his clothes do not drop his weight enough

it does have something to do his profession. not sure what you mean about the bridge (or him) not being observant??
he does see the sign and crosses according to the weight rule

I was being mostly silly and a little bit wondering.
Is it because the gold is divided into 3 peices that he takes more than one trip... not much to do with his profession but all I can think of.

He levitates the gold, and his lovely assistant, over the bridge?
He takes all the weight all at once but makes the bridge beleive that he's only taken part of the gold and then when he gets to the other side magically makes the rest appear?
Magic simply defys logic?  Is that it?
He makes a string of cheesy jokes in the Riddles thread and while everyone is reading them and thinking "What an idiot" he runs across a fallen tree instead and then says "Behold! I have crossed the bridge."?

There are two kinds of people on an island you're visiting. There are "Honestbrants" who speak always the truth, and thre are "Swindlebrants" who always lie.

Three guys (A, B and C) are arguing at a market. You ask person A: "Are you an Honestbrant or a Swindlebrant?" The answer is just a mumble that you couldn't hear so you ask person B: "What did person A say?" Person B answers: "He said that he is a Swindlebrant."  Person C objects, cutting in and saying: "Don't listen to person B, he is a liar!"

What group does person B belong to, Honestbrant or a Swindlebrant?

b has to be a liar because if a said he was a swindle cant then he was lying and really he is a honestcant but that contradicts itselff as if he was an honestcant he'd have to say he was hinest not a liar. so b must be lying??

Three goddesses were sitting in an old Indian temple. Their names were Truth (always true), Lie (always lying) and Wisdom (sometimes lying). There was the following conversation:
Asking the left one: "Who is sitting next to you?"
"Truth," she answered.
Asking the middle one: "Who are you?"
"Wisdom."
And at last question for the right one: "Who is your neighbor?"
"Lie," she replied.

Who is who?
Left is...
Middle is..
Right is...

Okay...

The person in the middle must be either Lie or Wisdom because Truth would have answered "Truth".

The person on the left said that the person in the midde is Truth which was a lie, we've deduced.
This makes the person on the left also either Lie or Wisdom.

Since one of them must be Truth and we've eliminated the other two as being Truth, it must be the person on the Right... who has stated the Person in the Middle is Lie which makes it the Case, leaving the person on the left as Wisdom.

So from Left to Right:  [Wisdom,  Lie,  Truth]

Heres the answer that came with the riddle aswell:

When the two men looked at each other, the clean man thought his face was dirty as well. The dirty man, looking at the first`s face, thought his was clean.

Well since I got it right - I'd best put mine in huh..

EBlah news headlines !

Today Police found a body at the base of the cliff face in NSW. Police public relations have released that the body is that of a male and indications are the man suffered blunt force trama resulting in his death. Only one peice of evidence was located at the scene, a broken match.

Police are appealing for information as to the cause of death and the reason for the match - indictations are that the cliff had some baring in this matter.

He was a smoker and din't have anything to light his cigarrete with and spotted a match at the bottom.  He got the cigarrete ready by putting it in his mouth and started climbing down but he fell and hit his head at the bottom.  When he landed he swallowed the cigarrette and his left thumb nicked the match breaking it?

If that's not it then maybe the clue is in this part

thinking out loud....

ok,
from 2) he didnt fall from the cliff, but
from 4) he did fall
also,
from 3) the cliff may or may not be next to the sea

so
from 1) something to do with the cliff and him - possibly the blunt force trauma issue - his head and the cliff somehow connecting?

as to the match - im guessing something to do with nighttime/darkness and the match being broken - of course the match may be irrelevant?

ok, he crawled into a pipe, it was dark so he lit a match to see where he was...it was the inside of a cannon!...the lit match caused the cannon to go off, shooting him out of it and into the cliff face where he hit his head and died (blunt force trauma) and also broke the match??

yeah, i was having fun with the above answer....

my thinking is that he fell from a plane, or maybe a hot air balloon? - possibly lighting the match in the balloon causing it to explode and him dropping?

or maybe he parachuted? - but there was no sign of the parachute

it seems the match has some importance - it depends what he was using it for - a smoker, it was dark, something else?

come on people, get thinking!

Maybe just that he broke the match in the dark trying to light it, indicating no success with getting it lit, and he tripped and fell hitting his head and the cliff was ...um ... he walked into the cliff in the dark and fell... or something else simpler than what we're expecting.

ok, i was thinking maybe there is a ladder on the side of the cliff.
the man was climbing (up or down) and because it was dark he decided to light a match to see his way...well, you all know the rest!

now after having this thought, i did a little searching and found a solution to this which is a little obscure....the important clue is that the match is very important in all this, think a little more laterally about it being broken (and nothing to do with it being lit)...also half the answer is in one of my posts above.....

ohh i thought coctosan got it right, with the ladder..

heres one:

A woman shoots her husband.
Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes.
Finally, she hangs him.
But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together.
How can this be?

Something to do with laundry maybe but I don't get the shooting part specifically, except a tomato sauce accident, and I don't understand the usage "holds him" "hangs him".

Maybe someone else can use that if it's on the right track.

Susan watched as her husband boarded the 8:15 pm Qantas flight from Melbourne to Auckland. She then drove home from the airport and proceeded to watch a movie. About one hour into the movie there was a news flash: the 8:15 pm Qantas flight from Melbourne to Auckland had crashed with no survivors. Susan did not react. She just continued to watch the movie. How come?

1. She was catatonic.

2. She he used a big peice of wood to board the flight.  He just ran out onto the runway and hit the tyre with a peice of wood is all.

3. He owned a hanger and was just letting the plane sleep and refuel there, boarded it for the night in the hanger.

4. Skydiver.

Here's my guess:  He worked as the guy who cleaned up the planes, so he wasn't on the flight, he boarded and de-boarded and then had his lunch break at the KFC inside the airport.

hmmmm,

a few possibilities

1) her husband was already dead and was boarded on the plane in a coffin
2) her husband was a terrorist and was going to blow the plane up
3) susan was asleep when the broadcast came on
4) the one i think it might be - the broadcast was actually part of the movie she was watching and thus not real?

the closet one was number 4...

Hint: It was a genuine, accurate news flash.
The woman's husband had boarded the plane; however, the woman knew her husband hadn't been killed.

She was watching a recording?

This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it! In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out! Try to do so without any coaching!

A farmer and his hired help were carrying grain to the barn. The farmer carried one sack of grain and the hired help carried two sacks. Who carried the heavier load and why?

The train line between Melbourne and Geelong is 50 km long.
At 12:00, train A leaves Geelong for Melbourne and travels at 60 km per hour.
At 12:10, train B leaves Melbourne for Geelong and travels at 80 km per hour.
When the two trains pass each other, which will be closer to Geelong?

I'm so frustrated with the riddles.  I really want to solve one.   I know this one, I think, but it's because I've heard it before so working out the answer just doesn't count.  I used to be okay at these but I really suck now.  I think a blood vessel in my brain must have popped and left me slightly dumber.

I got one:

I have one, you have one.
If you remove the first letter, a bit remains.
If you remove the second, bit still remains.
After much trying, you might be able to remove the third one also, but it remains.
It dies hard!

Four legs have I, a sturdy fellow
A fuzzy back that isn't yellow
But (often) green or (rarely) red
A den is where I make my bed
My keepers feed me coloured balls
With sticks they store on my den walls
Sometimes I store them in my pouch
Sometimes deep in my belly; ouch!
That's when you'll see me acting strange
Instead of balls, I'll eat your change
And that's my cue to feed again
Chalk it up to hunger, friend!

Car in Hebrew is 'Letter' as in 'Epistle' but it's only in the bible today as a title or heading that we've made up and was never part of the actual wording.  As the word appears in the text, it appears in Greek and in Latin but not in Hebrew.  Never the less, 'Epistle' is the answer.

You walk into a very unusual clothing store. The owner charges $3 for a tie, $3 for a hat, and $5 for a shirt. How much would a jacket cost?

It doesn't hurt to take a hard look at yourself from time to time. This little test should help you get started.

During a visit to a mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criteria is that defines if a patient should be institutionalized.

"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub. Then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup, and a bucket to the patient and ask the patient to empty the bathtub."

Okay, here's your test:
1. Would you use the spoon?
2. Would you use the teacup?
3. Would you use the bucket?

"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would choose the bucket, as it is larger than the spoon."
What was the director's response?

Fred had an argument with his wife, who had cooked him a nice meal.  She got really mad, took his food and threw it on the floor.  She went and got an iron bar and then there was a big earthquake.  She dropped everything and ran out of the house but a vase fell on Fred's head and knocked him out.  The earthqauke mad the iron bar pop up off of the ground and land on his back.
Afterward, Fred's wife had a moment of clarity because of the earthquake and felt bad for being angry with fred seeing it as petty and he wasn't really dead but sleeping.  Then they had sex.

LB - you're assuming it's a glass mirror.

What if it was a highly polished steel mirror, the bullet could ricochet....

Can I ask one more?
Here i go
According to the Constitution of most of the countries, in order to became President there are only five pre-requisites. The candidate must:

1. be at least 35 or certain years old.
2. be a citizen of that country
3. have resided in that country for at least 14 years or certain years
4. have been born in that country.

What is the fifth requirement?

Perth is called the City of Lights ever since John Glenn, the first American in orbit (1962) asked the citizens ...."to turn on the lights at Perth" as he crossed over.

312211

1.1-1.2-1.1-2,1-1.1-1,1-2,2-1. then looking at that last number there are 3 1's, 2 2's, and 1 1, hence 312211

Okay....I can do this

987654321

now add
9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1=45
1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9=45

now subtract
987654321
123456789
-------------
864197532

now add
8+6+4+1+9+7+5+3+2=45

therfore 45-45=45

Andrew left his house to go to work. When he got home he saw that his house had been broken into. The robbers had taken everything in his house except for 2 one hundred dollar bills that were in plain sight.

Why weren't the one hundred dollar bills taken?

Land of What?

There's a land where there's mummies and daddies but no babies. Books but no libraries. Mirrors but no reflections. Kittens but no cats. Cattle but no cows. Lollipops but no candy and trees but no forests. It's the land of what?

Tom and his younger sister were fighting. Their mother was tired of the fighting, and decided to punish them by making them stand on the same piece of newspaper in such a way that they couldn't touch each other.

How did she accomplish this?

They were carrying a boat, like a row boat, upside down across the bridge?  Or the boat was capsized or underwater and no one had gotten out?

It doesn't really matter. The so-called "punchline" can refer to a number of different animals. *hint hint*

You have a string-like fuse that burns in exactly one minute. The fuse is inhomogeneous, and it may burn slowly at first, then quickly, then slowly, and so on. You have a match, and no watch. How do you measure exactly 30 seconds?

You're a farmer. You're going to a market to buy some animals. On the market there are 3 types of animals for sale. You can buy:

Horses for £10 each, goats for £1 each and ducks, you get 8 of these per bunch and each bunch costs £1.

The aim is to acquire 100 animals at the cost of £100, what is the combination of horses, goats and duck that allows you to do this? (You must buy at least one of each.)

I'm actually too lazy to start working on it.  Let this be a lesson to the people currently in school.  Not only do you not need anything above basic maths for most occupations, but you also can get through life being too lazy to use your brain overall.

You have a 3 and a 5 litre water container, each container has no markings except for that which gives you it's total volume. You also have a running tap. You must use the containers and the tap in such away as to exactly measure out 4 litres of water. How is this done?
The 5 litre container will not fit under the tap..................

Okay... fill the 3 litre and put it in the 5.  fill the 3 litre and overflow the 5.  fill the 3 litre from the 5, leaving 2 litres in the 5 container.  Empty the 3, pour the 2 litres in the 3 container.  Make a line on the container to mark the spot.  Pour the 2 litres back in the 5 container, fill the 3 up to the mark, pour that into the 5 container.  You now have 4 litres in the 5 container.

fill the 3, pour it in the 5, fill the 3, pour it to fill the 5 leaving one litre in the 3. empty the 5. pour what's left in the 3 into the 5, fill the 3, pour it into the 5.  That's easier than the first attempt.  I don't know why I made it more complicated before.

I remember one.
You sit at a table with 2 other people.  All of you are wearing either a green or a purple hat.  You can't see your own, but you can see the colour that the other 2 people are wearing.  You see that one has a green one and one has a purple one.  All of you are told that whoever guesses the colour on their own head correctly wins, and that not all 3 of you have green.  After quite a while the room is silent and you stare each other down without laughing, and you say "AHA!!!!!! mine is purple!  I am the master!  I win!  What did I win?"

How did you know what colour you had?

I always like this one.
If you had a green hat, then the guy with the purple hat would see you and the other guy with green hats and know his was purple because you're not all wearing green hats based on the information you were all given.  Since there's continued silence, you have to assume yours is purple or that guy would have known right away.

Easier one:
What number, when added to the number three or multiplied by it, gives the same result?

I suck at math. Well, I did pretty well in high school, but since I can't really apply algebra/trionometry or any of that nonsense in my day-to-day life, all my mathematical knowledge was quickly forgotten.

I'm a riddle in nine syllables,
An elephant, a ponderous house,
A melon strolling on two tendrils
O red fruit, Ivory, fine timber!
The loaf's big with it's yeasty rising
Money's new minted in this fat purse.
I'm a means, a stage, a cow in calf.
I've eaten a bag of green apples
Boarded the train there's no getting off.

What am I?

3 men go into a hotel.
The man behind the desk said the room is $30 so each man paid $10 and went to the room.
A while later the man behind the desk realized the room was only $25 so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys' room with $5.
On the way the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man a $1 and kept the other $2 for himself.
This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27 add the $2 that the bellboy kept = $29. Where is the other dollar?

One of the men paid $10 because $25 is not divisble by $3. Either that or each man paid $8.33 plus the $1 they recieved which makes it $9.33 each (approximately).

Upon rethinking... they paid $25 for the rooms, got $3 back each and the bell boy kept $2 so that is the $30. But for equal pay the bellboy kept the $2 making their total $27 so each paid $9 each and then they recieved $3 back. So in conclusion the logic in the second to last section is wrong.

Yes, you have it..............
There is no missing dollar. The men spent $27. Of which $25 went on the room and $2 went to the light fingered bell boy. You can not add the $2 the bellboy has to the $27 the men spent as this $2 actually comes out of the $27 the men spent, the other $25 going on the room.
